No I don't like to go around bragging about my failures but I'm just keeping it real here folks. Sometimes an idea in my head is much better off left in my head. Case in point, this lovely sweater project. The great idea I had was to make an applique like a rag rug. A rag rug is simply pieces of cloth knotted through some kind of grid base to create a relief effect.
Initially I thought about knotting the strips of fabric directly through the knit of a sweater but I was worried I might ruin the sweater by stretching it out so I decided to make an applique and then stitch it on afterwards.
The theory sounds great right? The reality of the finished product isn't as great. I have succeeded in making myself look larger and possibly like walking piece of carpet.
The applique is very heavy and weighs down the sweater. Also it puffs out… lots right over my boobs. Overall it just seems awkward which is too bad because I like the look of it. It is very disappointing when a DIY doesn't turn out as expected since so much time is wasted on it.
Now I am going to remove the applique from the sweater and possibly put it on a pillow instead. It's a shame, but I know I won't wear this as it is.

It was a good idea in theory! I actually like the new idea of putting it on a pillow because I like textured pillows quite a bit. 😉

I don’t think you look like a walking carpet, but that made me LOL. 😀
I think it will look super cute on a pillow!
I made my own heart shirt today too. Must be something in the air. 😉

I guess I like more simple looks. I really would have liked it just with the sweater and not the heart. It’s always fun to try new diy projects even if the final result isn’t exactly what we had in mind.

The sweater looks so cute!! I don’t think it’s a failure at all. Perfect for Valentine’s Day. 🙂 I must say though, the applique would look cute on a pillow too. 🙂

I agree that sometimes simple is best but I’m never attracted to that it seems.

i don’t think it’s nearly as bad as you think it is. there isn’t much that would make you look like a walking carpet. i love the idea, and think it will be fabulous on a pillow!

Uh, I guess I need to be there in person, because it looks great!! I love that you paired it with my favorite type of jean/the boyfriend and flats.
Well, back to the drawing board! Have fun..

Okay Katherine…it is good to know I am not the only one with DIY fails.
Trish says
Ah the DIY fail! I think you did a good job actually! It would look better as a pillow though. 🙂
I actually love reading posts like this. None of us are perfect, and at least you are trying something new!

Not so sure you should turn this into a pillow! I think it totally looks cute! Def keep it as is! I love it. Maybe to take away some of the sweater pattern you could add a blouse with a collar underneath? I dunno… Just an idea 🙂

I actually really love this idea – and the sweater looks super cute on you, the colors are fab! Although, I understand it would feel different in person, such a shame it didn’t work out. I think your back-up plan is a good one though! I totally admire your creativity!
Thanks so much for linking up with Style Sessions, I really enjoyed this fab outfit and look forward to seeing you again this Tuesday afternoon!
