How To Wear Polkadots And Velvet Together Like Chocolate And Peanut Butter.
I’ve never met a polkadot I didn’t like.
Or velvet for that matter.
Combining the two is like peanut butter and chocolate for me…they just naturally go together because I love both of them equally.
Okay…if push came to shove I’d probably choose chocolate over peanut butter but let’s hope that emergency never arises.
If I were on a dessert desert island I think chocolate, peanut butter and a pug would be my three items I couldn’t live without.
Oh! And maybe bug spray and sunscreen.
I burn like crazy and I’m still itching from the darn sandfly bites I got in Cuba a month ago!
This dress is available now in my Etsy shop.
The dress is lovely but too similar to this polkadot dress I already own. Both of them are brilliant tea dresses.
This dark brown polkadot number has a flirty feminine uneven ruffle hemline, sexy flutter sleeves and flattering layers of sheer fabric.
Someone it going to enjoy this vintage piece!
What about you? What are the three things you would take to a desert island?
PS…there are no wrong answers.

Pretty dress. I have one a bit similar to it in my closet but unfortunately it’s a bit too small for me to wear. My three top items (besides practical necessities) would be popcorn, jelly beans, and a comfortable beach chair. Now you know the dress is too small (LOL)
Sherry says
You’ve nailed the Miss Fisher style with this dress and velvet together! And now I’m craving chocolate with peanut butter polkadots….
Hmm…Three things on a deserted island. Can I choose which island? Like, can it be that cakes and ice cream island Melanie wrote about on her blog recently? Because, if that’s possible, it changes what my top three things would be.
If it’s a regular island with sand and palm trees, then this is my top three: Coffee, donuts, and something to zip up into at night to keep out the creepy crawlies. (See? I can be practical sometimes.) Clearly, I’m going to let myself go if I ever get stranded on a deserted island. And soon after that, I’ll get scurvy because I didn’t list anything with vitamin C in it. Maybe the island will have citrus….

Melanie says
Sorry, Sherry. I ate that island. (belch)
Sherry says
Darnit! I was looking forward to swimming in cake and ice cream until all that sugar made my pancreas explode. Coffee and donuts it is, then.
suzanne carillo says
Ha! Yes I love Melanie’s dessert background. It’s her version of the Chocolate Factory.
When you come and visit next Sherry I will take you to one of our famous donut shops. Mmmmm d-uh-oh-nuts!
We all have our weaknesses don’t we?

What are the chances? we’re both wearing vintage velvet and inspired by TV shows! Love that coat and both polka dot dresses look stunning on you.
Ouch to the sand fly bites, they’re horrid things.
Rum, an e-reader loaded with about a million books and a hair band – I’ll happily go naked but can’t be doing with having my hair down when it’s hot! xxx
suzanne carillo says
A hair band is important when you have long tresses… I agree!
Veronica Cooke says
I’d have to have an e reader too – I’d go mad without something to read – moisturiser and sunglasses because the sun hurts my eyes,
I love your Miss Fisher ensemble; I’ve only watched one episode so far but need to catch up with the rest…
suzanne carillo says
I binge watched Miss Fisher. For the past couple of months I’ve been watching Mad Men again from the start. I love it just as much as the first time around and I’m finding it makes it even easier to help me date my vintage pieces. So much of what I thought was 1970s was actually mid or late 1960s.

Chocolate and peanut butter. Yum. Reminds me it is time for me to take my afternoon tea and chocolate break. I love the asymmetrical hem on that dress and the flutter sleeves. Of course, one can never go wrong with polka dots. And I have been coveting the velvet duster since I saw it in a previous post worn with a maxi. It obviously looks fab with anything 🙂

It’s weird because I wasn’t sure it would go with anything! Ha! I like a challenge ; )
Elle says
Love the dotted dress, the color is pretty, a lot like Pretty Woman. Love the tiers. That crushed velvet duster is ah-mazing! Love it! and the scarf add the third perfect layer that adds interest and warmth.
Dessert island. hmmm. Champagne, peanut butter fudge and my iPad to listen to Audible books! That was easy!

If I could still drink alcohol I’d probably have chosen champagne as well. Now I’ve developed an allergy to it. Insert very unhappy face here.
BTW….you are right! This dress looks like the one from Pretty Woman! Good eye!
Elle says
re: champagne- Now that is sad news indeed! 🙁

velvet and polka dots!, that’s a lovely combo!, doubled fabulousness! I love your long orange coat, it’s such a stunning piece!. Velvet rules!
I’m not able to pick only three things to keep me alive and sane in a desert island. A bathroom, sunglasses and a big hat. A big amount of books and internet. Friends and chocolate!. A plane to run away!!
besos
suzanne carillo says
Ha ha! Love the idea of a plane to run away!

I’m polka dot lover myself, and I love a bit of velvet too. Now why didn’t I ever think of putting the two together. That desert island question isn’t easy. I’d take an e-reader on which I’ve downloaded as many books as possible, a writing pad, and my camera. I’d wear my favourite outfit and a hat and a bag which is big enough for some essentials. I guess that’s more than three things then. Ha! xxx
suzanne carillo says
Oooh…I forgot at hat. That is a good idea.
Shybiker says
I love looking at you wearing clothes. You have such natural style and panache. You’re kind of a role model for me. Maybe some day we can go to a dessert island and eat cake!
suzanne carillo says
Ha! Yes but I’d be the only one eating cake as you don’t like sweets which would mean that I’d get fat and you’d stay slim. It’s a trap!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Dessert Island! I LOVE that!
And yep…you had me at polka dots…velvet is an only sometimes fabric for me!
Rachel G says
I am also a big fan of polka dots. Less so of velvet, but that probably has to do with spending so much of my life in a tropical climate…ahaha!

It’s funny when you buy something and already have something like it in your closet!! That just means it’s something you really like!!
My 3 items would be my husband, my toothbrush & wine!!!

Both dresses look so delicious on you Suzanne. I’ve concluded that a curvy figure looks best in the fashions of the 50’s and early 60’s. You’ve got the look my dear girl!!

Hi, dear Suzanne, I remember once I told I liked to watch Miss Fischer and you said you too, and I felt so glad – if I am not mistaken, you mentioned her earrings… I love Miss Fisher’s style! I also loved your polka dot dresses, and the coat – and also, although I love polka dots and velvet, the shoes really drew my attention, I love them! The island wishes are cool – chocolate and the pug are great, but the peanut butter, as much as I looove peanut, I am allergic 🙁 But one spoon I can have 🙂 You look very feminine and beautiful as usual! Guess what,I surrend – next week I’ll book long holidays! Hope you are fine, bisous!

The velvet coat looks fabulous over the polka dot dress – love the way you’ve added the scarf too. Phryne would love it too. xx

I think I’d rather get stuck on that dessert island you talked about. It sounds delicious! 😉
You make wearing all those layers look so effortless. I love the different patterns and textures all mixed up together. It’s very visually appealing!

I love Miss Fisher’s style and you have done a very nice outfit inspired by her. I love velvet too! On a desert island, I would bring . . . a boat. Haha! 🙂

The dress is cute, but the red polkadot dress is fabulous! How would that one look like with a velvet coat?
Maybe I should try polkadots for change. My stripe addiction is out of control (bought 3 new tops recently, all stripes…).
A desert island? Hmm… A boat? A dessert island would be better… That would probably already have chocolate, so I’d just need some wine.
Melanie says
Suzanne, you. are. dazzling in this! I kid you not. There is such a rightness to this mix. Miss Fisher all the way.
A dessert island? Hahaha! Can I say I’d like a solar-powered mansion with a helipad and Amazon drone delivery? Heh. Otherwise, I would hope O can come with me. He might be able to build a shopping mall out of a toothpick (which is could also make, heh). I heard that toothpick line in a movie once. I ate up that ice cream and cake island, sorry!
Shelley@ForestCityFashionista says
I loved Miss Fisher’s wardrobe of wide leg swishy pants and drapey longer jackets. That crushed velvet coat would look good over so many things!
I would need sunscreen, because I burn like crazy, and lots of books, and a magic picnic basket that was always full of food
