So here is a round up for my top ten 10 basic items you need to start a great wardrobe.
Now we get to one of my favourites…dresses! I love em’…and yes I have one closet dedicated to my obsession : ) Finding one dress that works as that quintessential basic wardrobe foundation piece can be challenging. For me, it is the sheath. Not too bulky, not too fussy, just plain, figure flattering and classic. If you get the right one it will be with you forever.
What Colour Should I Buy?
Normally a neutral colour will go with everything but also consider what other colours you have in your wardrobe. Sometimes it is nice to “pop” a colour if the rest of your wardrobe is mostly neutral.
Which Dress Cut Is Best For Me?
If you are full figured go for one that isn’t as tight and that has more of an A-line bottom or slightly flared bottom. This will help balance the body. The more structured the dress, the better it will help shape your body so make sure it is well lined with darts in all the right places.
If you are thin all over you can add some curves to your upper half by layering a sweater or jacket on top. A gorgeous scarf will also add some volume to your upper half.
If you have an hourglass shape (or large chest) make sure that the waist of the dress is well defined. Often fitted sheaths have design details that will define the waist such as draping, darts or seams. Lacking all those design details however, you can also simply add a belt. This will define and direct the eyes to the smallest part of your body, just below your breasts.
Be aware of the collar. A V-neck, scoop or rounded neckline will be more practical for layering and will help elongate the body
What fabric should I buy?
Cotton is great for warmer weather but will wrinkle quickly and will need ironing. A mix of cotton with some lycra in it is more comfortable and will wrinkle less. For travelling a dress with more synthetic fabric is less likely to need ironing but will be warmer.
Satins will show bulges and bumps more than flat matte colour. Tight tweeds and small prints can camoflauge bumps.
These dresses are made for layering and accessorizing. They are like a blank canvas begging for paint. Go wild, go crazy, changing up your dress with jewelry, layering and shoes. This dress can be the chameleon of your wardrobe.
