Do you like menswear as much as I do?
A female actress that really rocks menswear would be this fabulous lady…
There is also this smashing woman that does a great job of sporting menswear…
Or this lovely lady…
All of them are over 40 BTW…
Just sayin’.
It might be strange coming from me, because you know I love my dresses…but nothing makes me feel more badass than when I’m wearing a menswear inspired outfit.
I feel like all I’m missing is a holster in the shot below.
Chambray shirt – TJ Maxx (similar), Jeans – thrifted (sim) Boots – Miss Moos (really nice wedge booties!), Vest – TJ Maxx (sim), Tie – Le Chateau (sim), Hat – Gift (sim), Leather jacket – Danier (sim this one in blue is GAWgeous!)
Go ahead! Make my day punk!
I enjoy menswear inspired outfits because
they make me feel powerful.
Eeek.
I know.
But they do.
What does that say about society? What does that say about me?
I don’t want to think about it too much.
They’re just clothes after all.
Over analyzing details in life can rob you of simple joys.
When I see a women dressed head to toe in menswear I personally identify her as confident, creative and daring. I’d love to be considered any one of those adjectives.
What do you think of when you see a women dressed in menswear inspired clothing?
Could you see yourself wearing any of the outfits I put together below?
Note that you could switch out any of the jeans with a pencil skirt or any of the shoes for a colourful pump if you wanted to “fem” up the look at bit.
In the same sense you could switch out the button up shirts for a silk blouse (even a tie blouse) and each of these looks would still be great. I switched out the t-shirt for the blouse and some heels here.
I’ve got this whole look hanging in my closet right now…must give it a try.
Here are three more of my masculine styled outfits…
Wearing polkadots with a fedora and vest…it works!
Rocking another tie and faux leather pants.
And one last look… I think this is my favourite with the gingham and red tie.
Are you attracted to menswear inspired outfits? Have you ever worn a men’s tie?
My husband owns quite a few great bow ties and I’ve love to put together an outfit with one of them for fun, just to see if I can pull it off. I like a challenge : )

Well, you look awesome and most definitely bad ass, but this is really not for me… I’m so small and have too many lady lumps… That whole androgynous thing was another one – quite hard to do with a proportionately chesty chest! I find it difficult even finding a shirt that fits…

I could really see you doing a vest (gilet or waistcoat) very well. They tend to “lock and load” the chesticles well. So there are no wardrobe malfunctions and they allow people to see you have a small waist. Joan from MadMen does them too.

Ahhh, three of my style and growing-older icons: Diane, Annie and Tilda. And you – looking like a boss in menswear. I like to wear it too, esp. a well-fitted vest or voluminous pinstripe trousers. xox

Yes, they certainly do convey a sense of power. As someone who goes back-and-forth between masculine and feminine clothing on a daily basis, I can attest to this. Your clothes give off a vibe which others observe and relate to in their interaction with you. Dressed masculine, people move out of my way and accord me respect. Even cis-women who dress that way get the same reaction. Smart, interesting post, buddy.

I think this looks great on you! I like a menswear look on women too, and yes, it can make you feel pretty powerful. I think sometimes it confuses other people though – once when dressed in homage to Katharine Hepburn some young men in a bar automatically made assumptions over my sexuality. Isn’t that interesting? Things to ponder anyway. x

I love these outfits! I’m jealous of how good you look in low-waisted jeans. As a 6-foot-tall woman with straight hips, I feel much more comfortable in menswear-inspired clothes. Thanks for reminding me that they can hug our curves!

You know I LOVE menswear inspired looks and so am bound to love the one you got on. It is fun, I think, to play with all the different elements, especially a vest. I’ve only worn the tie once, but would love to get a thin tie and wear one more often.

You look super badass and super sexy! I love menswear on women. I wish I pulled it off better. My shape is so boyish that it kind of comes off looking silly on me. Like a little kid dressing up in his dad’s clothes! Definitely not sexy badass, like you!

Don’t you look ace? You know I’ve got a fetish for a waistcoat!
I dressed in skinny trousers, pussy bow blouses and waistcoats when I was managing a chiropractic clinic a few years ago. I felt all bossy and fabulous and in charge. I love that look. xxx
Curtise says
I love the look on you, it’s powerful, yes, and sexy too. On me, I don’t think it works well, I feel my shape is too curvy to pull off androgynous sharp lines, though I really like the whole vibe on other people. xxx

I am copying that first outfit Suzanne – I love it!! I have a vest that I never wear because I can’t figure out how to make it look feminine. These are all awesome examples.

I’m a huge fan of Diane Keaton’s style. She’s remained authentic to it over the years. This is a very powerful look. You do it beautifully!!
Love the outfits you picked!!
I have to be very careful with this look. With very broad shoulders, large feet, flat chest and no butt, I can look TOO tough. i have to tone it way down. If I could wear heels I could rock it much easier.
Terrific post doll!!

I have all the pieces to try that first outfit already hanging in my closet. Might try them together, although I don’t think I can pull it off as well as you. Swooning over the Annie Lennox pictures – I saw her in concert at a very intimate venue years ago and she was absolutely amazing!

I used to wear a lot of menswear-inspired outfits in my 20’s that included men’s suit jackets and occasionally even a tie, but my body suited the style much more at that time than it does now. It’s annoying, and unfair that most men’s clothes are made much better than women’s, and it often cost less to get them cleaned, or altered. I find a lot of men’s shoes to be really cool (and well-made) and have a few pairs in my closet.
You do look like you should have a shoulder holster with a small, pearl-handled revolver in it!

You do menswear with so much style! I used to wear men’s suits to work and you’ve inspired me to give this look another try. Thank you for sharing your beauty and your hat with Hat Attack!

That is some serious smokin’ hot badassness you’ve got going on there my friend! You are rockin’ it and I love how the curly hair plays to the feminine side. Gorgeous. And is Diane Keaton not the undisputed goddess of aging well?!

YES! A big fat yes! I love menswear and probably for the exact reason you do, I feel so overly confident when I’m wearing it. I think one of my favorite items is the mens ties. I find myself grabbing one of my hubbies instead of a fancy necklace quite often.
Love your look today and you do have that “badass” attitude going on.
Thanks for the wonderful outfit ideas you put together, I’m definitely going to borrow a few of those, most likely today in fact.

I like it very much and especially on you or any lady with an hourglass shape. Today I was styling boyfriend jeans with a jacket and I was really having problems with it. It became too manly for me. Probably because I don’t have a very feminine shape being an inverted triangle (with lumps).
In the end I think I got it right, but especially when you are wearing sneakers with it, it is hard. Was that my mistake? I do wear a tie, but very seldom.
I like what you are wearing today. Your long curly (ahum) hair makes the masculin look very feminine.

PS also loved the outfit with the gingham shirt and the red pumps.

That look looks fab on you, Suz! Very cool indeed.
I used to wear my share of men’s wear styles when I was younger. Still like it, but the hubbie is not a fan. I had at least a dozen of these sleeveless vests, ties, blouses and hats.
