This skirt is too short. I’m wearing it with tights and thigh high boots.
I took this skirt to the consignment store but they weren’t able to sell it and now it is back home.
I keep trying to convince myself to donate it but it is a very high quality, well made piece.
It frustrates me when I take brilliant pieces into the consignment store and they don’t sell. Don’t people recognize quality anymore?
I will freely admit, I have a hard time giving up any Anthropologie or higher end pieces.
I keep toying with the idea of taking down the hem to make it a bit longer but it seems quite complicated (ribbon hem edge) and I’m worried that the fabric will show where the hem was previously.
Instead my solution was to wear it with very opaque tights and thigh highs which is basically the same as wearing it with super skinny pants…right?
Ha!
Let me live in my delusion.
Do you ever have this problem?
When you wear a skirt or dress with OTK or thigh high boots and the boots keep slipping down, resulting in “ancient elephant knee”? I already have wrinkled knees when I’m not wearing boots so when I’m wearing OTK or thigh high boots I expect my legs to look like ballet dancer legs, flawless. This wrinkled suede look was no bueno.
I came up with a DIY solution how to keep thigh high boots from falling down when wearing a dress or skirt (that isn’t as short as the one above).
If I had room I would have added ” WHILE YOU’RE WEARING A DRESS OR SKIRT” to the title.
DIY: Keep Thigh High Boots From Falling Down
You need 4″ x 2 of ribbon that matches your boots, some scissors, a sewing machine and an old fashioned garter belt similar to this one used to hold up stockings.
This method will work well for faux suede boots like mine or thin leather boots.
I sewed a small loop with the ribbon into the top of each boot at the front and the back.
If you’re stitching on leather make sure you have a strong enough needle in your sewing machine.
Clip the ribbons to the garter belt just like you would stockings to keep them from falling.
The solution worked well but the double looped ribbons were a bit too thick for my garter belt. I’ve cut the loops now and only clip a single ribbon to the garter at the front and back.
When I’m not using the garter I just tuck the ribbons inside the boots.
Love the product collages, but it looks like the ShopStyle widget is back to replicating itself several times. It’s done that to me quite a few times as well. You know I love a whimsical belt with a fun skirt, and this bejeweled belt of yours is one of my favorites. I haven’t tried any thigh-high boots yet simply because I don’t have any skirts short enough to wear with them! lol

Thanks for the tip on the silly ShopStyle widget. I need to go back to just creating Polyvore sets again I think.
I don’t think the skirt or dress needs to be that short. I wear mine with longer dresses too because they keep my legs warm. Mind you, you’re not suffering with below zero temps out your way : )
I really like your skirt. Maybe it was passed by because of its length? The color is beautiful and vibrant.
Monica.
I did think that might be the reason it was overlooked. The same reason I’d taken it to the consignment store in the first place.
You have fantastic gams and this looks great on you. But if you’re still feeling skittish, you could wear an open maxi coat on top for coverage and offer flashes of leg every step or so. That’s disappointing, though, that your skirt didn’t sell. What’s up with that?
And your DIY is perfect, but why didn’t you mention my suggestion to put Krazy Glue on your leg and the boot so your boots won’t fall down for days?
Whahaha
I thought Greetje might try it! Ha ha! ; P
For OTK boots I have just bought leather, so there isn’t the issue. I like the idea you came up with and you are quite crafty where I am not. I love that purple mini on you. Great quality and color, keep . I try to sell at times on Poshmark and get lowball offers. Must be fate that you keep it?

I have OTK boots in leather but they still fall down. Yours don’t?
I also tried to sell some items on a site similar to Poshmark based in Canada and found that people wanted the items for nothing. I usually am able to sell quite a bit through one consignment store. I think finding a good one that has clients that like your style of clothing is important when trying to sell via consignment.
Yes, good idea! I have had luck buying on Poshmark but selling is lousy. People do want u to give it away.
I should say I’ve bought one pair of suede ones that can be tricky staying up, I found your idea smart, I’m not crafty at all.
The OTK that are stiffer leather don’t fall down. Consignment is what I’d consider, thx
Jess
I really like the skirt with the OTK boots! So maybe it’s actually a good thing it didn’t sell… 🙂
I don’t own any OTK boots; I owned a pair about 25 years ago, and I remember them sliding down. That’s one of the reasons I haven’t even looked into getting some… Your solution sounds good though.
It’ll work as long as your skirt is long enough to cover the garter belt. Otherwise it starts to look a bit like something Madonna would wear ; P
Great skirt. Too bad it’s your size or I’d buy it off you.
You raise a problem that I discovered happens frequently — the laws of physics causing women’s clothing to move out-of-place. This situation happens with all types of items and makes me respect women for their constant vigilance to keep clothing in place. Men never have this problem. Sharing solutions is sisterly and sweet.
I didn’t think about double sided fabric tape, which is of course good to avoid other wardrobe malfunctions.
I have seen some men need help keeping their trousers up to avoid the butt crack smile. Ha! Just sayin’ ; )
Bwahaha!!
That’s a good idea! I’ve never had boots that tall, though. I was looking for knee-high boots in the past one year for Christmas and every pair I tried on just made me feel like a kid wearing boots much too big for them–I think the width at the knee just felt awkward. I ended up with mid-calf boots instead and they seemed much more flattering. With too-short skirts I typically go the leggings or super-skinny jeans underneath route.
I used to own a pair of OTK boots that made me feel like a pirate. But not in a good way. I got rid of them years ago.
I don’t get it. This trick doesn’t work when you are wearing that short skirt now does it? It will show the ribbons. And wearing a garteer belt was never that much fun. But I do appreciate your solution. Actually I love solutions like that. Remember my cut-off socks?
I like your outfit and best when you leave the jacket open. Don’t ask me why.
Greetje
No, you are right. I mentioned in my post that the skirt needs to be longer than this one. Otherwise it is a tad risqué.
I’m wearing the garter in the outfit with the red dress.
I kind of enjoy wearing a garter belt. Then again, I’ve never worn one for reasons other than fun (wink wink) , so that might have something to do with it.
??? I get it.
That’s a pretty genius idea my friend. I’m with you on donating better quality items. Especially with my daughters things. She’s growing so fast that a lot of it doesn’t get much wear and it’s like new. I know it sounds snarky, but the thought of just donating the stuff and it going to someone who doesn’t love and take care of it makes me crazy. My solution was a have a friend at work with a daughter a few years younger than mine. I give the clothes to her and she absolutely loves them! That way I know they are enjoyed, loved and have a happy home.

I used to give my items to my sister. It wasn’t a bad idea since if I lost weight and wanted them back I was able to get them back, ha!
Now though it is just too expensive to ship them across the country.
It is nice knowing that your clothes are going to someone that appreciates them. I’m sure the other little girl is darn pleased.
I would keep the skirt and get a seamstress to cut the bottom off and insert a band of black fabric.
That is a good idea.
I have added fabric bands at the bottom of other skirts of mine, I just didn’t consider this one. I might give it a go.
🙂 This is such a cool idea!
The skirt is beautiful! Love the color, the style and the fabric.
Have a very HAPPY weekend .-)
I love this look! That skirt really is pretty, and I can see why you like it. I’ve held off on purchasing any over-the-knee boots because a) the falling-down problem and b) because most workdays I’m sitting at a desk for the better part of 8-9 hours and fear they would not be comfortable.
I have some leather ones and they aren’t super comfy when sitting down. These suede ones are like wearing socks, so no problem. I do worry that after a while they might stretch out at the knees though.
Good solution for the (too) short skirt; looking fab! Also good solution for the boots!
Suzanne what a timely post this one is for me! But before I ramble on about my stuff I have to say, please, please don’t give this skirt away! It’s divine and you look heavenly in it. The tights and OTK boots combo offer the perfect solution and you really wouldn’t even consider the length as an issue if you hadn’t brought it up. Wear it, love it and remember that you will never be this young again so rejoice that you can wear this now without any need for apology or blushes.
Yes, as you know I’m trying on OTK boots this evening, one pair chocolate brown faux suede similar to yours and the other tan real suede with a lovely stack heel. Will let you know how this goes. And finally you may be happy that my spending has dwarfed yours, but I must admit that I failed to mention that thanks to you I visited Anthropologie online site after your reference and bang, I’ve made my first purchase (in the sale, at least). I bought a beautiful striped skirt which will be coming a cruisin’ with me. Love it and you, thanks x

I need to put up a poster in my office reminding myself that I will never be this young again : )
Ha ha! Oops. Sorry to have enabled your shopping spree. Just be happy there isn’t an Anthro store within driving distance. They are so nice I like to go there just for inspiration or to hang out. Thankfully the closest location is still 30 minutes from my house.
I hope the skirt works out for you!
I second Anna – keep keep KEEP the skirt, damn it! With that bejewelled belt it looks gorgeous. With thos fabulous legs it looks damn gorgeous!
As to how to keep OTK boots up – no idea! I don’t possess a pair as they would be UTTN boots – that’s Up to the Navel.

Ha! I think they call those waders ; P
Unless there’s a special line of thigh high boots for obese women, I will never be able to experience the sublime inconvenience of having my boots fall. Sad face.
It’s not all it seems.
Not many of us have the opportunity to become a Gypsy Queen. I’d say you have me beat.
have you tried Lane Bryant? I thought that I would never be able to wear OTK boots because of my size but I found an awesome pair on Clearance at Lane Bryant and love them, except for the slippage when I am not wearing pants with them.
I haven’t tried Lane Bryant. Thanks for the suggestion.
You look so chic! We are also belt twins! I love how you paired it with the purple mini. Great look!
I noticed you have the same belt : ) What’s that they say about brilliant minds think alike? ; P
This skirt is a keeper Suzanne! Besides quality, you look great in a mini, a very mod look. Good thing that it didn’t sell.
♥ carmen
What a pretty skirt – and I like how you styled it. I still haven’t found any OTK boots that will work for me.
When I find some that come up to my waist I’m going to send them to you.
I do love your solution, but I have zero sewing skills. Elephant knees are cool on elephants, so why not on me : > Your skirt looks gorgeous and I too am shocked it didn’t sell at consignment. Some of my “best” pieces come back to me too. Loving the look with the blazer and beret – so you, so fabulous. xo

Do you end up keeping your returned pieces then? Or do you take them to the thrift store?
Usually I kiss them goodbye and take them to the thrift – I figure there was a reason I wanted to move it along. If it’s a super-great piece, like your skirt, I’ll find ways to wear it and love it anew (like you did). xo
I finally took my OTK boots out of the box and out for a spin! Thanks for the tip to keep them up. I’m not a lover of purple but that skirt is gorgeous! I can’t believe it didn’t sell. I just started consigning here in Vegas. Hopefully it goes well.
Best of luck with the consignment store! I do find if you go to one that sells items you’d purchase, chances are they will be able to sell your stuff.
Never tried thigh high boots, but that’s really clever!
The purple is so unique, I’m surprised it didn’t sell. But then, we get to see it in this lovely outfit, so… 🙂
