One of my all time favourite shows is Mad Men which will air its final season starting April 2015. I’m going to cry when it is gone.
Where else can you find brilliant writing like this?
Roger Sterling
“I like redheads; their mouths are like a drop of strawberry jam in a glass of milk.”
“The day you sign a client is the day you start losing them.”
Don Draper
“People tell you who they are, but we ignore it because we want them to be who we want them to be.”
“I keep going to a lot of places and ending up somewhere I’ve already been.”
“If you don’t like what’s being said, change the conversation.”
“It wasn’t a lie, it was ineptitude with insufficient cover.”
Mack Johnson
“I’d tell you to go to hell but I never want to see you again.”
And the most amazing clothing like this…
This is my homage to Mad Men style
with me playing the part of Joan the secretary (my idol!)…and yes I know I do not look remotely like her!
Isn’t the scarf wonderful? I got it through my favourite consignment shop. All pieces here are via consignment.
While the boss is away…
Are you a fan of Mad Men or Mad Men style?
Shybiker says
I got hooked on “Mad Men” the first episode, which I saw during its initial broadcast, and have seen every episode since then. I will cry with you when the series ends. Such good drama, such amusing fashion.
I find it fascinating that you connect to Joan. She’s an interesting character. A strong woman during a period that didn’t encourage strength in women. Your outfit is beautiful. It channels Joan’s intense sexual allure while staying within the boundaries of conventional decorum. Achieving that balance is impressive.
carillo suzanne says
I think Joan is the smartest (and sexiest) out of all of them.
Kristian says
A fun outfit, but my favorite part isn’t just seeing the look but getting to know where your inspiration comes from. As usual then, a fun, fun post 🙂
carillo suzanne says
In my dreams I’m living back in the 50’s/60’s, although my Mom says it wasn’t as glamorous as they make it out to be.
acolourfulcanvas says
Ah, the fashion of Mad Men! Been there! Done that! Had a blast! There will be many that will feel the loss of the show.
Okay, I don’t watch the show, but I did do a lot of ‘spot’ watching when I was researching my own make. I think I see a wee bit of Peggy in this outfit too.
I love your typewriter and your phone! Love! Love!
carillo suzanne says
You do remind me of Peggy…but not your personality at all. Peggy is cold and can be downright mean. Not you at all! You have made some wonderful fit and flare dressed which are of course what the show is full of. Well the first few seasons anyhow.
Yes, I loved using the “props” from my husband’s home office. That phone has the LOUDEST ring! LOL
Porcelina says
Hell yes, you’re certainly rocking a Mad Men look here! I love nude fishnets, I forgot how well they work. I’ll buy some more when my 100 day spending ban is over. My favourite caption is from the episode where Megan sings Zou Bisou Bisou at Don’s birthday, and Roger Sterling & Mrs Sterling have this exchange:
Roger: Why can’t you sing like that?
Mrs Sterling: Why can’t you look like him?
Brilliant!

carillo suzanne says
I adored that line of dialogue too! There are so many zingers it is hard to catch them all.
CiCi Marie says
What else could you do with that wonderful office you’ve created than dress up as Joan in it?! Mad Men fashions, from the first few series, are my absolute favourite costumes that have ever been on TV. What I really love is how the makers of the series were determined to only use authentic props etc, so you know it can’t have been that far from the truth. Love your Joan look! Whatta woman!
carillo suzanne says
Yeah she is a whole lotta woman going on there!
Patti says
I have loved watching Joan and Peggy come into their own and feel the power. I’m gonna miss them all (and probably re-watch). You look wondrous – the scarf is indeed fabulous. You are alluring yet covered up – a very 60’s vibe. xox
carillo suzanne says
I’m almost ready to start watching the series from the beginning again. I have yet to see something nearly as well done but Master’s of Sex is also excellent and happens in the 50’s/60’s.
une femme says
Another big Mad Men fan here, and have watched since the beginning. The attention to detail in the costuming always blows me away. You’ve done a fabulous interpretation, love that scarf!
carillo suzanne says
The scarf makes it doesn’t it?
two birds says
I also love Mad Men. Such a great show. I will be sad when it comes to an end. I hope they wrap it up well! I am looking forward to April!
I love your take on Joan’s look. Your scarf is really beautiful.
carillo suzanne says
Me too. I hope it isn’t another Dexter! : ( Talk about a hugely disappointing ending.
Mrs C says
Wow, I could almost see Sue from A Colorful canvas in the line up, LOL! Here, you too could pass as one of the cast from the show.. the glasses are spot on! I don’t actually follow Mad Men.. more of a Games of Throne girl. I know, horribly hard to emulate the style from that show 😉
carillo suzanne says
Yeah Sue would fit right in wouldn’t she?
Game of Thrones is a totally different animal but I follow it as well. I’d love to see you dressed as Daenerys Targaryen with a couple of dragons on leashes! LOL
Tiina L says
Oh I love Mad Men… the show, the clothes, the sassy attitude! I think I’ve seen every episode at least half a dozen times. And your homage to it is so beautiful, but very modern at the same time.
carillo suzanne says
You’d do well in a Trivia game of Mad Men then : )
Rosy says
Ahhh, Mad Men is the best TV show ever !!! Love absolutely everything about it, costumes, dialogues, characters … it’s almost, almost as bright as your outfit today … although I prefer yours one, honestly.
Sylvia @ 40PlusStyle says
I actually think you look better than Joan! Great photoshoot!
I got into mad men really late and only saw the last season. One day I will sit down and watch all the earlier episodes but I’m looking forward to seeing the final season.
carillo suzanne says
I have to admit that last season wasn’t as good as previous seasons. The first few seasons I think were their best. I want to rematch them all.
Shelley@ForestCityFashionista says
I was a huge fan of Mad Men until they started taking such long breaks between seasons, and splitting seasons into two parts just to drag it out even longer. I found I was forgetting where we left off and the story was losing its momentum for me. That said, I still watch it because it’s better than 90% of everything else on television. The writing has been what’s kept me watching. I loved the 60’s clothing, not so much the 70’s with all the guys and their facial hair.
You’ve done an excellent tribute to Joan – love the legs on the desk shot. Nude fishnets do great things for women’s legs and you’ve got fabulous gams!
carillo suzanne says
I agree! It is a HUGE pain in the ass. They seem to do that with so many series now. Basically you need to keep watching the previous season just to know what the heck transpired last year.
If you get a chance check out Fargo…they redid it as a series and it was brilliant.
Curtise says
I think I must be the only person in the world who hasn’t seen Mad Men… And I’ve got a box set of the first series sitting on the shelf! Don’t really know why I never get round to watching it, I’m sure I’d like it. But yes, the clothes (that I’ve seen) are fantastic, as is your homage to Joan. A great modern-day version, and that scarf is a real beauty! xxx
carillo suzanne says
That series was made for you! LOL Once you start watching you will be hooked.
Martina Elegant says
I love Mad Men! Perfect outfit and with your hair up you would resemble even more to her.
Paperesse says
Hihihihihihihi…oh, you cracked me up with this one. Love your outfit, you definitely had the Mad Men look going there. And yes, I am a big fan of Mad Men as well. It’s up there as one of my favorites of all time.
Happiness at Mid Life says
I don’t watch Mad Men but I do the costumes and the clothing of the era. I love the feminine cut of the clothes while being demure at the same time. You and your outfit fit right into the show. I love it all from head to toe but my favorite is the shoes.

I have never seen Mad Men. I think this has more to do with my husband’s crush on Christina Hendricks and my jealousy than the show itself. I would feel the same way about Downton Abbey. I could watch that show for 24 hours and keep going. Last night they showed so many gorgeous outfits in peach and orange tones paired with shades of blue. It was gorgeous. And then I come here and you are wearing blue and orange! I must try this ASAP. I love it! You look hot!

No, Curtise, it appears you are not alone; I have never seen Mad Men either, not one episode, although I know a man who purports to have been a high-flying advertising exec in New York around the time, which is also not really an incentive to watch. But I have seen the show’s styles everywhere, which I do love, and your interpretation of it is fantastic, from your clothes to your “set.” I love world maps and manual typewriters.
No Fear of Fashion says
Gosh, your new office really does help to play the part, doesn’t it. Love the typewriter. And your outfit of course. It is a bit …. uh… secretary-like. Haha, yep that was the look you were going for.
As soon as the last series of Mad Men is out on DVD, we will buy them, although I think we already missed one as I don’t know Mack Johnson.
We were hooked on this series. The time where somebody’s foot was totally ruined with that grass mower in the office got me gobsmacked.

I am a terrible TV series offender, I watched some and then it seems I was about 3 seasons behind – I do think it’s an iconic series though, everyone has heard of it and knows about the attire (which is magnificent) Joan is a sexy gal isn’t she? you have nailed the look, the demure bow and the sexy fishnets are a fabulous combination x x x
Ashley says
I love Mad Men! I pretty much want to devour Jon Hamm, because he is delicious. (Even though Don Draper is a huge douche.) Joan is my style idol. She’s got curves and some junk in her trunk and she looks AMAZING.
I love your take on this. You do vintage so well.
Lana says
Why am I not watching Mad Men? I mean, it looks worth it for the clothes alone, plus there’s Jon Hamm. You look gorgeous in this inspired outfit – you were made for this!
MIS PAPELICOS says
You are more beautiful and exciting than MAD MEN, my dear Suzanne.
Sooooooooooooooo clever, my friend
Thank you sooooooooooooooo much for sharing your art.
Besossssssssssssss
Ps: I am counting on your candle on Thursday
Anna says
You’re probably not going to believe me, but I’ll say it anyway: your outfit is a lot better than the ones I saw in those photos up there. I don’t know if the prints just didn’t sit well with me or what, but I wasn’t really too excited about anything the ladies were wearing, but then when I saw your vibrant color block style, it just really stood out. The scarf is absolutely perfect!

You’d fit right in and I’m sure Don would fall hard for ya. But let’s not tell Robert that, shall we?!
