Have you started watching True Detective?
With Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson?
If not…what are you waiting for?
This is without a doubt the best new series out there.
Both Matthew and Woody (I think I can refer to them just by their first names 'cause we're tight like that) are brilliant.
Matthew is exceptional. I didn't think this guy could really act until I saw Dallas Buyers Club and this series. Now I think he is unstoppable. His role is a million miles away from the typical stoner boyfriend roles from his RomCom days.
I am addicted to this series. I would have to say this is as good as Breaking Bad and MadMen for me. Those are my favourites of all time, so you know this is pretty special.
Philisophical, character driven intense drama with very dark undertones is how I would describe it.
Here is an example of the profound dialogue you can expect throughout the show,
“I can see your soul at the edges of your eyes. It’s corrosive. Like acid,” he growls. “And I don’t like your face. It makes me want to do things to it…There’s a shadow on you, son.”
One of my favourite bits about the series is the attention to detail starting with the opening sequence which is simply an exquisite piece of artwork all on its own.
Skillful and haunting images with music to match. Just see if this doesn't get the hairs on the back of your neck standing up just a bit…
Do you watch this series?
Do you love it as much as me?

I will mention it to Mr. D – He watches those type of series
I wonder if it’s on Netflix?
Tks and have a great weekend

The mister and I ditched our cable service a couple of month ago, as we felt we just didn’t watch enough TV anymore to justify it’s $70 expense and could better allocate those funds elsewhere in our budget, so I’ll be waiting for Netflix to (hopefully!) carry it. Looks stellar and I do hope to catch it at some point!
Have an awesome Friday!

*PS* Thank you very much for your great comment on yesterday’s post. There’s no truly right or wrong post frequency, but in my experience, every other day (or even a bit less frequently, as the case may be) draws in significantly more reader interest in my posts usually. It does fly in the face of what we’re often told as bloggers, but perhaps it’s just a secret “trick” that few have hit on yet.

A couple of my work colleagues are watching this and love it, and one of them gave me the first five episodes on a USB key to watch so I am very excited. I feel the same way about Matthew – he has suddenly become a good, possibly great actor (Killer Joe, Mud, Dallas Buyer’s Club). Breaking Bad and Madmen have been favourites of mine, but I’m also quite devoted to The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.

Bizarre co-incidence! this was recommended to me on Tuesday, 2 colleagues raved about how awesome it is and seeing as I always seem to catch the last episode of something good at least I have the heads up this time! x x x I also want to be tight with Matthew and Woody too! x x x

I am crazy for this show – I think it compares favorably to the first seasons of Mad Men, too. And I agree about MM – he has impressed the hell out of me with this role! (Still need to see Dallas Buyer’s Club). xox

Suzanne, I read your comment on another site where you said you had days where you felt like throwing in the towel on blogging. Please, please don’t. I’m more of a stalker than a commenter, but when I look at my list of new posts, yours is always the one I read first. Yours is the most distinctly individual of any. You have such a variety of fun and thought provoking topics. And I love your salty, tell-it-like-it-is attitude! Not even to mention your quirky but so right-on style.
So…chin up, forward march…and keep up the good work!

I don’t think it will be on Netflix for a while yet. Usually they come out a year or two after they have been released.

We gave up our cable as well over a year ago. Now I watch it all online.
Thanks for all the great articles you are writing Jessica. I always learn something from them.
Suzanne says
I hadn’t heard of Killer Joe…need to look that up now.
Well I certainly loved/hated last year’s Game of Thrones finale. INSANE!
I was crazy about the first season of Walking Dead and I still watch it, but it’s not as intense as it was initially. Plus I really don’t like gore…so I look away for the really gross stuff, which depending on the episode can be quite a bit! LOL
Suzanne says
Ha ; ) There isn’t much room between us, since I’m so “tight” with them…you might need to find 2 other guys to get tight with. Either that or I will trade you these two for Michael Fassbender and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. That wouldn’t be a problem. Just sayin’.
Suzanne says
I wondered what the heck had happened to MM. It looked like he became anorexic or something. It was all for his role in Dallas Buyer’s Club…which is incredible.
Suzanne says
It is so nice of you to take some time to comment Charlene : )
Really touched me.
When a person blogs you truly have no idea who reads your posts. You just write down what you’re thinking about, trying to be as honest as possible, throw it out into the wide open darkness that is the internet and hope that somewhere, someone grabs onto a bit of it and maybe enjoys it.
It feels great to know that has happened with you.
You made my night.
bisous

Oh yes, we’ve been watching this series since the start. I think both actors are amazing, and everything: the writing, the cinematography, the directing…is SO freaking good. this is one of the best series since Deadwood, IMO. The character arcs are just blowing me away.

I’ve heard about this, and I am so out of the loop on any cable shows. We don’t have cable or satellite and my husband refuses to get Netflix! We can check this out online, but I really don’t need to spend more time looking at screens!

Yes, we watch and we love.
But not being native english speakers, with all the mumbling, grumbling, accents and slang, we miss big chunks of dialogue :-(.
Matt (we are even tighter) is unrecognizable with his unhealthy look and significant weightloss. Both him and Woods (yep, uber-tight too) act as never before!

I LOVE this show. It is so good! Only three more episodes! And then it is over forever! How are we going to survive after that? I have a newfound crush on Mathew McConaughey. I only like intelligent men. He never seemed to fit the bill before, but now him playing this intelligent guy is enough for me. I have no idea how they are going to end it. I had started to write a post about it, but with it only being eight episodes long, I never got to it. I am glad you are more on top of it than me!
Do you think that the daughter with the drawings and Barbie posing will be a bigger clue than they seemed to referrence?

I need to find where I can watch Deadwood. I’ve heard so much about it.
Suzanne says
We bought an Apple mini about a year ago which turns our TV into a computer, so we watch it on the TV. We don’t have cable.
Suzanne says
They do have rather strong accents. You need some subtitles to help.
Suzanne says
Now you have just made me sad : (
Only 3 more episodes? I need to watch them in 15 minute intervals so I can savour them more.
They are pulling a Seinfeld and going out on a high. The writing is fantastic so I am sure the next season will have a strong following even without the brilliant actors.
I’d forgotten all about the daughter. The only thing I really believe is that Mathew didn’t have anything to do with it.

I love Mad Men. Seen everything. This series hasn’t hit Holland yet. I think.
I watched the opening scene and heard the music. The hairs on the back of my neck did not stand up. But I agree it is very nicely made.

PS if there is a lot of fear and/or violence or death in it, it is not for me.

Third time… Now I have copied it.. Haha.
No… I did copy it… But it didn’t do it. I am stopping now.

This is mostly mystery, a who-done-it if you will. Lots of clues and since it is told backwards you discover the bits of history as it unravels.
Probably the hair stands up more once you know a bit more about the story. I’m a sucker for really good opening credit sequences.
