This year I felt I needed a new coat. I wanted something bright. Not the usual, brown, black or grey. You know me, I love me some colour.
I came across this tailored coat by Donna Karan at the Bay Outlet.
It's hard to tell here but the colour is a very rich jewel toned pink/burgundy. Because of the indoor lighting it looks red here but it is more pink.
I think in winter (I'm talking real winter folks…where it dips below freezing, not like those lucky people in California when they say, "oh it is so cold here today I had to layer on an oversized sweater with my short shorts and booties) it is a huge challenge to dress stylishly while still staying warm.
This is 100% wool, lined and with a cashmere sweater underneath I was quite warm. The neckline is open so a large scarf will be necessary for when it dips below 0.
I managed to score this at 80% off, which made it $80 with taxes included. Score!
Also I love how the breast pocket actually opens so I can add a pocket square and change it up.
If I take out the pocket square I think it will lend itself well to some vintage brooches on the collar.
I like that is fits into my fashion sense.
The modern lines and classic tailored shape will make this a closet staple but bold colour is attention grabbing…and really me.
I will let you know I had already purchased this before I scored this vintage coat. Othewise I probably wouldn't have bought it.
Or at least that is what I like to tell myself.
Sometimes I like to tell myself little white lies.
It just makes life easier.
How are you managing to stay warm and stylish this winter?
Or are you one of the lucky ones living somewhere that it only dips down to sweater weather? If so, do you have an extra room you're not using? Me and my pug need a break from the cold. We don't eat much (well I don't at least) and she only snores at night or when she sleeps, (which is all the time).

Nice coat and I think it was a good buy. Great color and you can wear it many ways. It is freezing we now too, I mean really cold as you say. I have many coats to mix it up. The cold gets to the brain by the end of February!

Terrific find – the color is fabulous and I love a simple line like this. Great with your hat!

What an awesome deal! I love the color, and you’re right that it suits you to a T.
I also like that color in outerwear and winter clothes is becoming common. It feels like all I had were grey and black winter clothes, and now that I have Couturgatory, I want to keep some color in my outfits. Can’t let both of my readers down. 😉

It is extremely difficult to stay warm and look good at the same time!! Mostly I choose freezing to death, but if I actually have to shovel or do something that will keep me outdoors for a while, I’m layering my pajamas over regular clothes and piling on the REAL scarves (as opposed to pretty scarves), jacket…sometimes a ski mask because we get bad wind on top of this hill. And I look utterly ridiculous, but at least I don’t freeze to death.
I really like the coat–colorful coats are the best kind!

The coat looks ace with the pink jumper underneath, such pretty colours on you.
I wear the same as I do all year round – vintage maxi dresses (only with thermal leggings underneath and a sheepskin hat and fake fur coat on top – and I try and escape for at least a month to warmer climes! x

I feel ya girl! It’s been in the single digits here and I’m DYING. It’s way too freaking cold and SO hard to still look stylish. You pulled it off with flying color though! This coat is gorgeous! The different pinks look so good with your hair and lip color and I’m loving the hat. I’ve been neglecting my hats this Winter and just pulled one out yesterday for the first time.

Great purchase Suzanne. You know I live in cold oversized sweater weather and you are welcome to come to my home anytime …Of course…you have to help me organize my closet. I went running this past weekend in 40s and I swear I though my toes and fingers were going to freeze off of me.

Great coat! Its hard to find a colorful coat, dont you find? The stores are full of black and grey; ugh just what we need in the winter; more DULL COLORS! Xoxo

This coat is gorgeous in every way – color, shape, drape! The only problem is that you’re making me downright jealous. I thought my new teal coat was all I ever needed, but now I want more coats! Especially since we’re having a deep freeze here, too.
What do we want? More coats!
When do we want ’em? NOW!

After reading your post, I realized that I’ve never thought to style a coat. I style my outfit underneath, and then I toss on the coat as a purely practical afterthought. But your mention of swapping out pocket squares, brooches, and pairing it with different scarves made me realize that a coat can function just like any other piece in my closet. Duh! lol

This is a delightful menswear inspired look. Wish I had an answer to the “staying stylish in the cold” question.

That coat is beautiful…the color, the cut, everything about it. You’re right, it is so you. And I love the pocket square. Now I wish I had a coat with a little pocket for a pocket square…

Excellent purchase Suzanne, so that little white lie is OK by me. I have a feeling this beautiful number will take you many places and fit over many wonderful outfits. Plus, that warm color looks so perfect with your skin tone.

I have an extra room. The Netherlands usually do not get that cold (if it gets minus 10 degrees Celcius everybody complains about freezing to death. Usually it is minus 4 at the worst. Or around 0 or +2 (Celcius). You are welcome.
I love this coat. I have one very similar in purple and paid a fortune for it. (Thanks for the idea of a brooch.) You have done so much better that I have. The other vintage coat is also gorgeous.
And yes ashes to ashes etc. … you get philosophical when you are confronted with so much memorabilia of someone’s life. We don’t have estate sales in The Netherlands. Such a shame.

That’s a great buy, that coat. It looks fab on you. Tell me, is it just me or are you getting prettier with every post you publish?! You look really nice, Suzanne!
Funny how in Singapore some fashionistas sometimes complain about the eternal summer here, as in: we can never wear winter clothes.
I am not one of them, since I hate winter and am also not really a fan of winter clothes. I realize every year again, that I find dressing myself much easier and more fun in summer then in winter. Clothes are lightweight and have happy colors. You feel light yourself since you don’t have to cover up so much. In winter the thick clothes make me look and feel fatter then I am. Colors are often dark and boring. And so on. I’ll take summer clothes all year round, thank you very much!
