Yes, I buy clothes on purpose so it forces me to attend an event where I can wear my new found treasure.
What’s that you say?
Cray-Zay?
Naw.
Just trying to keep things interesting : )
Case in point…this silk vintage beaded dress 1920’s style that I picked up from The Edit in Hamilton. Thank you for holding this for me Jentine!
I wore it New Year’s Eve to a wonderful evening at a very swishy downtown hotel where were treated like royalty, ate like piglets, played like kids with all the proper New Year’s Eve accoutrements…and danced well past the clock striking twelve to the fabulous sounds of the Toronto Big Band.
It was magical.
All because I had to make sure this dress lived the life it was meant to lead.
I’ve even managed to find yet another great party for my dress to attend on Jan 30th! A 1920’s Speakeasy with 4 course dinner, dancing and live jazz.
Wohoo!
I owe it all to the dress.
And a bit to this guy…for being game.
What a brilliant way to ring in 2015!
My dress and I had a smashing time.
What spectacular pieces in your closet are begging to be taken out and worn? Or maybe you are like Vix and have no qualms about wearing a fancy gown to buy groceries. (Seriously…that woman is my hero!)
Me…I like my clothes to push me to socialize and party more. This vintage beaded gown is my personal life coach…urging me out of my house to interact with people in a real life setting, and shake my groove thang outside of the virtual world in which I normally find myself.
Do you have any pieces in your closet that could be your life coach?

Ah it’s every bit as pretty on as I’d hoped it be – such a stunning dress. I love the idea of a dress taking me out for the evening… that’s probably the only kind of life coaching I’d let my clothing do 😉 CC x

The dress is magnificent and perfect match with your coloring. Sounds like a magical evening. I love this idea you put forth of clothes giving you a nudge to go out in the world and do something different. Starting a blog has given me just that incentive but you give me the idea to purposively choose clothes that will put me in places I do not normally go to. Great post and beautiful dress.

I understand. Objects have a life they want to lead and it’s our job to enable that. My Yamaha motorcycle wants to go fast. It yearns to go fast. I’m merely catering to its need when I ride it 120 mph. Haven’t had to explain this theory to a cop yet…

I love this vintage dress with the fur scarf dark tights and shoes-so pretty! I love the full length picture of you and your date-how fun!

Oh lovely! that dress looks so great on you- I almost bought a life coach dress last summer- well- I did buy it- then I returned it- because it was too much- for now- but part of me still wishes I’d just kept it in my closet to spur me on to that fabulous hawaii vacation it was asking for- one with a yacht, and champagne probably- I need a baby step life coach outfit….

Exquisite dress! What a wonderful find, Suzanne! I like your philosophy, and I’m sure the dress was more than thankful to be taken to a fancy dance floor. 🙂 xxx

AWESOME!!! No, REALLY AWESOME! You look gorgeous Suzanne, and I think it’s super cool that you picked this up from Jentine! And I’m sure she’d be thrilled to know that this dress is being socialized in the custom it deserves!

That is a truly magical dress. I want one just like it, even though I know such a thing doesn’t exist. And you definitely wore it for the perfect occasion!

This dress is stunning on you – and what a perfect way to ring in the new year! I am one of those sad old ladies that was in her pajamas by 11:45. We did go to a party and had a blast but wanted our little one home. He was a trooper and stayed up till midnight.
I love the idea of a dress making your push your social boundaries! I think I will need to tell my hubby this that I bought a dress so he can take me out. Somehow, I don’t think he will be too thrilled with this idea.

How wonderful. Clothing as social director. And a Flapper Dress no less. Please tell me you danced the Charleston. I love the fur scarf. You look so pretty. Take that, Zelda Ftzgerald! I need to buy some dancing shoes to get me out onto the dance floor!
Lana says
Hmm…I like this idea of buying a dress that needs to go out – might get me out of the house more! This is so gorgeous on you, I can’t top it though!
Melanie says
I love that you must live up to the expectations of your clothes. And you certainly did! And Richard too! You are a smashing looking couple. I only wish I was there to take photos being careful not to trip over my own two feet, although I think only a professional sports photographer would be able to catch your moves. The scarf looks great with this dress – I never would have thought of this combination. And my, oh my, the jewels, darling…!
Vix says
I bet that cracker of a dress is so glad to have you in her life! You look beautiful. I love your hair up and how you’ve accessorised the dress with grey tights and that furry snood to bring that vintage beauty bang up to date, edgy and cool. Robert was very thoughtful, wearing sequins to compliment yours.
Hero? Trust me, the feeling is mutual!
You are one stunning couple. xxxxx
Kristian says
Wow- what an amazing find and absolutely stunning dress. I do often shy away from such fancy clothes, because there is virtually no opportunity to wear them. I’d never thought of buying them to motivate me to find the opportunity…but it seems to work for you!
Shelley@ForestCityFashionista says
The dress is stunning, and you are gorgeous wearing it! The furry scarf is an inspired addition, and the up-do is perfect. Your New Year’s Eve sounds wonderful – if I was ever going to go out for New Year’s that would be the kind of event I would enjoy. The dress certainly deserves to attend multiple parties.
I have a couple of “fancy dresses” that I’ve worn to Gallery openings, or house parties, but honestly, there are very few events here in London that anyone dresses up for, which is disappointing.

I am in love with this whole style. Love the gorgeous beading, the vintage style and loolk on you. You both look great and I would love to have gone out to hear a big band NYE, my kind of music u know!

Beautiful you wearing a beautiful dress – the perfect combination! That beaded dress really is a stunner, and you’ve styled it perfectly. What a smart couple you and Robert are, I bet you turned some heads on the dance floor!
I don’t go anywhere that requires dressing up, but I do it anyway; my NYE was spent boozing in my friends’ kitchen, but I figured that was no reason not to glam up! xxx
Texas Jak says
How clever! I never really thought of clothes as being life coaches. Hmm, let me see…I’m sure I have several pairs of boots that inspire me to get of my p.j.;s and see the world. Great idea and post. Btw, your NYE dress is lovely.

A knockout dress Suzanne! I love the photo of the two of you, such a dapper couple. Glad you had fun, and well done on finding the suitable social events! My Baby and I have started dressing up at home, just to have dinner or to sit in the living room and have a glass of wine, because we don’t go to enough events to wear our overflowing wardrobes, and we keep buying things! It’s become a regular Friday night thing, and we have a stay-at-home date tonight that I will be dressing up for later. It’s a horrid, wet and windy day, so we don’t want to venture out. x
Liz says
Yes yes yessssss!!! I am so excited about this dress and so excited for you that you got to wear it! Like you, I use clothes as an excuse to go out and do fun things. Party dresses aren’t for dinners at home, folks. Take me out, Kyle! To the swankiest place you can find! I think you worded it perfectly by saying that you want your clothing to live the life it was meant to live. And clearly a 20s big band party was the only way for that to happen. I completely support your delusions as I am living the same ones myself. You both look positively smashing, and that dress is fab-u-lous! We’re taking a cruise next month, and of course I’m already planning what to wear on elegant night. There will be the sad and lame in their khakis and polos. And then there will be me and Kyle. Decked out like we’re on the Titanic. Minus the sinking, hopefully.

Dang it!! you are just fabulous!! the dress is perfection and so gorgeous, it was made for you, you are exquisite and of course your handsome husband looks wonderful too – you are so right about clothes urging us to go out, sometimes they really are motivational and demand a day/evening out x x x

How fun to use it as a life coach! You are giving me ideas. I should really try and find a spectacular dress and then find an event for it!

What a stunning dress, what a stunning woman, what a handsome couple.
And what a splendid way of life you two have. You go to parties and you dance. I couldn’t even get Ron to dance classes. Oh please know and realize how lucky you are.
The dress is soooo pretty. Wel paired with all the other stuff you threw in, like shoes, clutch, faux fur shawl and …. necklace (one of your own?)
Hope you are having a lovely time in NY.

I guess Swinging 20s was a popular theme for NYE party. My sister in the UK got in touch with me to ask for some costume advice (ehem!) for Swinging 20’s NYE party too. Of course she didn’t have a gorgeous dress like yours but we managed to put something together from the backof her closet and with her chain belt around her head, off I sent her, LOL! When I was still working I used to buy clothes hoping to attend some kind of party too but now no more… life as a pilot’s wife is just not as colorful 😉 I’m sure you had tons of compliments for the dress that night 🙂

FANTASTIC dress. Straight out of Great Gatsby or maybe Boardwalk Empire! Your man looks so much like Chris Noth in that full-length photo I did a double take!

What a spectacular dress! You two look ever so festive!
If ever you wear this dress again, try it with your highest possible heels. I think that would even be better, proportion wise.
Some of my clothes can provoke, emphasize or stimulate certain moods or personas, like a boho gypsy, a pastel romantic or a scandinavian princess. I’m afraid that that’s as far as it goes for me;-)
