Wearing Red To Ramp Up Your Visibility
So many of us women over forty worry about losing our visibility and relevance in society as we become older.
Here is a funny clip from the Netflix series Frankie and Grace that demonstrates women’s invisibility as they age.
Wearing red is a way of combating society’s predilection for ignoring women of a certain age.
Red signifies so many things, power, life, death, love.
The colour red is emotionally intense. It increases our heart rate, and raises our blood pressure.
Wearing red increases your visibility.
Red isn’t for wallflowers.
I will admit that as a bottle red-head I stayed away from wearing red for a very long time. I didn’t want the colour competing with my hair. In the past few years I kicked that idea to the curb and embraced the magical bold power of red and the confidence that comes along with it.
Is Red Is Too Much For You?
If red is too overwhelming for you to consider try dipping your toes in, literally with some red footwear. It’s a fantastic way to add an exclamation mark to the end of your style statement.

Another way I wore this Joseph Ribkoff dress.
Here is that DIY I did of this thrifted bomber jacket.
I told you red has magical powers! I can fly!
Wearing More Red
Here are some other ways I’ve worn my red boots, booties and shoes.

I’m searching for another pair of tall red boots that have a lower more manageable heel for myself.

Making A Bold Statement – All Red
How can you ensure all eyes will be on you? Up the quantity of red you’re wearing.
This is probably one of my all time favourite dresses. Talk about making an entrance!
I recently picked up an Asian style cheongsam suit in red and a red gingham maxi skirt from the 1970s I’m itching to show you.
I foresee more red in my future.

You have a got a treasure-trove of photos! All so very good. Your red boots are always awesome, and I like how you dress so they don’t take over the whole outfit. That off-the-shoulder red dress – wow! stunning on you.
Still promise you’ll be my friend, but I saw some over-the-knee red boots with blockish mid-heel on sale at Top Shop – $10 or something outrageous a couple of weeks ago. My size was gone – I tried. I was going to email you but got sidetracked by a huge chocolate chip cookie and my sugar freeze made me forget. (hanging head in shame)

DAMN Melanie!!! What the ****?
I just don’t have you trained well enough yet I guess.
Of course I don’t rate at all when compared to a huge chocolate chip cookie. I don’t blame you. I blame the cookie.

If you can’t get inspiration from these examples then nothing will work!
I too have coloured my hair red , with henna. You can barely see it on my dark hair, but it shines in the sun…and on grays.
It must be so hard having to decide what to keep or is it fun just to play for a while and then sell?

The longer I have my Etsy store the easier it is to let go of things. I really enjoy making other people happy by sharing my love of vintage so I don’t mind passing along lots of my found treasures onto those that appreciate them.
That said, when the *perfect* piece comes my way I still hold onto it, if even just for a while like you suggested.

Red works so well for you, probably because of your panache.

You have whetted my appetite for wearing red, Suzanne! I don’t wear it nearly often enough, although I have all kinds of red items in my wardrobe, including red boots. I keep scrolling through your pictures, as they’re all fabulous. Your all-time favourite dress is a real eye-catcher, and so is that 1970s pussy bow number. I’ve already been digging out lots of red for a future post! xxx

Wow, girl, your reds are stunning, every one of them. They *did* make my heart beat faster. Love, love those sock-boots and of course your off-the-shoulder glam dress. I just started watching Frankie and Grace, the first season. They get crazy on mind-altering tea and dance around the fire – now that’s the life. xox

There are some fabulous outfits here, Suzanne; however could you have thought that because you have red hair you couldn’t wear red? You look gorgeous in red!

It took me awhile to come back to your blog. I haven’t seen Frankie and Grace and the link you provided led to many other links! I had to grab myself by the shirt collar and drag myself back!
Red is just plain thrilling and I LOVE EVERY ONE OF THESE OUTFITS!!!
You really have covered a whole range of red looks from sporty to sexy and you look wonderful in all of them Suzanne.
I have two pairs of red booties and find that red is a very versatile shoe color. You’ve convinced me that I need to visit my red options more often Suzanne.

What a veritable feast for the eyes Suzanne. I love all of these reds on you, especially that stunning off-the-shoulder dress! The sock boots are truly versatile which is what I find too – I’m still finding new outfits that take these boots as their inspiration.
I was recently off-island and found yet another pair of red short boots, but this time cowboy ones, so I can’t wait to showcase these bad boys! Ah, the joy of red… It’s taken me many years to warm to this colour, but I’m making up for lost time now.

Red suits you very well and doesn’t overshadow your hair at all 🙂 I love the combination!

Red is such a powerful colour, I am surprised I have so little of it in my closet. After reading this post, I want to go out and buy something red now (it won’t be red boots with heels though…)
