What To Wear To High Tea
High tea is something I adore. Fancy sandwiches, flavoured tea and delicate sweets that I can scoop up in very unladylike handfuls. That has ME written all over it.
Plus let’s not forget about the opportunity to put on a pretty frock.
You know I’m all about the occasion to show off my wardrobe.
I figured that for me to properly exploit my clothing collection I need to change three times per day. I’d probably need a ladies maid to help out and you’ve seen mine before. I don’t think she could handle it. She can’t even seem to get out of her bed before I do in the morning.
The top was a recent thrift find. It has a lovely ruffle detail on one shoulder. Thrifting always makes me stretch my style imagination.
The skirt is very old from Joe Fresh. It is very well made, from their runway collection. I picked it up on super sale back when I still shopped there. The ribbon detail is what attracted me. It is very unique and can be a bit more challenging to style but I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge. Especially when it comes to fashion.
I’m sharing a few snaps of the high tea I put on in February. If you subscribe to my newsletter you would have seen some of these photos and gotten a lowdown on the menu I created.
My floral top matched my cupcakes. Bonus!
The tea turned out so well I’m considering a similar idea for Easter.
I was playing dress up online and came up with another couple of suggestions of what to wear to high tea.
Are you a fan of high tea?

Wow, that’s quite a tea setting and menu! You could have a tea salon: “Suzanne’s Tea Room and Vintage Finds”

I would LOVE that. I just need other people to put up the capital. ; )

I’m a big fan, although carbs and caffeine don’t do me any favors. Your afternoon tea is lovely and worthy of The Empress Hotel Suzanne!
Your attire is entirely adorable!! I have a Joe Fresh cropped blazer that has a bit of similar ribbon detail. I imagine your skirt and my jacket might be a match!
And…Hello gorgeous is right! Hair! Makeup! The fringe length is perfection. New lip colour? I don’t know what, but you look gorgeous!
suzanne carillo says
Funny you mention the carb thing since we felt the same and that is why there are no tops on my sandwiches. It helped a bit.
Also the chocolate muffins have black beans in them and the carrot muffins have almond flour, coconut, carrots and pineapple. The lemon poppyseed muffins have no fat lactose free sour cream in them.
That is too funny that you have the matching blazer for my skirt! Ha ha! Twinsies. I’m sure you also noticed how well made it was for Joe Fresh.
Thanks for the compliments! I think I might have finally sussed out the lighting situation in my office for better photos.

The blouse matches the decor on your walls too! That bow trimmed skirt is adorable and the navy color is chic. And that high tea table setting and food display is a feast for the eyes! BTW, wish you could mail me some of those cupcakes 🙂

So pretty, so fun! I love how your artistry slows from home decor to your gorgeous outfit, to the delightful table setting. Surrounded with beauty! And healthy muffins! xox

I’m right there with you on exploiting my clothing collection, so where are those proper ladies maids? And do you ever ask yourself (like I do) what on earth are you thinking collecting like you do? It’s just part of our inner creative souls, right? And I’m sure Par and Robert will totally agree.
Also why are we not neighbors? That way we could have high tea and least once a week and give us both another excuse for our collection. Great find with that blouse, love it! Love the skirt as well, especially paired so classy with your tights and perfect shoes.
suzanne carillo says
It is a crime we are not neighbours. With our party planning skills you and I could rule the world!
MIS PAPELICOS says
I will start for your hair, I love, love, love that cute fringe. You look like a little girls, ahhhhh just love it.
The skirt pure poetry, just like you.
I left answer in my blog not to miss subject, lol

You know the best thing I like about my hair? It takes all of 5 minutes to do it. All my life it seemed I fought against my natural hair which is bone straight and fine and tried to make it into something it isn’t. About 7 years ago I discovered this cut and have been happy with it ever since.

Speaking as an ex pro hospitality manager who used to cater for the Brit Royal Family and MPs I would definitely give you a job, your food is gorgeous!
Love that outfit and your hair is looking mighty fine. xxx
suzanne carillo says
That must have been so stressful catering for them!

I just love all this! I think an Easter tea is an amazing idea, and I love your unusual skirt. xx
suzanne carillo says
My closet is full of statement pieces. I haven’t worn this for years but hold onto it because it is so well made and so unique.
Jill James says
Suzanne you look so pretty in that gorgeous floral blouse and bow skirt , so ladylike perfect for High Tea.
Your spread looks glorious and reminds me of afternoon teas my late mother and grandmother excelled at. Your flowery china so old worldly perfect.
suzanne carillo says
I do love to mix old china. Most of this was either my Grandmothers or my Moms and I really cherish it.

Even my husband loves high tea—-well, of course, there’s food involved!! Of course we go out to tea…I’ve never tried to make the amazing things you have! You are quite the talented woman!! (Maybe I should come be your ladies maid?)
And I bet most of us can relate to having to change 3X a day in order to wear everything we have in our closets!!
I used to have quite a hat collection, and I’d wear one especially when we went to high tea—it’s the perfect occasion!!
I can see why you love that skirt—so unusual!! jodie

We are traveling over Easter this year, but I’m gonna remember the idea of a high tea for Easter. Such a good thought! Also, not only is the outfit lovely but your hair is so on point! Man!

Love High Tea. My favorite is at the Empress in Victoria. This outfit is so beautiful – springy and playful and so totally you!
suzanne carillo says
My Mom and I went to the Empress for high tea when I used to live there. One of the more expensive high teas I’ve gone to with excellent service. We never had to pour our own tea once. I think we drank two pots!
Another great place for high tea is the Ritz Carlton in San Fran. I highly recommend it if you get the chance.
Andrea@WellnessNotes says
I love high tea but haven’t been in a long time (and have never made it at home). Your cupcakes are the cutest (and I love that you healthified them!). Your open-faced tea sandwiches look delicious, too!
And of course you are wearing the prefect outfit for high tea! I love the details on the skirt paired with the tights & shoes. And the top is so bright & fun and looks prefect with the outfit!
suzanne carillo says
I’m always farking around with recipes as my stomach doesn’t do well with dairy or fat.
Gemma says
That tea! It’s amazing! If people come to mine they get cakes from a box 😉
Your hair also looks amazing in these photos, the colour is just gorgeous!

Oh I love High Tea! I might like dressing up for it the most! :o) My sister and I host Teas for special occasions…or sometimes just to create a special occasion! :o)

I’m a firm aficionado of tea with scones and dollops of jam, Suzanne, how completely la di da. I feel all refined and genteel already 🙂 on a separate note, that flounced and ruffled skirt of yours is worthy of a blog post of its very own. The fabric is gorgeous!! Is it taffeta by chance?
p/s we all ought to sit down for a Skype high tea one day. Wouldn’t it be absolutely mad hatter fun???
Melanie says
Look at Robert’s beaming face! Clearly he knows what a lucky guy he is.
You certainly did figure out your lighting in your office – these photos are excellent! The flowers on your top really look like they cascaded down from the wall. And your skirt with that beautiful bow detail is a perfect match.
Do you think anyone would notice if I put plastic toppers on my cupcakes? I can’t believe you made those! They are absolute perfection. I have had the privilege of tasting Suzanne cooking skills, and holy cow!, who ever thought healthy could taste so decadent?
CiCi Marie says
Took me a couple of beats to realise you were talking about afternoon tea! Can’t get enough of them – it includes both my loves; a buffet of mini food so you can try everything and lots of tea! I am impressed with how well your outfit matches your wall decor… I think the fact the skirt is all one colour would make it quite fun to style.
Señora Allnut says
Oh, yes, I do love it!, love that magnificent display of food, love that lovely service, and love your fabulous outfit!, such a pretty cute skirt, lovely shape and lovely attached ribbons, that’s coolness!!, and your floral top is simply perfect and love how it matches your office wall!, perfect!!
Gorgeous!

Gorgeous outfit. Truly beautiful. Yes, I love high tea!

Whimsical, and darling, and just to my taste as well! How stinkin’ fun! I want to come to your parties! I just listened to an interview about the end of Downton Abbey, and they were talking about how women were expected to change seven times a day for their different social occasions. They talked about it like a chore while I listened to it like, “Yes! Yes! I think my place is in the 1920s British aristocracy. Let me just pack my bags real quick, and we’ll hop in the time machine!”
Thank you for this lovely eye candy!

P.S. Kyle and I went to see Brooklyn over the weekend to celebrate our 12 year dating anniversary. I basically cried from start to finish and loved, loved, loved it. We'll definitely be adding it to our video library!
suzanne carillo says
So happy you enjoyed the film! What did Kyle think of it?
I had no idea it was as many as 7 changes per day! Wow! LOL I can kind of see why they needed ladies maids now.
Liz says
Kyle’s a sappy romantic too, so he also loved it. I think we were both blown away by it. I knew I’d like it, but I had no idea just how much. Kyle only took me to see it because it was our anniversary and he knew I wanted to see it, but he ended up loving it as well. Thanks for the recommendation!

What a lovely outfit. Makes me long for spring. Lately your outfits seem so in tune with the wall behind you.
As for your high tea… all those years in England, learning how to cook and bake, paid off. It looks so lovely.
I clicked through to Anthropology for that blue top… You do your promotion too well. It is sold out.
