I’m back from a whirlwind trip to BC to visit family and friends.
When I arrived this vibrant woman was waiting for me at the airport.
Of course it’s the one and only Mel Kobayashi from Bag and a Beret.
Bloggers Without Limits
Mel and I understand each other perfectly. We know that anything worth doing is worth over doing. The main question when we get together is how much trouble we can get in. There are no limits as long as it’s fun or funny but ideally both.
Middle-aged Tweens
Mel invented the acronym MAT (middle-aged tween) and that is the best way to describe our time together.
Laughing is our number one priority when together.
Mel has so many wonderful creative ideas and one of them was, “2 Strangers On A Plane”. You know, when you’re on a plane and are forced into awkward conversation with the person sitting next to you? We’ve all been there right? I agreed to film the debut episode with Mel as her guest.
On the first day of filming I risked losing my voice from laughing so hard.
We filmed in the tub because it had the best light in our hotel room. We sat next to each other on a little ledge and the tripod was placed at the opposite end inside the tub. It was cozy!
We improvised pretty much everything and laughed until we cried. The usual over fifty thing to do.
That video turned out to be mostly unusable due to lighting issues.
Day two started out with the video below which some of you may have already seen on Mel’s Instagram.
Apparently there is an audience for middle-aged tweens. It has been viewed some 8,800+ times and counting. Who knew?
*Warning* There is talk of Kegels and other wildly inappropriate topics by two women over fifty.
Here is Mel showing how easy it is to be a professional model.
Here I am trying to pose like Mel and failing miserably.
We walked through Nordstrom on our way to the hotel and we expressed how much we’ve both pulled back on our personal style, leaning towards simpler lines and classic, basic styles. Then I caught our reflection while walking by a full length mirror and burst out laughing.
Who are we kidding?
We might be drawn to simple silhouettes and neutral tones but we’re not wearing them. In our minds we’ve gone mainstream but our personal style choices tell a whole other story.
Case in point, we stopped by a Club Monaco for an experiment.
We chose outfits in classic styles and beautiful fabrics and modeled them to see how they would make us feel.
Many people judge our styles to be over-the-top and extravagant.
I’ve heard others say they could never wear what I wear because they’d feel like they’re wearing a costume.
Turns out it’s the exact same for us but in reverse.
Okay Mel looks great in everything, that is clear but can you see the look on my face? That’s me feeling like a total imposter in my clothes. Proof that confidence is everything when it comes to personal style.
And here we are back to our normal selves. Whew.
Have you ever tried to step out of your personal style and try something new?
How did it make you feel?

That is such a great experiment! Go to a store with the opposite style and try on the clothes to see how they feel. You both look great in every outfit—your regular and the more traditional—but it’s clear as day which outfits you too feel the most at home in.
Since I started blogging I’ve pushed myself to try as many style genres as I can get my hands on. Hanging out with you two has helped me take my style to new heights. But it’s been a while since I’ve had that feeling of free-falling in an outfit. You’re inspiring me once again to get out there and PUSH my boundaries…while doing kegels, of course! 🙂💕
Hugs,
Sherry

That is a great description of how this outfit made me feel Sherry, I wasn’t grounded.
Shybiker says
Yay! So happy you had fun. It’s obvious in the pictures. Good for you.
Try something new? Hmm…
suzanne carillo says
I hope you and Patti have a great time together this week!
Taste of France says
This looks like a blast. I’m going to try it with my bestie.
Actually, you both look fantastic no matter what you have on.
Clothes are personal art. Some people are Terry Redlin or Norman Rockwell. Others are Monet or Van Gogh. Others are Rothko or Pollock.
Being in a “costume” can be useful depending on the situation. Or it might just be a way to reflect different moods.
The world would be boring if we were all the same.
suzanne carillo says
That is the joy of personal style and choice right? The opportunity to express ourselves without looking exactly the same as someone else. We’re all unique individuals after all.
Sue Burpee says
Great post, Suzanne. Love those fake model smiles. You are so right about wearing what makes you fell like you. How many times have I tried a style and felt as if I were wearing someone else’s clothes.
P.S. I still remember the time in Kensington Market I took the photo of a woman from the back in a gorgeous long dress and then realized it was you. You do have a wonderful distinctive style.
suzanne carillo says
Ha! Yes I remember that Sue : ) Shame we didn’t realize it at the time. I would have loved to have met you in person.
Nancy says
You two are so wonderful. I miss Mel s blog. Het expression is so fabulous. Your husband knows how to treat you right!
suzanne carillo says
I will tell Mel you miss her blog. She will appreciate that.
Patti says
Ah you two! So creative and gorgeous, and video-genic too. The bathroom selfie made me spit my coffee! xox

What’s even worse Patti was that they had a full length mirror in the bathroom on the back of the door so you could look at yourself on the pot! LOL I’ve lived my whole life not knowing what I looked like while doing that. I would have preferred not to know.

I so enjoy seeing you and Mel hamming it up together. I like the idea of the style experiment, and as it’s been noted by other commenters, it’s easy to see which outfits you are more comfortable in. Mel is so much fun to “play” with, she’s up for (almost) anything and it’s obvious you’re having a good time. The “Strangers on a Plane” was great fun.
suzanne carillo says
I’m glad you liked it Shelley! LOL I really wasn’t sure how people would react. We were just having fun being ourselves.
Ann says
You guys are absolutely hilarious, I laughed so much watching that little video. I’m absolutely in favour of style experiments, as long colour is involved, as I’m feeling completely washed out in neutrals. That look is too grown-up for me, and I guess I’ll never ever grow up. Couldn’t take my eyes off that amazing pleather jumpsuit you’re wearing! xxx
suzanne carillo says
It’s funny that you mention the look was too grown up for you Ann. That’s exactly how I felt. Like someone came along and sucked the fun out of the air.
jodie filogomo says
I bet this was the best Suzanne!!
I do think our style evolves, and once you free yourself from those “shoulds” and “rules” we learn to have fun and be unique. But I think most people have to do it slowly, because you get so used to what you look like now…and change seems weird.
Just like you two dressed traditionally. You look normal. But we obviously know that’s not an adjective used when describing you guys…LOL
XOOX
Jodie
suzanne carillo says
Ha ha! True! Normal would almost be considered an insult to either of us! Ha!
Veronica Cooke says
It looks like you had so much fun! You both look wonderful and I found the video very funny! I never knew those ‘exercises’ had a name! Everyday’s a school day.
How weird to see you both dressed in neutral and mainstream clothes. Dare I say you both looked boring? (Except for Mel’s rather wonderful plaid coat). So much better in your own eclectic and colourful styles.
Your birthday present from your husband was fab and looked amazing on you!
xxxx
suzanne carillo says
Now you know Vronni ; P
Yes, I agree, we looked boring. That’s why I didn’t like it.
I also loved Mel’s plaid coat though…I picked it out for her to try on.
No Fear of Fashion says
“They can bite your finger off”.. whahaha.. That kegel part was hilarious. I do 3 x 5 pelvic floor muscles exercises every day to prevent becoming incontinent. And it works very well.
We should openly talk about this as women over 50.
Of course it will come as no surprise to you that I really loved you in the Club Monaco clothes. Although I am not that classic (anymore) I still love it. Why do I follow your blog and Mel’s? Not because our styles are the same. No I follow you because you are both creative and push boundries. And because you are such sweethearts in real life.

suzanne carillo says
That is too funny you liked us both in the Club Monaco clothes. Mel I can see…but I really did not like what I was wearing AT ALL. It didn’t fit me properly and I felt ugly and fake. Weird right? It reminded me of you when we played dress up at Anja’s and you really hated what you were wearing. Remember? Yeah…same thing.
Thanks for your kind words Greetje : )
Vix says
You two! What fun. I loved the video and aren’t surprised that thousands of people have viewed it, you really are superstars.
How on earth do you look so good after a 3am start?
Those mainstream clothes, they sap the life and vitality out of both of you. I bet those boring old rags cost a fortune, why on earth do people throw money at clothes that only serve to make the wearer look anonymous? There’s no hope, is there?
Having spent years forced to abide by an enforced corporate dress code, I have no desire whatsoever to wear stuff that doesn’t feel like me, I still shudder at the thought of being trapped in a pencil skirt, flesh coloured tights and tailored blazer for the best part of my 20s and 30s! xxx
suzanne carillo says
Honestly I was running fumes at that point Vix. Ha! I’m surprised my eyes are even open.
It is so true that those clothes sapped the life out of us. And you are right…they were insanely expensive. Mel’s sweater alone was over $400!
Theresa says
You both are hilarious. I too love acting silly with my friends. I suspect some people think we’re acting immature for our age, but we don’t really care. And now I have a name for what we do, Middle Age Tweening. There is absolutely nothing better than acting goofy and cracking up laughing with your girlfriends, especially if trying on clothing is involved.
Love your outfits. Pleather jumpsuit is amazing, as is Mel’s fuschia jacket. And even in your more “Toned down” looks your vibrant personalities stand out. Two beautiful, funny, creative ladies!
suzanne carillo says
I was worried we were going to get a bunch of comments to “act our age”. Thank heavens that didn’t happen.
Thanks Theresa : )
Deborah Stinedurf says
Omg…you two are so much fun! Your experiment unequivocally proves personal style is so much more than simply choosing an outfit. Our style is truly an outward representation of who we are on the inside and trying to wear something that doesn’t jive is akin to trying to be someone else. xo

It really did feel like I was playing a part. I agree, it’s best just to be ourselves. I felt really uncomfortable trying to be someone I’m not.

love this post!
once – in my misspend youth – i needed a waitress uniform of white button down blouse and black pencil skirt for a catering sevice job….. i bought that in a 2.hand shop and the friend, who was with me, said: “you look like a fish with a bike”…..
xxxx
suzanne carillo says
Ha ha! I’m totally going to use “a fish with a bike” again : )
Nicole says
I know what mean about dressing in a style that isn’t your own. I feel very out of my element when I’m wearing non-vintage inspired clothing! If I wear jeans and a t-shirt (usually for “work” projects) I feel so strange… and conspicuous too!
