Chic Comfortable Style
This is how I do chic comfortable style on days when I can’t be bothered to wear jeans.
I mentioned before that maxi skirts are like wearing yoga pants. When made out of a cotton jersey like this fitted maxi pencil skirt it borders on PJ level comfort.
This maxi skirt had a very small slit at the back and I had to open it up so I could walk like a normal human being and not shuffle along like a penguin. I am not known for taking baby steps.
The top isn’t fitted or tucked, two things that can spell disaster for women with chesticles, but the fitted leather jacket helps a bit.
The French Bulldog bag adds the touch of whimsy required for all my outfits. I wish they would make a similar bag with a pug.
I have made my own DIY pug totes in the past but would really like the image on a leather bag. If I can find a good leather tote while thrifting I might just try painting on it.
Have you ever used Rimmel Provocalips? I’m wearing that here. The colour is quite a bit darker than what I normally wear. It felt like I was putting silicone on my lips. I decided to remove it after wearing it for a few hours and it wouldn’t come off. Even with makeup remover! It is classified as 16 hour lipstick. It worries me what kind of chemicals are in the lipstick when I basically have to scrape it off with my nails.
I don’t have much luck with lipstick or makeup for that matter. I had a favourite lipstick from Revlon and they discontinued it. Of course! Now none of their new colours work. Don’t you hate it when that happens? Also I’m finding that the older I get the more that lipstick seems to dry out my lips.
(research pause)
I just looked up that most of the drugstore brands I use for makeup still test on animals. I am 100% not okay with that. I will be switching brands immediately. I cannot believe that they still do that. Apparently Marcelle and Physician’s Formula are cruelty free.
Have you ever had difficulty removing makeup?
How do you feel about animal testing?

Love a knit maxi skirt! I always pack one for travel and wear it a LOT. You look gorgeous and your necklace is killer-good.
I usually end up with creamy lipsticks after trying the long-wears – I too find them so drying. The one I had made in New York is pretty perfect, and I plan to get more when I’m there. The lippie you’re wearing does look super glam, but I don’t think it should stay on like paint! xoxo
I had a lovely stretchy maxi like yours and stupidly left it in India a couple of years ago – I’m scouring the chazzas for a replacement, they work brilliantly with everything from crop tops to waistcoats.
LOVE love love the pug bag and no-one wears a beret as well as you do.
I’m all about cruelty-free make-up. I think you can get a British brand called “Sleek” on-line, animal friendly, great quality for the money and it gets favorably compared to MAC. xxx
I think all cosmetics and toiletry products are animal-testing/cruelty free by law if they are made in the UK (and latterly the EU). However, there are some manufacturers that just import them from elsewhere to get around this. http://www.peta.org.uk/living/easy-way-go-cruelty-free/
Sleek is good (you can get it in Superdrug too

It’s unnecessary and cruel to test on animals. We should register our opinion on that by what we buy. I’ve never had trouble getting makeup off — but I’ve worried about if I’ll be able to when I’m going out in public later.
I no longer will buy cosmetics tested on animals and have found the Wet n Wild makes a great Lip Balm Pencil and Physicians Formula Mascara in the weird lime green curvy tube is very good! EO body products are my favorite and I’ve been trying and liking BWC face products. Still figuring it out myself! On the pricy end, Make Up Forever base and Bobbi Brown eyeshadow. Addicted to (bad) Revlon Blackberry eyeliner pencil, but it is discontinued so need to find a cruelty-free alternative.
This is a great look and I don’t wear maxi skirts much not because I don’t like them but they are too casual for my office and a bit too fancy for the weekend.
As for dry lips, it is so tough for me to wear lipstick now days. It just shows how awfully chapped they are. I have started using tinted lip balm and that seems to be better. I think I may have mentioned in the pass that I sold make up and ours is not animal tested and I am pretty addicted to their lip balms.

Hope to see you for TBT Fashion Link up!
A definite no on animal testing. There is just no reason for it. Love this whole look, and a pug bag would be amazing. Maybe I should try a “no jeans for a month” challenge with myself. I wear them too often.
Wait, chesticles? Hahahaha!!! I love that. You really ought to trademark that word. And yes, anything which skims the body and in jersey is a winner in my books. The sort of garment one can sleep in, and dream. I’ve found some gym leggings which do that but not skirts. Yet.
When it comes to lipsticks, I’ve never been fond of Rimmel. Their colours either disappear after a mere sip of water or, as in your case, go on forever. The organic brands I’ve come to love because not only are they miraculous on my tumultuous hormone-wracked skin, the colours are rich and long-lasting. Try Ilia, Cate McNabb, Vapour or W3LL People.
Love the combo of your necklace, top, and jacket. Can’t wear a jersey skirt myself, but it looks great on you. I definitely agree with you and the others about animal testing. It’s awful, and there will always be an alternative. Once I take a stand on something I care about like this, the alternative almost seems to find me!
About your favorite lipstick, have you tried googling discontinued cosmetics. Maybe you can still get it.

Oh gosh I would worry too how that lipstick was staying on through all that! I just tried Burt’s Bees new lipstick and so far I think I like it.

Stretchy maxi skirts look so good! I see loads of them on the girls when I drop my daughter off at school and always want to add a dozen to my wardrobe. You look amazing in yours.
My daughter is very anti-animal testing, so I found a site called Leaping Bunny that lists all of the cruelty-free brands they can find. Some companies use the little bunny logo on their products to show that they are “Leaping Bunny approved” but it can be hard to see.
Have you ever thought of making a leather tote from an old leather coat that’s too worn out to wear? Maybe someone there makes them – your area seems to have lots of creative types.
at least you are wearing a skirt and NOT yoga pants! haha. There is an area here in SF where many women wear yoga pants as regular attire – and not because they just came from yoga. In fact, when my husband first moved to SF he wondered why they were wearing it so often. haha.

I’ve experienced that Suzanne, where the stay on lipsticks dry out my lips…I can wear them occasionally, just not everyday.
And you’re right about thinking about the chemicals in these products. I never used to worry about those things, but the older I get, the more I realize that it all has an affect (or is it effect—i always get those mixed up)
As for your outfit—you’re a smart cookie to make the slit bigger (either that or it would happen unintentionally, huh?). I love the addition of the beret—it makes the outfit sing!

It seems that I may have a severe lack of maxi skirts in my closet. That’s the wonderful thing about your posts Suzanne, as they show me what I still need to acheive style-wise. This kind of maxi seems like the perfect daywear, and uber comfy too. The make-up, in particular the lipstick, issue is a real worry. I often think about all of the lipstick I consume as I chomp away on an apple at work, seeing my lipstick smeared onto the skin as I’m eating. All those chemicals ending up inside where it’s not really intended. Hmmm, not good, eh?

A maxi knit skirt would be a great alternative for jeans in summer. I find jeans can be a bit too hot and uncomfortable in warmer months. And you’d also want to feel comfortable in the heat, so something simple like that might be perfect. Will you do a hot weather update on the skirt? Is the material suitable for hot weather?
Love that skirt and how it shows your perfect behind heh heh. You were right to add the leather jacket. That bag really puts the salt in the outfit. Love it. I hope you find a leather bag and can paint a pug on it. Try it on a few cheap leather ones, then buy an expensive one.
And yes I hate it when they discontinue my make-up items. Recently I had a make-up make-over and surprisingly I came away with lots of good stuff and colours. I really like it.

Lipstick has always dried out my lips, even as a teen.
I am addicted to lip balm!
I usually wear a layer of balm, then lipstick, then more balm…or sometimes just layers of balm!!
My lips end up looking like a cat’s behind without.

I’m a true animal lover so of course I disagree with testing on animals. I’ve never tried that brand of lipstick, in fact, I’ve never heard of it. So glad to hear I’m not alone with the age factor of lip wearing. Let me know what research you come up with.
As for your outfit, it’s fabulous! The maxi is much better than jeans.
Great look! Maxi skirts are great – they can be so comfortable yet put together! I think the jacket adds just the right structure to your outfit! Cute bag, too!
I once had a lipstick that I couldn’t get off for more than a day. I didn’t use it again as what was probably in it scared me… My husband’s cousin started a natural cosmetics line that uses vegetable pigments and doesn’t test on animals, and I have been using her lip gloss for the past six months or so (she doesn’t make lipstick). It feels great and is very moisturizing, but since it’s a gloss, it’s not super pigmented, but I feel good about putting it on my skin. I recently read somewhere that our skin can absorb things in 23 seconds, and it really made me think about what I put on it… I know I’m still using some products I need to find a replacement for…
Have a fabulous Sunday!

You look so good in this outfit. I especially love the bag! I have never heard of a lipstick that won’t come off, that is wild! I use sheer ones usually and I definitely layer on gloss. All that matte lipstick is in right now and I am not a fan. It is pretty dry and the colors are too intense for me for daytime. I like Chanel, the sheer ones, Rouge Coco Shine, I think it’s called. But I have to use a gloss on top because that dries out too. I normally pair it with YSL Volupte Sheer Candy which YSL says is a glossy lip balm. Great formula, sheer color but it’s buildable color, which I like. I do not like animal testing. I hope none of the brands I like are doing that. I will have to find out. I am a big fan of makeup artist Lisa Eldridge, on her homepage is a post about 3 natural mascara brands she likes. She may have more recommendations! xx
First of all I LOVE your outfit. The maxi and the boots. Epic.
Now for the lipstick.
When I was younger, I wore dark lipstick and stains and gloss all the time because I had a nice fetching mouth.
But now that I’m older, those fat lips are no longer attractive so I have to be a bit more subtle with my lip color and stick to mostly neutrals or berries. And I try to use cosmetics that aren’t tested on animals!
I find that some of these liquid lipsticks just seem to hang around for ages, even if they appear to have been removed on the surface of it. I’ve got a Bourjois one that without fail will leave red all over my pillow, even if it has been scrubbed clean the night before. I am yet to find a lipstick that has good staying power but can be removed easily and, oh, is comfortable… I actually think all of these things must be contradictions and they can’t exist in one product!
Dear Suzanne, I am sorry not to read the post completely, but I caught the awful swine flu and feeling really bad. But one thing I say, you always look classy and I love maxi skirts – now I always think of what you say, yoga pants – they really are good! Bisous!

You look smoking hot in that skirt! As far as removing makeup, I really like Clinique’s Take the day off BALM (not the liquid) it removes stubborn waterproof mascara and I’m pretty sure it would remove the long lasting lipstick too. I can’t believe that there are still makeup brands out there testing on animals! BOO!!!
That is a divine look for when jeans won’t cut the mustard. Comfortable, sassy and chic. I love maxi skirts. I only have one at the moment and I wear it to death. I want to buy more but they are like gold dust for a petite like me. And when I do find one, often the material is such poor quality that I pass.
I’d hate the idea of a 16 hour lipstick. I’m not really into make up but with toiletries I always try to buy organic and brands that don’t test on animals. There really is no need for it.
