Cold Shoulder Fantasy Dress
I never thought I’d join the crowd with this whole cold shoulder trend but you never know what delights are waiting for you at the thrift store.
Thank you Talize!
Despite this clearly not being vintage and produced by a fast fashion company I couldn’t leave this dress behind, especially when I saw the ruffle sleeves. At least I’ve rescued it from the landfill and now it is taking up precious space in my dress closet.
Yes, I have a closet just for dresses.
Don’t judge.
Normally I stay away from off the shoulder dresses because I’m constantly having to adjust them to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.
This dress has some amazing sticky plastic trim that lines the shoulders and neck so it stays in place by sticking to your body like a plastic bag. Since the strip is very narrow it isn’t as awful as it sounds. It works surprisingly well.
Another reason I normally stay away from off the shoulder anything is because I need to wear a bra. Most strapless bras creep down to my waist after wearing them for thirty minutes but this fantasy dress makes creeping anywhere impossible as nothing moves once I’ve poured myself into it.
The dress is like wearing Spanx on the outside.
Thankfully it’s not uncomfortable as it is made out of spandex and cotton however I do worry a bit about bumps and bulges happening where they shouldn’t so I opted for some interior Spanx as well.
The Spanx aren’t as scary as when they tried to kill me.
These small ones only cover the Buddha belly and smooth out any kind of VPL, which surprisingly does not stand for the obvious, Very Pokey Lumps but rather the more politically correct, Visible Panty Lines.
This dress is what I would call a Jessica Rabbit dress, I may be the villain or the hero but I’m no victim.
This fantasy dress owns the room.
This would not be considered age appropriate attire for a woman over fifty by most magazines or websites.
This is more, “I appreciate the body I have” appropriate.
I’m probably not always going to feel like pouring myself into a bold red body con dress. Best enjoy it while I can.
How do you show appreciation for the body you have now?
Linking up with the lovely Patti over at Visible Monday.

So amazing! Ummm, is there something wrong with a closet just for dresses? Eek!
suzanne carillo says
Ha ha! Of course nothing is wrong with having a closet just for dresses! That’s totally normal ; )
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
This is one beauty of an off the shoulder dress! You look gorgeous!
suzanne carillo says
Thanks Sue : )
Vix says
Don’t you look fabulous? That dress looks wonderfully authentic and you are living proof that redheads totally can wear red!!
I’ve always been an off-the-shoulder kinda girl. Shoulders are powerful and sexy and need to be flashed at all times! xxx
suzanne carillo says
You do look great in off-the-shoulder. If it weren’t for my chesticles I’d wear this style more often.

Fantastic dress Suzanne and you look smokin’ hot in it. Gail x

Thanks Gail : )

I love your “jessica rabbit” dress on you ….. fabulous!
Love these “fantasy dresses” posts ….
I am working on appreciating my body …. Thanks
suzanne carillo says
Honestly I could do an entire blog on only fantasy dresses. That’s how much I love them. I’d have to have a whole other life though filled with red carpet events and galas to attend.
One of these days I need to wear a dress like this to take my pug for a walk. Ha ha! That’d get the neighbours talking.
Bobbi says
Wow! You look amazing in that dress – like a movie bad girl ready to bring a “good guy” to his knees, begging for more.
I know that Melanie has been asked to model, but have you? You look great in everything.
suzanne carillo says
Ha! Thanks for the vote of confidence Bobbi!
No I have not been asked to model. I do not have the body or face of a model like Melanie. She is a pro.
I have a knack for choosing the right pieces for my body type though. It’s all about accentuating the positive. That and getting the right lighting and angles ; )

Fabulous dress Suzanne! It does not look tight just perfectly fitted and alluring ! Sometimes fast fashion does get it right and good for you from saving it from landfill. Superb on you and yes to the dress closet!

I agree that sometimes fast fashion does get it right. Now if they could just change their business plan to something more earth friendly.
Elle says
Amen to that Suzanne! Our landfills are poisonous.

You look FABULOUS. If one still has the beautiful bod you possess, you may as well enjoy it. This dress highlights your natural bounty.
I like the plastic strip idea; I’ve had items that required something like that and I used double-stick tape to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.
Can I reveal something that women don’t realize? Most men are turned on by VPL; it reminds them that a women is wearing sexy underwear. Women seem to worry about and conceal the outline of their panties but men wish they wouldn’t.
suzanne carillo says
And here all along I thought men preferred no underwear. What do I know?
Ann says
That is one hell of a dress and you are looking fabulous in it! And there’s nothing wrong with having a closet just for dresses. In fact, I think that’s quite normal. Isn’t it? xxx
suzanne carillo says
Well I think for a few of us bloggers it is quite normal : )
Shelley@ForestCityFashionista says
Your life definitely needs more cocktail parties and fancy dress occasions so these amazing dresses can be shown off. The colour of this dress is gorgeous on you; YES! Redheads can wear red. I would have been seduced by the sleeves as well.
I have also heard that men are turned on by VPL. I even dated a guy that thought it was sexy when women wore white pants with their underwear showing through, which I though was just tacky. What do I know?

This is a gorgeous dress, and you you look amazing in it (I love your hair, have you had your fringe trimmed?) The backdrop/wall you use is perfect, and adding that magnificent blue covered chair is a picture of colour and life. Beautiful photos and story. xx
jodie filogomo says
I see absolutely nothing inappropriate about this dress. And oh, my golly don’t you just look amazing???
I finally succumbed to the OTS this summer, and I was totally surprised at how fun it was—-who knows why I felt that way….but I did!!
It was so nice that you rescued this dress. It reminds me of how we say we rescued our kitties. Now I’m totally going to use that term next time I’m shopping at the thrift store—it sounds way better than just buying something…
XOXO

By wearing a bodycon dress tomorrow on the blog!
The red is a perfect shade of red. I don’t like all shades of red, never wear them either. And you look Devine woman!
Theresa Campbell says
Yowza, Suzanne! The word “bombshell” immediately comes to mind. And I think it would be fine for a woman over 50 to wear. Heck I wouldn’t think twice about wearing it. Love red and the color looks great on you. The sleeves are fab and the dress is body conscious in a very flattering, classy way. I don’t think it’s too tight at all. Love it with the gold shoes.
I’m sure you’ll come up with a perfectly good reason to take it out for a spin 🙂

That dress + your body = PERFECTION!!
What a find!
Marilee Gramith says
You are just a knockout in this dress Suzanne. I don’t have your curves but if I did I would embrace them in all of the ways that felt good. You look magnifique!!
No Fear of Fashion says
Absolutely fxcking terrific. What a dress, what a body!!! Keep pouring yourself in it while you can darling and make every woman in the room, no matter what age, green with envy.
As for the sticky bits… I use Dress Tape to keep things in place. As, like you, I hate having to pull a shoulder up. You don’t feel it while wearing, you don’t see it and when you wear something which is a little see-through, like my green knitted jumper… (WHY?) put the dress tape near your shoulders.
Safety pins are my other life savers.

lovely ‘jessica rabbit’ dress! ;DD and you look so gorgeous wearing it!, it fits you like a dream!.
I think that a body-con dress could be worn whatever your age, if you feel comfortable in it! and this one looks so fabulous!
Having a wardrobe just for dresses is something perfectly normal. Indeed. I would love to have one!
besos
Laurie says
I agree with Greetje. I’m already green with envy! That really is a showstopper!
I would wear it with the same ammunition to hide my lumps and bumps too. I don’t like wearing spanks or any type of body control underwear, but sometimes they are essential xx

This look is fabulous! I was just dress shopping with my 72 year old mother on Monday and we both (I’m 51) loved the same dresses, well, most of them. She would absolutely love this dress too and would wear it in a heartbeat if it would fit.
Denise says
I loved this red dress and it looks amazing on you! I think you are so right, it is like Jessica Rabbit and you are also right, maybe magazines would suggest another dress, but who cares? It’s great to like the body one has, and you look fabulous! How I appreciate the body I have, I don’t know… I have a new body for 6 years, and I still do not recognize it, but that is who I am now and I accept it somehow 🙂 I am glad you the bra didn’t move, this dress is really amazing! Bisous!

WOW, what a dress – you look fabulous. ‘Age appropriate’? Couldn’t care less. There was an article in the paper the other week listing all the things you shouldn’t do/wear over forty. I was happy to note that I’m still doing/ wearing most of the things that I shouldn’t. (I’m in my seventies and I ain’t planning to change!)

Love that you styled this with a red lippy!!!

Sherry - Petite Over 40 says
Va-Va-VOOM! Another stunner, Suzanne!! And, seriously, I can never imagine a point in time when you will feel too old for this dress. Not you. You are the superhero of ageless fashion! This dress proves it because, you’re right, no fashion magazine would feature a woman over 50 wearing this dress and yet here you are blowing the pixels off my screen like the red-dressed siren that you are!
I see you wearing this when you’re 85 and 90 and causing all the heads in the assisted living complex to turn. By then the concern won’t be whether you can wear this dress because of your age but whether it’s a safety hazard for the guys with weak hearts who might die as a result of your very presence in the room!
Hugs,
Sherry
