Gingham For Summer
I can tell what time of the year it is when gingham prints make their annual appearance.
Without fail gingham ushers in spring and summer with its timeless playful print.
I am drawn to gingham because it is a pattern that combines effortlessly with other patterns.
Depending on the size of the check, gingham can read like texture to the eyes.
The top I’m wearing below is a very small gingham.
More Gingham Love
The photo below is one of my favourite vintage dresses of all time.
My husband gifted me this ruffled midi gingham skirt when I was in Hong Kong recently.
To make it my own I added some red trim to the bottom hem and the embroidered floral patches.
This may not be a vintage piece but it is one-of-a-kind.
Aren’t the little vintage shoes wonderful?
I discovered them as well as this beauty at Salvation Army recently…
Sweet!
I’ve been buying and seeing lots red lately at the thrift stores. Red is a colour that I didn’t often wear in the past but lately I’m really loving this powerful statement colour.
I picked up this gorgeous vintage blue velvet chair this week from an online estate sale for $35.
It came with a matching foot stool. I still haven’t figured out where I’m going to use the footstool but I knew this chair would be amazing in both my office and bedroom.
Added bonus…it’ll be great for photos : )
Yes, bloggers think of weird crap like that.
Are you a fan of gingham for summer?

OOOOH…your new skirt is gorgeous Suzanne! Such a unique hemline. I also love the trims that you’ve added. It’s so flirty and feminine!
Sigh…I would love a gingham shirt in every colour in my wardrobe. If only to find good quality gingham to sew…
suzanne carillo says
Yes it was the hemline that caught my eye. I *knew* you’d enjoy this post : )
Sherry says
All these gingham combinations you’ve put together definitely remind me of spring and summer! They’re so fresh and happy.
That red gingham skirt Robert gave you is too cute! Sue said it best: so flirty and feminine! Your added touches make it perfectly yours.
Hugs,
Sherry

Do you know that I don’t have any gingham in my closet? I know, and I call myself a fashion blogger???
But I do plan to remedy that fault—soon, I hope!!
You are quite the amazing, creative person, Suzanne. I wouldn’t have thought to add that trim & embroidery to the skirt, but it’s incredible!
And red?? It’s lovely on you. I can’t imagine why you haven’t been wearing it before!

the chair is stunning too—of course i think that way too…it’s called craziness!! 🙂
suzanne carillo says
For a self confessed hard core obsessed embellisher I’m surprised you wouldn’t have thought of the trim and patches. You think of everything else.
I cannot believe that you don’t own any gingham. It’s a thrifting emergency! Get thee to a thrift store STAT and remedy that oversight.
robjodiefilogomo says
Made me giggle—that’s for sure!! We are going shopping on Thursday—there could be some gingham in my future….
I’m not sure I would have thought of trim on this skirt because it wasn’t a “plain” skirt! But I can see how it’s almost better on the print!! 🙂

Yes!
I love how you’ve styled your gingham garments and have given me some inspiration for the summer.
I love your red gingham skirt and what you have done to it – you’ve farked it as Melanie would say! The red shoes and bag were such wonderful finds.
The blue chair is gorgeous and it will be fantastic for photographs – I’d love to see the matching footstool…
Have a great week.
suzanne carillo says
The footstool is still trying to figure out a place to call home in my house. I have a feeling it might end up downstairs or as a prop for some photos for my Etsy store.

I LOVE every one of the gingham stylings you’ve shown here. I have gingham but it is the large check (often called buffalo plaid) and it is a little tougher to mix with florals but I think it’s really great with small stripes.
Gingham is such a classic pattern. I agree with Sherry D. that it adds a “fresh” vibe! Your gift skirt is SO CUTE!!! Robert knows you well and what a lovely way to express his love! Lots of husband’s just don’t notice…
I purchased some gingham sneakers recently but haven’t worn them yet. Your post has inspired me to style them with a great floral dress I just bought at a consignment shop! Thanks Suzanne!
suzanne carillo says
I find the Buffalo plaid much harder to wear and style. It also looks strange on me because I’m not tall enough to carry it off.
That is one of the many things I adore about my husband he has a great eye for fashion and style. A bit of a metrosexual which is fine by me.
Gingham sneakers sound so cool!

What a pretty new skirt! I love gingham, but I don’t wear it as well as you!
suzanne carillo says
Yes you do Lana : )

I am in love with that chair!! And what a great deal. I’ve been looking for something similar but all I can find are super expensive ones like these: https://www.grahamandgreen.co.uk/occasional-chairs
I like how you customised your skirt, that’s such a good idea x

Your post has made me realize that I don’t have much gingham in my wardrobe, which is something I must remedy soon! I love how you customized that skirt, and I have red bag envy, as I’ve been looking for one for ages. This one certainly is a beauty! The chair is such a good buy: I love its vibrant colour and I don’t think it’s weird at all that you’re thinking it will be perfect for blog photos … xxx
suzanne carillo says
Two readers now that don’t own any gingham!
Yes I snatched that bag up quick as a whip when I saw it hanging there on its own. It is in fantastic shape.
As much as I love framed handbags I often won’t take them out because I find them a pain to carry. I guess in the old days they didn’t need to do stuff with their hands all the time.
Vix says
I love your customised ruffly skirt, it’s stunning. What a great eye your husband has!
That chair is incredible and I love the red handbag so much. xxx

I don’t have any gingham in my closet either. I don’t think I’ve ever found a piece in a shape that I like. I’ve always liked your black and white checked dress and would definitely wear something like that. Your new gingham skirt is lovely, especially with the addition of the trim and applique. The handbag is a great score, but like you, I find it awkward not to have both hands free. I found a lovely little red, white and blue summer straw handbag in Denver so I’m going to have take it out a least a few times.

Love these gingham pieces Suzanne! I especially love the first outfit and am so impressed with what you did to the red skirt! You are such a good stylist. Love the blue chair, and I agree – can’t wait to see you in it!

I have some gingham but not much. It is not the first thing I go for. Stripes are more my thing. Strange though as I really like gingham. Like all the outfits you wear. Very nice new additions (skirt, shoes, bag– oh yes the bag–, chair and the footstool will also prove to be an eye catcher.

Oh yes, I recently bought a gingham dress! I love how you make a new garment your own. And the chair is fabulous!
Melanie says
Your additions to your new skirt make it sing that much louder – in harmony I should say, not off key. Excellent farking!! I love all your ginghams and I feel an emergency coming on. I do have one pair of gingham elephant leg pants hiding in the space bags – groan. Maybe it’s time for a dig. They are seersucker too, even better.
theartyologist says
I love gingham! And I love pairing it with other prints too! The red skirt is so fun, and I like how you added trim to it as well.
And- that chair for $35!?!? That is a great score Suzanne. And, haha, I think of blogger stuff like that too. 🙂 🙂
