When I first spotted these oversized blanket scarves I wondered what all of the fuss was about.
Then I wanted one for myself.
Then I needed to figure out just how to style a blanket scarf.
Basically you are wearing a picnic sized blanket around your neck.
Super handy should you need to have an emergency picnic.
In winter.
Or hold up a bank with your plaid bandanna blanket.
Hat – Gap (sim), Boots – Consignment (sim plus they look warm), Sweater (sim- I love the look of this one on sale!) & gloves (sim on sale!)– TJ Maxx, Skirt (sim great black one) & Scarf (sim but even prettier!)– Zara, Handbag – Vintage (sim), Jacket – Danier (sim on sale!)
I feel like a hobo…have blanket…will travel.
I must admit I’m a bit hooked now and I bought 2 other blanket scarves in the last month.
At least if anything, when we have overnight house guests I won’t be short on blankets.
To style it I just folded the square blanket into a triangle, wrapped it once around my neck (pointy part of triangle in front) and tied the ends together in front. Anything more than that and it is too much like wearing a bulky neck brace.
This whole outfit was created because of this set I created on Polyvore. That damn Polyvore is like crack. I don’t need marketers to tell me to buy more…I’ll convince myself!
Another leather jacket I spotted that is similar now on SUPER sale

A blanket scarf… It will all make sense when the weather gets colder, the first snow storm hits… I keep buying cashmere pashminas, wear them all winter as a scarf, perfect.
I need to think of that. They truly would be perfect and so soft against the skin. Great tip!
Wish I could wear a scarf like that but I would die a thousand hot-flash deaths.
I am def wanting that skirt!

I am LOVING that skirt. The sihlouette is not an easy one to find. One thing…don’t expect to walk fast while wearing it, and if you need to run, you will need to hike it up to your knees. It is very much a wiggle skirt. There is only a small slit in the back. Also the sizing on this is really weird. Normally I take a small, I’m wearing a large here. Be sure to size up. I do love it though and am seriously considering buying the blue one as well.
Love it – these are warm *and* great looking. Your curls looks awesome too! Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, xox.
Those curls deprived me of a decent night’s sleep. I have to wet set my hair to get it to go like that. Not an issue you would understand…curly locks! ; )
Great outfit ! You look fantastic 🙂 love the scarf 🙂 x
Thanks for popping by Beata : )
What a great scarf! And it looks great with the hat…you look warm and stylish!
Thanks Pam : )
I love the curls! I think these scarves can definitely be useful, if you suddenly find yourself outdoors and you weren’t quite prepared for the weather you can easily wrap most of your body up in such a scarf.
Very true.
We are on the blanket scarf wave length today!! The colors of your scarf is gorgeous. I am still on the fence about having a giant scarf as know cold in California is low 60s so that means this gets pretty useless as a scarf.
If you want to add another one to your closet, I am hosting a giveaway on one too 🙂

I really like this trend, it’s also like carrying a picnic blanket around with you, so if the weather’s nice you can whip it off and lay it on the ground, voila!
x
Yeah I wrote about the whole emergency picnic thing ; ) That and robbing a bank.
Its the bag and the curls I’m loving and that gorgeous piece of wearable art! xxx
Thanks Vix! Those necklaces take a long time to make. I have to hand burn all of the edges of each one of the petals on the roses and then stitch them together. Very time consuming, but in the end, also very unique.
Beautiful scarf. Beautiful skirt and jacket. I am always puzzled by such a look: looks ever so cool, but I think: “cold bum, cold legs” … “Where is the long, warm coat”? And if you are indoors, do you still wear such a scarf?
I bought a leather jacket with a charming big scarf a couple of years ago and have been wrestling with this question ever since.
The necklace you made is beautiful but I hope I don’t win it this time. I have so many beautiful necklaces and the one I got from Anja last summer reminds me of yours. I don’t want to have too much choice haha. Confuses me.
Greetje
PS such a skirt is so nice on you. It would make me “out of proportion”. Alas.
I disagree. Having long legs means you look more like a model and doesn’t make you look disproportionate at all. I have a feeling you and I won’t agree on that though ; )
I must see Anja’s necklace. I make each petal for each rose by hand, burning all of the edges and then stitching them together. It wouldn’t surprise me though that she has created similar ones. She is so creative.
I have on tights underneath that skirt. Also…when one has a more fat on their bum it helps to protect it from the cold LOL. When it is -20 though I will wear a down coat or one that goes all the way down to my ankles or simply refuse to leave the house. At that temperature no one cares how they look. They are just trying to avoid freezing to death.
If the house is cold I will wear a scarf all day inside, but usually it is smaller than this one.
I love this trend but not sure how I will not look swallowed by all that material especially when I stand a mere 5’3″. You look perfect and the whole ensemble fits well with the scarf.
You are one inch shorter than I. I would suggest a scarf that isn’t made out of a thick material. A thin merino wool would work. They lay flat then and don’t add bulk.
Yes they are big but I have found them very comfortable and they keep me warm! I was very tempted to buy another one, but since I will only spend 2 more weeks in winter this year, I decided to be sensible…. If I was living in your climate though I would live in this things and use them as blankets whenever needed!
Love your whole look by the way!
I kept thinking to myself I’d seen that scarf before on someone…of course it is you! LOL I also bought the same one you did. Great minds…and all. ; )
I have been so busy, that I did not read up on any blogs at all for a few weeks. Now I’m back, only to discover that your blog has been revamped.
Wow, loving it! Also the subtitle (style, smiles and stories) is great;-).
Well done, dear! You truly ARE a badass blogger.
Hilarious post again, the way you describe this type of shawl. The look though is seriously comfy and cool. And good to know that you will have enough blankets if this cold-hater ever visits you! There was a hint of snow this morning in Amsterdam; crazy!
Thank you for my tag line lady! : ) Turned out it was just what I needed.
Wow…you went from what…35 every day to below zero. That must be a shock on the system!
Lookin’ good there! Love the scarf, love the look. Girl, I’ve got scarves of all kinds. I went through my stash just recently and had to give some away (no more room!). At the moment, I’m hooked on the bulky infinity scarves I can wrap around my neck two or three times (they stay put).
I need to go through my stash as well. But instead I went and picked up another scarf from a thrift store yesterday. LOL
A wonderful boho look.. You’ve done a great job with the neutrals, and bookending the scarf with the boot color..
You’re rocking that leather jacket again, Suzanne, I love it with the jersey skirt and massive scarf. I think I might feel a little too bundled up with all that fabric around my face, but hey, when the weather gets really freezing, I might change my mind! xxx
This leather jacket has become my new best friend. I’m happy since it was a bit of an investment when compared to the regular thrift store items I buy.
I thought the fabric would bother me too, but yesterday, in the wind, I was grateful for protecting my face.
I love both your scarf and your jacket. I’ve been looking for a blanket scarf but I just can’t find one I like. I really go for peachy coral colours so I would love to find one just like yours. Gorgeous black leather! You look great.
I keep meaning to get a blanket scarf and try it out! Looks so cozy! Love your whole outfit and that long grey skirt looks AMAZING on you!

Gorgeous way to style the blanket scarf! You look fabulous. Love the curls, hat, scarf…all of it. Bravo!
Thanks Jennifer. Those curls aren’t easy to come by for a gal that has bone straight fine hair. I have to put it up at night while wet into little buns. Not the best for a comfortable night’s sleep. I’m still trying to figure out how to do it correctly. I don’t know how my Mom used to manage to sleep in pin curls at night.
I have to confess that I have never been a real fan of blanket scarves but you have styled yours so nicely!
The long skirt suits you very well and the jacket gives the look with a beautiful modern touch …
p.s.
Thank you for your comment! I am feeling very better now and before long I will start posting again…
p.s.2
The necklace is wonderful! Really my style!!
Glad to hear you are feeling better. I’m sure that was such a shock.
Maybe you’ll win the necklace : ) I could see it going well with your wardrobe.
Yes, the blanket scarf is a helluva lot of scarf to work with…but with that being said, I do love mine. I saw a woman on Instagram who cut hers in half to make it more user friendly, but I’m too afraid! I’m diggin’ yours with the gray and black, love the skirt btw.

I have one scarf that I’d like to do that with. It really does look more like a blanket than a scarf…but like you, I’m too scared.
I have several blanket scarves, and love them. You look warm and stylish, which is a beautiful combination. Your hat is the perfect topper for this cold weather look. Thank you for sharing with Hat Attack!
Ooooohhh! I love how you styled your blanket scarf! And the colors are so pretty. I also love the pencil shaped maxi. Super smart silhouette with the bulky scarf. I own one blanket scarf. I do like it but I admit it was kind of a stupid purchase living in California. I have worn it all of one time. I do get to bust out the rain boots today! And my husband is leaving work early! And I get to meet my girlfriends for lunch in a little bit! Lots to be grateful for… Knock on wood.
Jenni
Sounds like the perfect day : )
Love the textured grey skirt <3 I'm horrible at wrapping scarves, including blanket scarves. I like how you styled it here!

It is a learned art…no doubt about it.
Your photos are beautiful! Always a pleasure to look at. I love scarves! I have a rather extensive collection and have a draft ready, but still want to take some more photos of my scarves. Probably post it in the New Year when I get around to it. My drafts are piling up, like about two dozen!

You look lovely in yours, so keep it up. I love the luxurious feel of lots of fabric, and it seems appropriately over the top for very minimal outfits … great, you have to admit with a moto and sweater in very cold weather!
I went out and bought gray and pink plaid fabric that I fringed to make one to go with my big pink coat … I may look like a teddy bear with a hairy red cap, but it sure feels cozy when I wear them!
I love the idea of a pink teddy bear walking around ; P
Love this!
You wore this perfectly and explained it well, and with your much appreciated sense of humour!
Love it styled with that subtle tweed maxi and leather jacket.
I do have one, but it is very fine wool, so it is not bulky, I have been wearing around town lately since it is cold.
Love your necklace that you made!

Thanks Elle : )
These blanket scarves come in handy with our winter weather. I just purchased my first one a few weeks ago and was wondering how the heck I was going to make it all fit around my neck. Thank you for clueing me in. As of right now, it’s found a cozy place by draping itself over the arm of a chair (which looks quite nice). I’m actually thinking of buying a few more for just this purpose, or folding them at the end of a guest bed, I mean what guest wouldn’t love a cozy blanket and a scarf to use while visiting, right?
I love that idea! Plus the colours of these blanket scarves are great.
I love the way you styled this scarf! I alway try to make mine look that good but fail horribly! Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for popping by Melanie : )
Cozy, and yet elegant and sensual – love your styling (and of course your ideas of winter picnics and extra blankets for guests :). You know me – I don’t wear blanket scarves, I just wear blankets. 🙂 They are warm and glam at the same time, love them! xxx
I haven’t bought a blanket scarf yet because it seems so hard to style properly – but you did such a great job here, so maybe I’ll try it. This looks fabulous on you, and it would be so warm!
That blanket scarf is definitely comfy and cozy! And I am loving that skirt! So beautiful!
