I’ve been seeing lots of monochrome looks in the magazines and at the fashion shows lately and they’ve started to grow on me.
Although it is hard for a colour and pattern obsessed freak such as myself to surrender to the idea of wearing the same colour from head to toe there are some obvious benefits;
– it makes you look taller and thinner. Nothing wrong with that in my book.
– it is easy to put together.
-it looks quite edgy, contemporary and chic.
4 Tips for mastering monochromatic style
- Mix your fabric textures. Leather, lace, wool, silk, cotton, sequins…each texture will add dimension to an otherwise flat single colour outfit.
- Mix shades of the same colour, lighter and darker versions (as I’ve shown in the grey outfit above).
- Adding subtle patterns (tone on tone) will create visual depth.
- Spotlight your favourite accessories such as statement jewellery. It’ll make the whole outfit pop.
I shopped my closet to put together some monochromatic looks for this week. The first one I’m calling Monochrome Meets Rock Star for obvious reasons.
This is a good example of mixing different textures in one outfit. Metallic, leather, faux fur and wool.
I was obsessed with metallic jeans last year. I wanted a pair so badly but every time I tried them on I didn’t look like the leggy thin chic person I’d envisioned in my head. Why is that? I spotted these metallic jeans while buying supplies for my Etsy shop and broke down and bought them. Bronze! I mean who owns metallic looking bronze jeans? The only one I knew of was this guy…
And his pants were leather… and maybe a bit more brownish and less bronze.
Close enough.
They are made out of this really weird super stretchy material and are actually quite comfortable. They do look like they have been painted on though and I’m happy that this sweater is longer in the back.
These pants aren’t for a wallflower…but clearly my flowers are on my wall…and I’m not one of them.
Look! Someone dressed like me at Milan Fashion Week.
The nerve!
Are you a fan of monochromatic style? Which outfit from the Polyvore sets did you like the best?
What about metallic pants? Yes…no…not in this lifetime.

Wow, what a gorgeous look! I love those bronze jeans. So different and cool! I don’t do a lot of monochromatic looks, but now I want to! And what a cool necklace. Heading over to your Etsy shop now!
Like the gray one best, but I know I’d have to put a scarf with it and then I suppose it wouldn’t be completely monochrome anymore. These are all nice looks though. Yes, I have two pair of metallic pants, in black and about the same color as these you have on. You look great!
I love monochromatic color patterns, especially when textures and shades are mixed. It always looks so polished. You’ve put together some great pieces. I also like to mix lengths (shorter top over longer top, etc.). It’s a great way to layer without adding bulk.
BTW, I think you look just wonderful in those bronze jeans. If you were going for leggy, you have achieved it. Brava.
Cheers, M-T
I absolutely LOVE your monochrome look. It’s just creamy dreamy!
My favorite of the look samples you put together is the grey for sure. As you probably could guess already. My color palette is pretty neutral but I’m getting better lately at choosing some patterns and color.
i pantalone bronzo sono davvero stupendi ciao cara buona serata
Wow to the bronze jeans! Gorgeous on you and on Jim M. He was born and raised till age 17 right here in Melbourne, FL. Our big claim to fame. xox
Yes to monochromatic! Your tips for making it work are totally on point … perfect. Metallic pants? Not in this lifetime. Unless I wake up with someone else’s thighs ..then I’m totally in! You look HOT!

WOW! You look super amazing in this bronze outfit! Love it all! And… you read my mind. I did not know that monochromatic is trendy, but I have been thinking of an all-purple outfit just because I have this purple sequins top that sits there without much use. So I’m working on creating one, and yes, they are especially interesting when textures are mixed, or subtle patterns as you said. Great tips, as usual, and again – you look like a star! Wait, you ARE a star! 🙂 xxx
Spot on tips and I love, love, love your bronzy number! I totally agree with playing with texture.. I think it is one of the best way to do monochromatic style. Again, I love that bronze look!
Gorgeous! I love your outfit, the bronze jeans are absolutely stunning, everything you are wearing is fab! the coat is very special too – I wouldn’t wear metallic pants, only because I don’t wear any pants! I am fond of my white, full skirt and cream jumper though, ps I love your floral wall! x x x
Yes to the monochromatic!
When monochromatic is done right – it’s so chic. I am still trying to embrace it and my pink outfit last Thursday was really an attempt to be monochromatic.
I love those pants on you! You do look like you are someone famous. I am not sure I could pull these pants off (actually, I know I can’t).

I’m a huge fan of head to toe color dressing. Terrific tips. The texture mixing keeps things interesting for me. You’ve got some terrific legs doll!! Bravo you!!
Oooh, your bronze look, yeah! I have metallic spandex pants, rather, pearlescent ones, from the ’80s, high-waisted. Too groovy by far. You seem to have thrown down the monochromatic gauntlet here. I do want sequin pants. How about monochrome in gold sequins? I can dream, can’t I?
You’ve certainly mastered it Suzanne! Using a variety of textures really makes it.
BTW I couldn’t find your necklace on Etsy.

The trousers… I don’t think I would wear them at my age (there is a limit to what I can get away with), but you wear them very well. Really you do. Enjoy these years!!! They are very good in this monochromatic look. The girl in Milan and you are trend setters, no other conclusion.
