I don't do slouchy.
I don't do baggy.
So why on earth did I buy some harem pants at Buffalo Exchange when we were in NYC?
It might have been all the 6ft tall 16 year old models that were shopping there that convinced me that a mere oompa loompa mortal could actually pull off wearing MC Hammer pants out in public.
Don't ask me why I suddenly thought my legs had grown 4 inches longer.
Maybe it was the trick circus mirrors or dim nightclub lighting in the change room.
Maybe it was the 38 C heat with a 100% humidex.
Maybe I was drunk.
Maybe I was having a midlife crisis.
Maybe I was having a hot flash.
Maybe I needed a drink.
I don't know what, but at the time I was crazy excited with these Daughter of the Liberation 100% silk beauties. They were going to make me look classy sophisticated boho is that possible?
So this is what they look like on someone tall and skinny.
And here I am
Yes they look like full length pants on me but in my defense they were also sitting very low on my hips. Now that I looked online I see that normally the waist should sit up higher. I think these might be too large on me.
I have to say that the selling points for me were;
the cool pattern of doves and flowers,
100% silk = 100% breathable and
pockets people.
Not just any pockets. Perfect pockets.
These pants felt so light next to my skin it was like wearing the lightest sheerest PJs ever.
Basically it was like walking around NYC without pants on.
I fit right in.
I picked up this sequined JCrew tank top at the same store as well as this other sequined tank by Calvin Klein in pink that also goes with the pants.
I will need to wear these pants when I'm feeling extra skinny and I don't mind having what looks like could possibly be an elephant trunk hiding in my pants or a very large wet diaper on.
What is all that crotch space for?
Shoplifting? I could fit a 20 lb turkey in these. Forget that. I could fit a complete Christmas dinner for 10 in these.
It is weird since I actually loved how I looked in these before. Even Robert kept telling me how nice the pants are. I am not used to adding weight onto my body by adding extra fabric in what could be considered my "problem areas".
This is such a huge leap away from my own personal style. Baggy = sloppy in my books.
In my mind I looked like this:
And I don't even have dementia.
I am going to try the pants again, but higher up with a skinny belt. This will give me back the waist I'm missing and will get rid of some of that extra crotch space.
The same day I bought these pieces I wore them out to dinner out at Gotham Bar and Grill and then to a live show at the Winery by the David Bromberg Band. We'd never heard of David Bromberg before but him and his bandmates were excellent.
What pushes you to try new fashion that isn't your style?
Or do you just stick to your tried and true?

I think they look fabby! Love the print. And, bonus!!, if they feel good too that has to be a good thing, no? You’ll find a way that makes you comfy with them I reckon. I’ve wanted a pair for a while too but haven’t been able to find one where I am looking. May have to look other places.
Patti @ NotDeadYet Style says
I like them, they are cool and adorable, and pockets! I hear you about the supermodels who shop there in NYC, I get a bit of a complex. You look fab.
Tamera says
suzzanne–they look fabulous on you!1 They are a great hot-weather pant–cool, breezy,-love it with teh sequined top!
It’s not like you brought gold lame’ hammertime pants!!
Vix says
You look incredible! I love those pants and they look super elegant and edgy with the sequinned vest and sassy heels. xxx

Okay, I was all prepared as I scrolled down, creeping ever so slowly towards your photo, to write a gentle comment about how MC Hammer pants are best left on MC Hammer….BUT, I like these on you!!! I think you really cool, and I love how you’ve styled them. {Still not something that I can imagine trying for myself though.} Sometimes, blogger challenges push me to try something new, otherwise, I think my style slowly evolves as I age.

I mostly stick to shapes and styles I know look best on me…and baggy, slouchy pants aren’t really my thing–If I have any curves at all they are only on the bottom half of my body–I don’t really like adding volume down below when I more obviously need it on the top half!
Alison @ Get Your Pretty On says
Holy moly, these pants are awesome! The print, the fabric, the fit. I love how you paired them up simply and let them be the star of the outfit.

This outfit looks great on you, Suzanne! LOVE the print!! I like the length. Your shoes are perfect for the pants, adds height, but probably curb-to-car type heels. I might add … you look better than the models!
I bought a similar, silky pair of pants in Harlem. Not quite harem, but looser than all my other pants, with a gorgeous black and white print. They are super comfortable and feel just like you described–like not wearing pants! In fact, that’s what i said to my husband. Even though they are not real silk, they feel like it.
Show me more! I’ll be here waiting for the rest of your NYC posts. I have hundreds more pictures of NYC, trying to sort through is daunting.
I <3 NY

I actually really like those pants on you! They may have some extra room but you look tiny in them. I can’t see much of a difference between that model shot and you. In fact I thought it was you in that first picture, until I read the caption.
Chioma says
i think you rocked those pants! maybe try them with a structured button down a belt, i love the print 🙂

Like everyone else said, these look great on you! You are skinny enough and tall enough, and you wear them with aplomb! I bet they feel great. The only suggestion I have is that you get the shoes the model is wearing in the first picture, but yours are pretty fab, too.
Anja says
I love the pattern of the pants and how they seem to feel, the way you describe that feeling. But they do appear a bit too big and baggy on you. Anxious to see how they fit with a belt and higher up.
For myself I tend to stick to what I know that suits me and my body. The whole trend of harem pants and low crutches e.g. I let happily pass me by. Unflattering in general, IMHO.
Happiness at Mid Life says
These pants are great on you! These pants looks very very comfy and the print and color that you will have so much fun pairing them.
I am not much of a risk taker when it comes to fashion. I stick to silhouettes that work for me. I just recently bought printed pants and that was a bold move for me.

Yep, I agree with everyone else, the pants are a 100% keeper. They look fantastic on you, especially how you paired them with the sequin shirt and high heel sandals. And, the pattern, that would definitely have sold me too. Although, I must add the best part of this entire post is the brilliant and witty Suzanne, always ready to entrtain and give us a laugh with her words.

i do stuff like that all the time…i return half the clothes i buy!! however, i think these are great on you. you have fantastic legs!! what if you tried pulling up and belting them? you could tuck a cute shirt into them and your legs would look miles long!!

I remember I had a pair of those in silk… with a tie at the waste in BRIGHT RED! Indeed, I was at Knotts Berry Farm one evening and dancing away thinking I was so cool in those pants. How dorky was I?! I like what you have done here though. And I think hiking them up to get rid of the dangling crotch will take them to a whole new level. xo
Suzanne says
I haven’t given up completely on them yet. They are too comfy for that.
Suzanne says
I felt like a little person shopping there. One woman must have been 6’4″. I think her legs came up to my shoulders!
Suzanne says
LOL okay okay. Although now you’ve got me thinking…gold lame’ ; )
Suzanne says
Thanks Vix. I feel I need to take a class in accessorizing from you.
Suzanne says
LOL No doubt. MC owned this look…me not so much.
Suzanne says
I like the sleek styles you choose normally. They do suit you well.
Suzanne says
Well…one vote yes anyhow ; )
Suzanne says
I know I still need to post my pics of NYC but honestly I was pretty lazy and didn’t take my camera with me except the last day we were there. Since we go quite often I’m less likely to bother taking loads of photos. I should still do a small post on it though. You took some great photos.
I can’t wait to see your pants.
Surprisingly enough those silver sandals I can walk it pretty well.
Suzanne says
Thanks Shanna ; )
Suzanne says
Okay…ha ha…you may need glasses. Just sayin’ ; )
Suzanne says
I definately think a belt will help. Thanks Chioma : )
Suzanne says
Yeah…those shoes are pretty sweet : )
Suzanne says
Agreed.
With all of the travelling you do I would think that you would be more prone to changing up your style to suit the country you are in. I guess that could be a bottomless black hole to fall into though.
I would love to see you in some of your Tango dancing outfits.
Suzanne says
It took me a while to get into the patterned pants craze too.
Suzanne says
I definately plan on pulling them up to my waist and belting them. If I see they are better like that I will take them in to fit my waist.
Suzanne says
Do you still have those pants? I love your taste in clothes.
Kristian says
I like to see experiment every now and then with their style. I like this look on you, actually and am also excited to see the pants sitting higher up to see if it give a more ankle pant feeling (if not and you want it, you could also hem them?)
I’m not sure what pushes me to try something new. I feel like my style is often still quite eclectic anyway. Sometimes it is who I am shopping with (though these purchases are almost always regrets), but usually I’ll see a picture or something that causes me to look at an item or style in a new light.

I have found, being an elfin size individual, that baggy/slouchy can go one of two ways. Either tragically wrong and you look as if you weigh approximately 300 lbs and are wearing an extra large dude’s pajama bottoms or they slouch in just the right way and you look supremely fabulous. I must say you look supremely fabulous! And that killer sequin tank doesn’t hurt either.
Debbie 🙂
