DIY Rhinestone Booties – Easy & Beautiful

November 7, 2016 by suzanne carillo

I’ve been admiring loads of awesome looking rhinestone embellished booties and boots online that were thousands of dollars and well beyond what my bank account could handle.

Instead of shelling out some big bucks I chose to DIY rhinestone booties on my own.

Initially I was looking for booties via thrift stores but didn’t have any luck. For the rhinestones to adhere properly the boots should be fabric or suede and the heels should be covered with the same material. Leather is too slick and the rhinestones may not hold.

When I came across some pretty pink booties at TJ Maxi I knew they would be perfect so I forked out the $40 and gathered my supplies.

DIY Rhinestone Booties

Supplies Required

Fabric or suede boots or booties. *NOTE* The heel must also be covered in fabric or suede
Rhinestone glue or E6000 glue
Tweezers
Rhinestones and or vintage brooches or earrings

glue rhinestones onto boot heels

I used some cheaper rhinestones and some expensive Swarovski crystals for my boots. The crystals are MUCH nicer, but very expensive. I picked up all the supplies from Michaels except for those vintage earrings which I already had in my stash.

As far as choosing colours for your embellishments I recommend using colours you wear often.  Choose some neutrals and combine them with some brighter accent colours.

I would recommend trying a few different designs with your rhinestones by laying them out as best as you can on the heels prior to using any glue.

Once I decided I was going to use two vintage earrings the rest of the design materialized organically.

I wasn’t too worried about getting each heel to match exactly. They are similar, but not exactly the same.

*WARNING*

The glue will stain the suede, so be careful when applying not to smear the glue. Go slowly and be deliberate. Make sure you don’t use too little or too much glue, I suggest trying on a bit of paper prior to working on the actual boots. The rhinestone glue I bought was great because it came out of the tube in very small droplets. If you are using E6000 glue it is stronger but quite messy to work with.

In the end I figure these DIY rhinestone booties cost me about $65 and I have one-of-a-kind boots that I love with a bit of vintage incorporated.

What do you think of the finished booties?

Of course the best view of these is from the side or the back.  I call them my “subtle, gaudy Elton John boots”.

Unique, creative vintage style for women over 40.

I wore them out the first time to a fun blogger meet-up with the wonderful, warm hearted and cute-as-a-button Sherry from Petite Over 40.

The photo below isn’t brilliant because it was taken in the dark without a flash.

Sherry looks very tiny, and she is but don’t forget I’m wearing my boots : )

Isn’t it fun how we are both wearing bows around our necks?  Total fashion fluke.

Throw Your Fashion Rules Out The Window – Fall Trends 2016

November 3, 2016 by suzanne carillo

Have you noticed something lately?

One of the BIGGEST fashion rules has been thrown out the window this year.

Fall Trends 2016

Fall trends 2016

Extra long sleeves are a big trend for fall 2016.

Remember stylists and those “in the know” telling you that your clothes should always fit?

Apparently not.

Oversized clothing and especially extra long sleeves are HUGE (ha ha! pun intended) this year.

I suppose that this trend comes along with a personal assistant for hand washing, using the bathroom, eating or basically doing anything else that requires the use of your hands or fingers. Everyone knows that the use of your hands is totally overrated. Thank heavens designers have finally worked that into their clothing.

Am I terribly old fashioned thinking that clothing should fit the body?

Maybe I’m just jealous because I cannot rock this trend without looking and feeling ridiculous, although in winter I’m sure it is a great way to keep your hands warm.

One thing I see repeatedly in fashion shows is very thin models wearing what looks like giant’s clothing. Is that fashionably dishevelled?  Or just, ” I had a banging night and am too hungover to care so I grabbed my monster boyfriend’s gigantic sleeping bag sweater.”  Cause I’ve been there but I didn’t call it a trend.

Fall trends 2016 – Velvet

This trend has been going on for years. How can they call a classic fabric like velvet a trend?

Anyhoo…I adore this trend. I may own several pairs of boots and about five or more blazers/jackets in velvet. I was ahead of the trend in acquiring my collection.

Just sayin’.

More Fall Trends 2016 – Choker Necklaces

Brilliant if you have a long skinny neck and are tall and willowy otherwise, they can visually shorten you by a couple of inches immediately.

Ruffles

Ruffles are nice if you don’t have much of a chest and are looking for some extra padding.

No one rocks a ruffled blouse better than my friend Melanie from Bag and a Beret.  Seriously…does it get any better than this? Nope…I think not.

Metallic

Metallic is hot and I’m loving it. I just picked up this gold leather blazer and added it to my Etsy store. Donna Summers made me do it. Disco is not dead!

Turtlenecks Under Dresses

Turtlenecks under dresses is not a new thing, but I like it.  When you live in a climate that can get to -20 C in winter you’re wearing turtlenecks under your PJs.  Maybe that’ll be the 2017’s trend! You read it here first folks! Wearing plain PJs is so last season. You simply must add a turtleneck! Of course, if you get night sweats you’ll need a “tear-away turtleneck”.  Someone at Zara get on that right away!

Plaid Overcoats

Plaid is always popular in Fall. Apparently, plaid overcoats are extra special this year though.

Uh huh.

I *may* have bought a long plaid blazer from Holt Renfrew at one of my local consignment stores about a month ago. I swear I did this before I knew it was a trend.

I paired it with a velvet midi dress, one of my most worn finds this season.

Dusty Pink And Yellow

Dusty pink and yellow looks wonderful on models and makes me look like I’m about to heave. I’ll be passing that trend by but have picked up some awesome dusty pink booties. I’ll be sharing the rhinestone DIY with you in the next few days.

Pantsuits.

I suppose we have Hilary Clinton to thank for bringing back this look. It can look super chic, I’m still on the fence about this trend for myself, probably just because I haven’t come across one I like yet while thrifting. I do believe it can be very elongating.

Fall Florals

Fall Florals are a huge love of mine. They have been for years.

Which of these falls trends are you wearing these days?

Maybe even more importantly, which fall trends are you willing to pass up?
