I’m Not Wearing A Costume – I Dress For Myself
I had a comment on Instagram a while back that someone thought an outfit I’d put together was a great costume idea.
I’m Not Wearing A Costume – I Dress For Myself
The first thought that ran through my head was,
“Good grief! People think I’m wearing a costume?”
Then afterwards I was just pissed because I felt attacked as a person, not simply my style.
When I choose my outfits I’m choosing to dress as myself, in a way that expresses visually who I am. An attack on my clothing choices feels like an attack on my character as a person.
This leads me to the outfits I wore for the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show, which BTW…in case you were wondering…aren’t costumes!
While I certainly take inspiration from film and TV what I wear is a direct reflection of me as a person on any given day of my life. I’m dressing to please myself so that when I look in the mirror the image I see reflects who I am. I don’t ever see a stranger dressed in a costume, I’m dressed as myself, which is maybe a bit too creative and weird for some, but just right for me.

Expressing yourself creatively through your clothing choices is an opportunity. Some view it as an opportunity to wear the latest trends or follow the advice of a celebrity or blogger.
While bloggers and celebrities are a wonderful source of inspiration, they aren’t fashion Gods.
When it comes to dressing yourself you are the master of your own domain. You need to make those choices for yourself based on what you see reflected in your mirror. You get to choose how other people see you. The impression that your clothes make is a lasting one. Like we say about food, “We eat with our eyes first and our mouths second,” I’d say the same about forming first impressions, we expose ourselves visually first and then have the opportunity to follow up verbally.
I don’t worry that some people may not understand what I’m trying to communicate to the world. They simply don’t “get” me. The most important thing is that when I look in the mirror I’m happy with myself and I know I’m putting my best self out there.
Do you ever look in the mirror and feel like you are wearing a costume, or don’t recognise the person staring back at you? What choices or circumstances made you feel that way?

Dress, Decorate Miss Fisher Style

I am often always influenced by the fashion I see while watching TV. Lately, I’ve become emersed in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. For those of you that haven’t watched this brilliant Australian series, I’d describe Miss Fisher as a female Jame Bond, only better, with a wardrobe to die for.

She lives the life all of us want, full of adventure, sex and intrigue all while looking like she stepped right off the pages of Vogue. No worries about money, she is independently wealthy.

Miss Fisher isn’t twenty something, she is a mature independent woman living her life to the absolute fullest, not a care in the world about what society thinks. A feminist that enjoys and owns her sexuality while hunting down the bad guys dressed to the nines.
A female superhero strong, sexy and intelligent.
“A woman should dress first and foremost for her own pleasure.” – Miss Fisher
My obsession with the series includes the amazing set decor. The whole series is a feast for the eyes.
I’d been searching for a velvet fainting couch for my bedroom for years. I spotted a hand carved rosy peach masterpiece in an online estate sale.
The online bidding war was beyond intense.
I honestly thought my heart might jump right out of my chest and land on the keyboard. A bidding war is terribly exciting! I prevailed and I think Miss Fisher would approve.

Soon a tapestry will cover that entire back wall (once it hurries up and gets here!) and I’m currently looking for a small area rug to complete the space, although once the tapestry goes up I may no longer require the rug.
The dress is currently for sale in my Etsy store. It is a beauty. It looks 1940’s but is actually 1980’s Joseph Ribkoff, a Canadian designer. The material is a lovely crepe. I’m wearing my altered booties. I added a bunch of rhinestones to the heels. I still need to make up a proper DIY so you can see just how smashing they turned out. They are what I call “memorable exit booties” as they leave the best impression when I’m walking away.
I’ve styled the dress classically below with some Fluevogs.
I also purchased this Phryne-esque dress and wore it out to tea last week. It is Ralph Lauren 100% silk. I need to take better photos of it once I get my tapestry on the wall.
Zoë also approves of the new couch.
Are there any series you follow that fill you with fashion and home decor inspiration?
