Thrifting Discoveries

January 27, 2016 by suzanne carillo

Has this ever happened to you?

You’re out thrifting, or shopping at your favourite consignment store and you decide to try on a fab coat or blazer.

You casually stick your hands into the pockets and discover…

SURPRISE!

a bundled up wad of well used dusty old kleenex that look like it has been there since before you were born.

Oh the joy of discovery while thrifting!

Unhappy Thrifting Discoveries

I had a surprise like this recently when I stuck my hands into a wonderful long satin Ralph Lauren robe to discover some furry grey/green pills. I am assuming the fur fungus grew over time because they were partially ingested and then spit out.  I’ve done that before. I’ve been so sick and taken some meds thinking they would help relieve my fogged-mush-brain only to suddenly realize that I had just taken two extra strength flu pills five minutes before.  Not wanting to break my liver I’d quickly spit the pills back out into the palm of my hand.  Confused, I pondered what to do with them next. They were expensive, I didn’t want to throw them out.  (Yes I’m cheap pragmatic like that.)  I couldn’t pop them back in the pill bottle, they’d stick to all the other pills. Instead, I shrugged and popped them into my robe pocket where I knew would surely remember to take them exactly fours later.

Well, that was the idea anyhow.

What else have I found while thrifting?

I’ve discovered old business cards, gum wrappers, bus tickets and elastic hair bands.

I have not discovered cash or a winning lottery ticket. {sad face}

Funny how people are careful about cleaning out the cash but totally willing to leave garbage behind, happy with the thought that they are passing a little bit of themselves along as a secret personal gift for the new owner.

I didn’t discover anything in this velvet blazer which was thrifted as the pockets were still sewn shut. Sometimes you’ve got to be thankful for the small things in life.  I must admit I always find it interesting when people don’t open the stitching for their pockets or the back vent of a blazer. Some people actually wear the blazer with the big “X” stitched on their bums.

What is the strangest thing you’ve discovered while thrifting?

I’ve got another funny story about personal space and a crushed orange velvet blazer here if you’re interested.

Do You Like Clogs?

January 25, 2016 by suzanne carillo

Sandgrens Clogs Review

My earliest memory of clogs was when I was twelve and bought my first and only pair with money I’d made working at the ice cream store my parents owned. (Yes, I consider myself a super lucky kid, learning from an early age the value of hard work in an environment that allowed me eat as much ice cream as I wanted every day. This is what dreams are made of! )

I wish I had a photo to share with you but unlike today’s kids that will have a photo marking every single banal moment of their lives, I have maybe a handful photographs of myself between the ages of 6-15.  Since none of my formative years were recorded on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram it is hard to imagine they even existed.

The clogs I bought were the same colour as the ones I’m wearing here, but without the ankle straps, with tooled leather and a higher darker wooden heel.

Pretty hip for a twelve year old, no?

I loved and wore those clogs for years.

Clogs have come back into style with the revival of everything seventies.

I will freely admit that I’d been dying to try them again. I don’t care if I’d read that clogs after forty is a big no-no. No one is going to dictate to me what I can or cannot wear.

I’d seen the Sandgrens Swedish clogs on a few other bloggers and thought they were darn cute. Yeah, I know, cute isn’t a word you’d normally associate with a woman over forty, but my entire life I’ve been called cute, a few birthdays wasn’t going to magically change my self image or what I should or shouldn’t be attracted to.

When Sandgrens offered me the opportunity to try out a pair of their classic clog sandals I already knew they were attractive, I just wanted to know if my fussy feet would like them as much as I did.

I chose the Milan Clog Sandal with a scalloped edge in a rich cognac colour that I knew would work well with most of my wardrobe.

When you think clogs you think summer, which is still around five months away so I had to get creative pairing them with some fleece lined tights.

I wore these around the house all day and they didn’t bother my feet. The scalloped edge is a bit stiff, but was beginning to soften up by the end of the day.

We don’t have much snow, but I’m not keen on wearing these outside until the snow is completely gone. I don’t want to ruin them or get salt on them. Sandgrens offers clog boots, which I never even knew existed. They even have shearling lined clog boots which would surely be better suited to my winter weather. Who knew there was an entire world of clogs out there?

I think I’m going to really enjoy these when Spring and Summer show up.

What are your feelings about clogs?

Can I offer you some candies from my husband’s chocolate covered M&M machine while you ponder that question?
