How To Dress Like A Badass Blogger Over 40

May 3, 2015 by suzanne carillo

how to dress like a badass blogger over 40

I’ve been reading more and more that the older we get the less we need to worry about what other people think of us.

Remember when you were a kid and could play “dress-up” and choose to be whomever you wanted? Those days are back!

never take dressing too seriously as you age suzanne carillo style files
Greetje, Anja, me, Sylvia…having a blast when I visited The Netherlands last year.

playing dress up over 40

Now don’t get me wrong, I didn’t go out wearing this hula skirt…but I did go out wearing this…

how to wear what you want over 40
Blazer – Altuzarra for Target (sim a Gucci for only $195!), Shirt – Parasuco via Consignment (sim), White jeans – Marshals (sim), Blue Booties – The Bay Outlet Store (these ones are INSANE!!!)

And yeah…you need to be in the mood to pull this off. Unless you are Melanie or Vix, in which case you came out of the womb wearing a feather boa and platforms. (Lucky bums!)

Badass Blogger’s outfit consists of two massive butterflies flying directly on the chesticles, a red velvet smoking jacket that was lifted from Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion (Badass claims she was there strictly for research) and those blue crushed velvet booties used to be part of “Elvis World”.

how to wear white jeans over 40

The attitude required to carry this off is part Madonna circa 1980’s and part Sue Kreitzman who said,

“here’s the truth, I am not really an old lady, just cleverly disguised as one”

Badass Blogger (BB as she likes to be called) is very closely related to my other alter ego “Rock Star” that is Kid Rock’s sister. No joke. I really look like Kid Rock here.

older stylish women over 40

Dressing like a BadAss blogger just means I’m allowing myself to play with my image. I’m not squeezed into the tight space of what’s fashionable, current, tasteful, elegant or “appropriate” for someone my age.

Lord how I despise the phrase, “age appropriate.”

Like this brilliant article put it…

“Perhaps this trend started with the best of intentions. But after having total strangers instruct me through the years to dress sexy, not slutty, in my 20s, to avoid mom-jeans in my 30s, to find a “signature look” in my 40s and to throw out my Uggs in my 50s — I am done!” – Carol Costello

When you’ve passed a certain age you’ve essentially passed Go so many times that it is up to you and you alone to decide what works for you. Hopefully it is something that allows your confidence and spirit to soar past the clouds of judgment and naysayers.

If you had one outfit to wear to best express your inner self…what would it be?

I can’t wait to read your responses to this.

How Far Do You Go To Criticize Someone?

May 1, 2015 by suzanne carillo

just how far out of your way do you go to criticize someone

I was the recipient of this brilliant comment on my blog a few weeks back…

“Your usage of “bisous” is affected on your Already Pretty comments. It just sounds silly.”  – Christine

Dear Christine,

Thanks for clearing that up for me! I’m so very delighted that you took time out of your busy day to read the comment I’d left over at Already Pretty’s blog and then came all the way over to my blog to leave a comment criticizing how I choose to sign my name.

Congratulations!

You have won the, “Just How Far Out Of Your Way Will You Go To Criticize Someone Over Something Ridiculous” award!

Wear it with pride!

What you do not know, Christine, is that I owned a business for over ten years called Bisous.  I designed, manufactured and distributed scrapbooking papers, stickers and supplies. My company sold these supplies worldwide.  For years I tediously explained to wholesale buyers and retail customers in North America how to pronounce the name of my company Bisous (bee-zoo) and also what it means, “little kisses” and why I chose it as the name of my company.

I have lived in France. My husband is from Nice. I met him while living in France.

I speak French every other day at home.

So you see Christine,  I actually do know what the word “bisous” means.

It is similar to people from North America signing XOX, XX or kisses and their name.

I know that.

I realize I’m signing my name this way and despite your complaint that it “just sounds silly” I will continue to do so for as long as it pleases me.

Thanks again for your concern Christine. I’m glad you commented in such an insightful well researched manner. If ever there is a time that you would like me to visit your blog and do the same for you just let me know. I’d be happy to help you out.

Would you make the extra effort to criticize someone over something so trivial?

Or would you believe that in fact you are doing them a favour by showing them how ridiculous they are?

In my recent hot yoga the instructor read out loud while we transitioned through poses, ⁣

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. It's a reminder of what it means to face resistance and keep moving. Like an airplane meeting headwinds, we often find our strength not in smooth skies but in turbulent ones. Headwinds build lift. They give the wings something to push against. In the same way, strength through resistance is born in those moments when everything feels uphill. It’s in these moments that quiet courage grows, even when it doesn’t feel heroic. Struggles don’t always mean we’re failing. They may mean we’re in the very place where transformation begins. The wind that pushes against you now might be the wind that teaches you how to soar. ⁣

Hot yoga and this teacher in particular has been a saviour for me. The meditative lessons on overcoming challenges in life have made me weep openly while on my mat but they have also helped loosen the trauma trapped deep inside the tissues of my body. ⁣
