Top Photo Tips For Bloggers & Monochrome Style

March 3, 2015 by suzanne carillo

Here I am in outfit #2 of how to wear monochrome over 40…or under 40…whichever. I’ve combined knit, lace and patent leather in this outfit. I should have put on blue tights. Ah well.

40+style how to wear monochrome

I also have a great blogger photography tip to share with you. Actually you don’t even need to be a blogger to use this photography tip. It is guaranteed to make you look more relaxed, happier and younger in all of your photos.

Are you ready for the phenomenal tip for taking great photos?

And no…it’s not wearing sunglasses…although that does help! And avoids the issue of having to delete every second photo where your eyes are shut.

I’ll let you in on my secret photo weapon…

How to wear monochrome over 40
Sweater – Anthropologie (similar), Skirt – Anthropologie (similar so pretty!), Shoes – Nine West (similar), Necklace – Thrifted (similar)

Stretch it out between photos. It’ll loosen you up and make you look more relaxed.

blogger secret for great photos

Look how much more relaxed I look here.

My Top Photo Tips For Bloggers

  1. Stretch out your face a bit. Make funny faces. It’ll relax your facial muscles.
  2. Put your weight on the leg furthest from the camera. You’ll look thinner.
  3. Stick your tongue to the roof of your mouth…it lifts your jawline.
  4. Cameras love angles. They are interesting to the eyes and flatter the body. Angle your body away from the camera and then turn your head and upper torso back towards it slightly.
  5. Tilt your head slightly to one side, chin down a bit and then look up towards the camera.
  6. To elongate your legs lower the camera lens to your waist level or just below it and then tilt the lens of the camera up a bit.
  7. To appear thinner in photos, take photos from above your head looking up. (Warning…this can make you look like you have tiny squat baby legs.)
  8. Upper arms laying flat against the body will look larger. Try to hold them a little bit out to your sides. It will also give you muscle tone. Putting one hand on your hip achieves this.
  9. When I take shots outside I like to walk and try to take the shot when my legs cross if possible.  Crossed legs create a lean silhouette.

Do you have any secret photo tips?

Monochromatic Style Tips – Over 40 Style

March 2, 2015 by suzanne carillo

I’ve been seeing lots of monochrome looks in the magazines and at the fashion shows lately and they’ve started to grow on me.

monochromatic

Pink Outfit –  Jacket, Dress, Shoes, Necklace
White Outfit – Jeans, Top, Necklace, Handbag, Shoes, Watch
Grey Outfit – Silver Necklace, Green Necklace, Jeans, T-shirt, Blazer, Hat, Booties
Orange Outfit – Jumpsuit, Shoes, Blazer, Necklace, Clutch

Although it is hard for a colour and pattern obsessed freak such as myself to surrender to the idea of wearing the same colour from head to toe there are some obvious benefits;

– it makes you look taller and thinner. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

– it is easy to put together.

-it looks quite edgy, contemporary and chic.

4 Tips for mastering monochromatic style

  1. Mix your fabric textures. Leather, lace, wool, silk, cotton, sequins…each texture will add dimension to an otherwise flat single colour outfit.
  2. Mix shades of the same colour, lighter and darker versions (as I’ve shown in the grey outfit above).
  3. Adding subtle patterns (tone on tone) will create visual depth.
  4. Spotlight your favourite accessories such as statement jewellery. It’ll make the whole outfit pop.

I shopped my closet to put together some monochromatic looks for this week. The first one I’m calling Monochrome Meets Rock Star for obvious reasons.

Sweater – TJ Maxx (similar on sale!), Jeans – TJ Maxx (similar on sale!), Booties – Nordstrom (similar), Necklace – handmade (check out my Etsy shop)

This is a good example of mixing different textures in one outfit. Metallic, leather, faux fur and wool.

I was obsessed with metallic jeans last year. I wanted a pair so badly but every time I tried them on I didn’t look like the leggy thin chic person I’d envisioned in my head. Why is that? I spotted these metallic jeans while buying supplies for my Etsy shop and broke down and bought them. Bronze! I mean who owns metallic looking bronze jeans? The only one I knew of was this guy…

Jim Morrison

And his pants were leather… and maybe a bit more brownish and less bronze.

Jim Morrison bronze leather pants

Close enough.

They are made out of this really weird super stretchy material and are actually quite comfortable. They do look like they have been painted on though and I’m happy that this sweater is longer in the back.

These pants aren’t for a wallflower…but clearly my flowers are on my wall…and I’m not one of them.

Look! Someone dressed like me at Milan Fashion Week.

The nerve!

Are you a fan of monochromatic style? Which outfit from the Polyvore sets did you like the best?

What about metallic pants? Yes…no…not in this lifetime.

In my recent hot yoga the instructor read out loud while we transitioned through poses, ⁣
⁣
When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. It's a reminder of what it means to face resistance and keep moving. Like an airplane meeting headwinds, we often find our strength not in smooth skies but in turbulent ones. Headwinds build lift. They give the wings something to push against. In the same way, strength through resistance is born in those moments when everything feels uphill. It’s in these moments that quiet courage grows, even when it doesn’t feel heroic. Struggles don’t always mean we’re failing. They may mean we’re in the very place where transformation begins. The wind that pushes against you now might be the wind that teaches you how to soar. ⁣
