Temptation And Thrifting

To say that I am tempted every time I thrift to keep items for myself is an understatement. It is a constant battle to ensure that pieces move into my store and not my closet. I am slowly learning to take control of my urges but it’s a battle.

“I didn’t start my store to become a hoarder.”

That is the mantra you may overhear me whispering repeatedly under my breath should you bump into me while thrifting. I need to repeat it regularly and remind myself no matter how many positively brilliant pieces I may find, and believe me, it is a goldmine out there, they are destined for someone else’s closet.

I found both of them in the same store on the same day. Funny how that happens.

Both of these skirts are very much my groove.

I’m hoping someone else will realize the potential in them.

I was fine letting both of these fab pieces slip through my hands and find a new owner.

Knowing that they won’t be heading to a landfill is rewarding.

Over 15 million tons of textile waste is produced every year in the United States, an amount that has more than doubled in the last 20 years. The average American throws away 80 pounds of clothing per person each year.

Bravo to the person that brought these two unworn pieces to the Salvation Army rather than tossing them into the garbage. The resources and energy that were used to create them will not be wasted.

Showing people the amazing items that can be purchased secondhand is my mission.

Let’s stop spending money on fast fashion and use what is already here.

There is no planet B. Small choices add up to big changes for our world.

One In Two Out Closet Reduction Rule

When I discovered this adorable 70’s corduroy pinafore dress thrifting I didn’t think it would fit me but happy surprise…it does!

It’s a shame I didn’t get any photos of the groovy button-up back closure. They don’t make them like this anymore!

The temptation I face when shopping for my Etsy shop is overwhelming. It is extra difficult when the item is one-of-a-kind vintage. It is much easier when the item doesn’t fit me.

To curb my desire to add to my personal collection I have decided on a one in two out closet reduction rule.

I must be willing to part with two other pieces from my closet to keep the new-to-me treasure. This rule really makes me contemplate my new addition.

To ensure I was making a well-informed decision I asked myself these questions:

Does it work with other items in my closet?
Does it fit my body and make me feel good about myself?
Is it comfortable?
Can it be laundered easily?
Does it communicate my personal style statement?
Does it make me feel happy?
Is it eco-friendly? AKA secondhand?

What is a personal style statement?

A style statement is an opportunity to “dress for the job you don’t have” or dress for the person you want to be. Clothes communicate volumes about ourselves and influence the way we see ourselves. Attitude and mindset follow the lead of the clothes you are wearing. Actors will “get into character” through their wardrobe. Our clothing can shift the perception of ourselves. Our chosen second skin is an opportunity to make positive changes. Giving yourself permission to dress as the person you aspire to be is the beginning of the change you want to see in yourself.

This dress made the cut.

I’m full on retro hipster geek and loving it. I said goodbye to two other dresses to make space in my wardrobe. I knew it was the right choice when I had no regrets about letting go of the other two dresses.

The rule isn’t too difficult to follow because I have a large wardrobe. I imagine it will get harder when I whittle down my wardrobe.

The little round bag I picked up ages ago is one of my favourites. It is the perfect size so it doesn’t aggravate my Fibromyalgia and has an external phone pocket for easy access.
