Tips To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Tips To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Petite women are often advised to wear shorter skirts to elongate their legs and create visual height.
I followed this rule up until about four years ago. Short skirts didn’t align with my personal style sense anymore and I found them awkward to wear. I was always pulling and adjusting, worried about a wardrobe malfunction or flashing bits I’d rather keep private. I still wear them sometimes, mostly with tights but I much prefer midis and maxis which I find feminine, easy to wear and oh yeah … elongating surprisingly enough!
Wearing a midi skirt with a shorter jacket like I did below is an easy way to visually gain a few inches however it’s not the only way.
Wearing long over long can add visual height by creating one tall lean line.
Let me show you what I mean…

I started out by matching my boots to my skirt colour which I mentioned in my last post. If you’re wearing a maxi skirt you don’t really need to worry about that as most people won’t even see your footwear.
Tip #1 To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Wear boots to match your skirt or pants.
I layered up with a long jacket.
And yeah, okay…the heels are a big part of this look. It would look quite schlumpy if I’d worn flats.
Tip #2 To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Wear heels.
Yeah I know…it’s not rocket science people.
Did you notice another elongating trick?
Keeping all your tones the same. Textures change but the colour tones are all closely related.
Tip #3 To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Keep your colour tones similar.
Tip #4 To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Wear something high waisted.
Creating the illusion of longer legs is always good.
What’s that saying? You can never be too rich or have legs that are too long. Something like that.
Tip #5 To Dress Tall When Wearing Long Over Long
Make sure your clothes fit your body correctly.
Oversized ill fitting clothes will make you look shorter than you are.
Since I was trying to figure out how to make this look cold weather friendly I continued layering up.
I added another furry layer.
I topped off the outfit with the vintage coat below without the belt.
Belting becomes uncomfortable with so many layers.
I also chose a different scarf that wasn’t so bulky under the coat.
When it’s -20 C outside I don’t mess around.
Mostly though I try not to leave the house. #truestory #welcometowinter #wintersucks
Here are a few other examples pairing long over long.
I’m dubbing my most recent look “Out of Africa”.
If ever there was a film to inspire elegant timeless layered dressing that was it.

How do you style a vintage midi skirt with Gucci Flair?
Easy!
Style A Vintage Midi Skirt With Gucci Flair
What’s Gucci style about this outfit?
The clashing scarf with the vibrant vintage blouse. I could have added a beret and funky glasses to punch it up even more.
When I rescue fantastic secondhand vintage pieces like these and give them a second life it makes me so deliriously happy I’m known to randomly break out in song.
Thank heavens there is no one here to judge me other than the pug.
I think she may be tone deaf so we get along just fine.
As a petite person, what trick am I using to avoid looking like a munchkin in this midi skirt?
If you guessed a high waist and matching the boot colour to my skirt to visually elongate my body you win! (Your cheque is in the mail.)
I’m only 5’4″ and a bit but I figure that little trick adds on at least two inches.
The day I wore this to the AGO I bundled up adding a dark blue vintage leather coat, a wool beret and patterned scarf.
The weather has taken an icy dip since these photos and it is hard to maintain any fragment of style when you are shivering uncontrollably, knee deep in snow, slush and salt with a windchill of -20 C.
Winter only recently arrived but I’m already WAY over it.
We went to see the Guillermo del Toro Living With Monsters exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. It was fabulous!
Can you imagine having a house that looks like this?
I don’t think I’d be so keen if it were just me and the pug at night though. Plus I can’t imagine the team of maids required to keep it all clean.
Here are a few more photos I took while enjoying the exhibit.
Guillermo del Toro explained his penchant for moving the eyes on his monsters and putting them in unexpected places is meant to unnerve us. The eyes are considered the window to the soul and when displaced the creatures appear soulless. We can no longer judge their intent.

The creatures that arise from del Toro’s imagination are cunning, intricate and terrifying.

The costumes from Crimson Peak took my breath away.
I read that the undergarments required to keep the shape of the dresses were numerous, heavy and terribly uncomfortable often restricting the movement of the actress wearing them.

The massive Frankenstein head that hangs in the foyer at Bleak House del Toro’s home in California.

Here I am in the comic book room, one of the many sources of inspiration for Guillermo.
My vibrant blouse matches the bright comic book illustrations.
I always find learning about artists, no matter their chosen media profoundly inspirational.
Feeding our creative impulses keeps our imaginations and minds vibrant.
What feeds your creativity?
P.S. I loved this outfit so much that I used the same clothing equation to create several other outfits that I’ll be featuring soon.
Wishing you happiness and love in the New Year.
