Not long after I decided to switch my blog from scrapbooking to style I had a very kind soul leave the concerned comment,
“You’re way too old to wear that.”
“That” being a cardigan with a poodle print on it.
I immediately ran to my closet and grabbed the offending cardigan to see if there was an age limit indicated somewhere on the tag that I’d missed.
Nope.
How was I to know this cardigan was too young for me?
What was the age cutoff?
How did this person decide I was too old?
I hadn’t even stated my age on the post.
What makes their opinion more valuable than my own?
This was the first time I’d encountered someone else telling me how I should dress because of my age.
Online there are plenty of bloggers and websites that supply lists of what not to wear after a certain age. I’m not really sure what credentials entitle them to be the King/Queen of Age Appropriate Fashion on the internet.
Personally I believe people should wear whatever they want no matter their age.
Age is irrelevant when it comes to personal style.
I hate it when someone judges someone else for , “trying to look young”. It is a very antiquated perspective.
Personal style is simply about dressing in a way that best expresses who we are as people on the inside, not how old we are on the outside.
I’m grateful that this silliness doesn’t bother Cher when she gets dressed.
Do you worry about dressing age appropriately? If so, why?
