So I saw this amazing hat and decided to create my own DIY floral hat that wouldn’t cost me $940. (that is not a typo)

DIY Floral Hat
Materials Required
Hat – H&M (I wanted to get one thrifting but didn’t have any luck)
Silk Flowers (they often have 40% off silk flowers at Michaels on the weekends)
Fabric or Ribbon ( I preferred the fabric )
Felt that matches the colour of your hat cut to a 1/2 circle about 3″ wide.
Thread that matches ribbon or fabric & Needle
Glue Gun
Insect brooch or charm (if you like)
Step 1
Decide if you are using ribbon or fabric for the hat band. Instructions for creating a hat band without sewing. Or sew one like my friend Sue did here. She is a brilliant sewer!
I glued the ribbon directly on the hat and I didn’t like how it turned out (see photo below). I wouldn’t recommend this. Instead, measure it, and cut it 1″ larger. Glue it together so it fits snugly over top of the old band on the hat, but don’t glue it to the hat. It can be tacked into place onto the hat with a needle and thread later by hand.
Step 2
Glue or sew the piece of felt onto the ribbon or fabric. This is where you will be glueing your flowers. I didn’t glue anything onto the hat itself.
Step 3
Glue on flowers. Make sure the felt is no longer visible by tucking bits of flowers in all the crevices.
Step 4
Pin or sew on the brooch or charm. At this time if you choose you can tack the ribbon into place on the hat with the needle and thread.
Tips
When buying the silk flowers they often come bunched together in coordinating colours which will save you time and money.
I didn’t attach the hat band on the second hat I made so I can switch it out or remove it if I want to.
I really love how these turned out.
I want to make about 10 more of them now.
This would be a fun craft to make as a take away gift from a party. I could see it working especially well for a tea party like the one my friend Trina put on.
