So I saw this amazing hat and decided to create my own DIY floral hat that wouldn’t cost me $940. (that is not a typo)
DIY Floral Hat
Materials Required
Hat – H&M (I wanted to get one thrifting but didn’t have any luck)
Silk Flowers (they often have 40% off silk flowers at Michaels on the weekends)
Fabric or Ribbon ( I preferred the fabric )
Felt that matches the colour of your hat cut to a 1/2 circle about 3″ wide.
Thread that matches ribbon or fabric & Needle
Glue Gun
Insect brooch or charm (if you like)
Step 1
Decide if you are using ribbon or fabric for the hat band. Instructions for creating a hat band without sewing. Or sew one like my friend Sue did here. She is a brilliant sewer!
I glued the ribbon directly on the hat and I didn’t like how it turned out (see photo below). I wouldn’t recommend this. Instead, measure it, and cut it 1″ larger. Glue it together so it fits snugly over top of the old band on the hat, but don’t glue it to the hat. It can be tacked into place onto the hat with a needle and thread later by hand.
Step 2
Glue or sew the piece of felt onto the ribbon or fabric. This is where you will be glueing your flowers. I didn’t glue anything onto the hat itself.
Step 3
Glue on flowers. Make sure the felt is no longer visible by tucking bits of flowers in all the crevices.
Step 4
Pin or sew on the brooch or charm. At this time if you choose you can tack the ribbon into place on the hat with the needle and thread.
Tips
When buying the silk flowers they often come bunched together in coordinating colours which will save you time and money.
I didn’t attach the hat band on the second hat I made so I can switch it out or remove it if I want to.
I really love how these turned out.
I want to make about 10 more of them now.
This would be a fun craft to make as a take away gift from a party. I could see it working especially well for a tea party like the one my friend Trina put on.

Bravo! Very pretty hats. You did an excellent job. I can’t believe the first one was $940!!! Good grief, who would pay that, for that hat. It’s nice, but not that nice. I adore hats, but I confess I don’t wear straw ones, I prefer fabric ones.
I know! LOL when I saw the price I just about fell off my chair. LOL
Yikes, $940 for a hat? I’m clearly in the wrong business. The ones you made are just as lovely!
I was thinking I need to sell some in my Etsy shop. I’d be lucky if people would pay $50!
Srsly! I just need to sell one hat a month and I’m golden. Your versions are beautiful. xox
I know! You and me both ; P
Gorgeous!!!, you’ve made a very cool hat, and I think it looks way more funky than model!, love particularly your magenta flowers hat, such a pretty piece!. And also love those summery ensembles you’ve created, they look so fresh!!!
besos
I can see why you like the magenta…you were wearing full on magenta the other day : )
You are the flower queen! Gorgeous luscious floral work. Fit for a garden party or two. Xo Jazzy Jack
I’m thinking I need to have a high tea in the garden now : )
I love this! And $940 for that hat? No thank you. Yours is just as pretty and, I am sure, at least $900 less!
LOL…about that ; )
Who on earth pays that kind of money for a hat??? I like the ones that you’ve made and I can really see this as a party favor at Trina’s parties. Please make sure I am invited 🙂

Hope to see you Thursday for TBT Fashion link up.
I’ll tell you who pays that kind of money for a hat! The Queen of England! LOL Well… her Royal Subjects pay for her.
We need to start bugging Trina to get on that right away : )
Ooooooh…I am so all over this DIY Suzanne! Thank you for sharing! The tip about gluing everything to the felt, which is glued to the band is excellent! {Thanks bunches for the linky by the way, xoxo} The large flowers make this so very haute couture. I love both your hats, but I have a special fondness for dragonflies…they remind me of a much loved kitty…so it’s the purple and pink one that’s my favourite!
I like the idea of having one hat, with many bands. I’ve kind of gotten obsessed with making them now. They are one of those crafts that are quick and delightfully satisfying. I like a craft that I can wear. Now I’m going to be collecting bug pins.
You are clever! that hat looks fab. Why on earth would anyone spend that much on a hat? Its insane! x
Like I wrote… the Queen would be the only one I can think of willing to spend that kind of $ on a hat.
Your hat looks fantastic, and at a fraction of the frankly mad cost of the original inspiration! What a good idea. xxx
BRILLIANT DIY!!!!!! Your hats are fantastic Suzanne, they are so pretty!!!! I MUST do something like this- I’ve got a wedding coming up and I want to customise a hat but I’m scared of the glue gun- bought it, not ever used it!
900$ plus would have surprised me until I was searching for a hat the other day and saw one for £1020!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! x
Oh! I must see the link to that hat! Send it will you? I have to see what is so amazing!
You would have so much fun doing this.
No worries about the glue gun. They are your crafty “friend”! LOL you can even get ones that have a lower setting so you don’t worry about burning yourself. Just remember not to touch the glue until it has dried.
Love the DIY! The results looks very 940 dollars worth!
I also love all three outfits you created with this hat as the perfect accent.
I would wear each and every one and sometimes wish i had you to dress me in the morning!
Although Once I am caffeinated I tend to hold my own..
Siper post!

Your hats are amazing! Another thing you can sell in your etsy shop if you wanted to. They would go fast, I bet! I did something similar… only simpler… I just put a flower head bend over my hat – it looks lovely too, and is removable just like you said. But yours are so much more whimsical, and I love them! xxx
Oh they are beautiful. Just as nice as the $ 940 one (ridiculous price. I would only pay such prices if I could get a hat like Judith’s, although I fear they might be even more expensive). Such a shame hats and I don’t go together. It often makes an outfit so much better. I like your outfit examples too. You are a good stylist.

Your creativity always amazes me, and your DIY hat is just another example of your artistic flair. Your trims bring so much life to each of your hats in the above photos. Thank you for sharing with Hat Attack!
Cool project, dear, and pretty results!
