My girlfriend and I went out to a Lindy Hop dance about 10 days ago.
We had 2 lessons beforehand…a Charleston and a Swing.
I found the Charleston quite difficult, the basic step has a hesitation in it which is kind of strange. The Swing I'd taken before so I didn't feel quite so inept.
It was so much fun but it was like an oven. It is in an old building, looks like an old school or rec center without any air conditioning. Since Toronto is known for humid hot weather in the summer it was like dancing in a sauna. Lots of the guys brought a second shirt to change into, but they could have changed 10 times that night and still looked like they'd just stepped out of the shower. A great way to loose weight!
I literally had to go and stand outside for 15 minutes before the 1st lesson was done because I was dripping. Not super attractive when you are changing partners every 2 minutes.
After the lessons they had a live band and Lindy Hop dance.
Some of the dancers were dressed up.
The band was excellent. The theme for the evening was Gilligan's Island…thus the weird outfit.
One of the things I loved about the dance was the variety of people and ages.
In Lindy Hop it seems anything goes. There was tons of freestylin' and people going so crazy and wild that you really needed to watch on the dance floor that you didn't get hit.
Here is Hazel getting her groove on.
Needless to say I am now looking for Lindy Hop lessons out by where I live.
