Western Trend Inspiration With Layered Denim Dress
I’m sure you’ve all read about the latest revival of the western wear trend. As a gal that grew up partially in Alberta this so-called trend has been part of my life for a very long time and is nothing new.
I’ve owned these cowboy boots for over 29 years having purchased them (if-you-can-believe-it) in Paris of all places.
I wore them non-stop while living and travelling in Europe, especially in Montpellier when I was studying in France. They were so well worn that I had to have them resoled.
I know it is very weird that I had to go to Paris to buy cowboy boots when they were everywhere in Alberta. That was in the late 80’s.
Proof that what ever goes around comes back around and classics never go out of style.
I have quite a few great cowboy boots for sale in the shop right now like these that are very similar to mine or these which are black and cream. There are some less authentic more fashion forward ones like these grey ones too.
I consider a denim dress a timeless piece as well.
The vision in my head of layering this piece was radically different from how it turned out. Isn’t that the way it always goes?

The cool thing about a button front denim dress is that it can double as a light coat.
Of course in Canada this weight of coat is perfect for about two weeks out of every year but in more moderate climates it would be ideal.
I decided in the end that I preferred the dress on its own.
I can just add a turtleneck sweater and some tights for winter.
Here are a few other western inspired looks I’ve worn in the past.

How do you feel about the revival of western wear?
Which of my western inspired outfits do you prefer?

I haven’t embraced the western trend, but you make it look so *effortless*!
I think it’s because I’m naturally drawn to it because of my background. Thanks for popping by Kim!
The area I now live in, the Black Hills, is considered the gateway to the American west…. In the years before we moved from Minnesota I collected a lot of western genre clothing in preparation for the move (?) and of course, cowboy boots. Most of the really cool stuff was thrifted of course! 🙂
Your stylings here are uniquely representative of a broad range of western looks Suzanne. I’m not a bit surprised, because your tastes are always a nice mix of the eclectic and unpredictable. I love that about you!
I actually like your Paris boots best. You can’t beat those silver toe caps! They’re a rare embellishment in mainstream cowboy boots!
I strive for unpredictable and eclectic! So I’m happy to learn I’m succeeding : )
I can totally see you wearing western pieces with flare Jude. Are you a fan of turquoise? I’m sure they have some beautiful pieces out your way.
love your sophisticated western looks!!
i like the style – but take only a little bit of it for my own styling – to typical “texas” looks wrong in my environment….
heydoo! xxxx
Funny enough I watched a program about people in Germany dressing up like Native American Indians and western folk. Apparently they have a whole village based around it! And no one thinks it is at all racially insensitive.
here we have many “western towns” – most started as a hobby of few – some made it into adventure parks. esp. in eastern germany the hobby “Native American Indians” was taken very serious and educative. even some native americans came over to honor the efforts!
xxxx
Western style was feted as the big thing in women’s fashion last Autumn here but I don’t think I saw much evidence of it out and about other than the ubiquitous checked shirts.
I do love a vintage suede jacket – I’d love to find one with fringing in my size – I keep having to sell the ones I come across! Cowboy boots and authentic men’s vintage cowboy shirts always sell well here – especially to the festival crowd. Obviously we don’t have a cowboy culture here although there used to be a chap in Walsall who dressed in a ten gallon hat, cowboy boots and a crazy suit and changed his name by deed poll to JR Ewing.
I love that you’ve still got your 1980s cowboy boots. Your looks are great. That wild dress with the rose print and Lurex trim is – as the cool kids say – epic! xxx
That guy sounds like a hoot! Ha! I guess JR lives?
I love that fringed skirt you found BTW.
Western style suits you perfectly, with your gorgeous red hair and confident personality! The denim dress is such a classic, I’d wear it three times a week. And the Paris Western boots! Can I get an amen, those are works of art. xoxo
I thought you’d like this dress Patti. If I find another one I’ll keep it for your birthday present ; P
It’s the same here in Denver….western wear was the clothing of choice. It’s changed somewhat, but I not only have my cowboy boots, but I have my dad’s too!!
I have one of those denim dresses, and I’ve only worn it as a duster. For some reason, I never think of it as a dress. But I may try that with the turtleneck and tights….why not??
XOXO

I think that is interesting that you’ve only worn your dress as a duster. Ha! Is that some kind of blogger brainwashing I wonder? Always having to reinvent ourselves and our clothes?
Your stash of boots and leather coats is enviable, Suzanne. These photos show why. Your cowboy boots are amazing, and too funny that you got them in France. The Canadian tuxedo, or formal blue tie, will never go out of style here. And I think that denim blue blood runs in our veins.
When I was in uni, for a very special treat, I spent a whole day looking for new cowboy boots, nothing!, so sad, but before I went home I slipped into Value Village and there they were. They fell apart about 10 years ago. I’m ready for a new old pair.
You must have really worn those boots. I find it hard to imagine you wearing cowboy boots for some reason. I hope you find a secondhand pair so I can see how you’d style them.
This is a style that really suits you, Suzanne, taking some western inspired elements and assembling them into your own inimitable style! I have to think long and hard, but can only come up with one blouse with a western vibe in my wardrobe. I’d love a good denim dress, but so far my search has been fruitless. Can’t get over the fact that you’ve had those boots since the late 1980s. If I have to choose one favourite, it would be the one with the golden pussy bow blouse and green hat, which I’d wear in a heartbeat! xxx
I could totally see you wearing that outfit Ann : )
Yes, I’ll keep those boots till I die I think. Too many wonderful memories associated with them. When I put them on I feel like I’m 20 again. {sigh} If only it were as easy as slipping on a pair of boots.
Can we just take a moment to pause in honor of those fabulous boots you bought in Paris??? ::happy sigh:: All your other Western looks are fabulous as well–love that denim dress!–but those boots. Mm, Mm, Mm. They are GLORIOUS.
I haven’t quite jumped on the Western bandwagon for a variety of reasons, though if I had those boots (yes–I’m still on that), I wouldn’t wear anything else. Okay. Maybe I would wear other things WITH the boots but…. I’ll stop talking about the boots now.

For me those boots represent many years of travelling and being free and young. I do believe there might have been times when I did as you suggested you might do…wore them without anything else. But that’s a long story for another day and another blog ; P
Suzanne,
Fabulous western boots. It makes sense that you purchased these in Paris. It is true, what goes around comes around. I also have a pair of western boots but they are five years old! I am loving all of these outfits with the denin, I am crushing on that beautiful poncho that has sold out. You also wear a corset belt very beautifully.
Oh this week.. I did vote today.. fingers crossed!

Glad you got out and had your voice heard. It is so important.
Western style works for you. It points to your physical strength and resourcefulness. Plus, you look good in cowboy hats and cowgirl boots. And know how to tame a male animal. 🙂
Ha ha! Well taming male animals is always a bit of a “work in progress”.
Ooooh Suzanne, much as I love you, it’s agony to see these full spreads of endless temptation! The paisley boots had me drooling from the outset and then the patchwork ones, then skirts, dresses and on and on – what are you doing to me? I think maybe you ought to issue a temptation warning at the start of these kind of posts so that we can gather our strength together before we begin.
When I was at college I fell in love with a baby blue pair of leather cowboy boots, which being a student I couldn’t afford. I’ve never gotten over them and still hanker after them to this very day. Do drop me a line when they turn up in your store sweetie!

It doesn’t surprise me that you like some of the pieces I’m wearing here Anna, we have very similar tastes.
When I was in grade 10, so 14 years old, I had a stunning pair of baby blue suede cowboy boots with long fringe around the top. They were the most expensive piece of clothing I’d bought at that time. Oh how I miss those boots! I don’t even have any photos of them : (
woww, you rock this western trend, from the classic XIX century vibe to the modern denim, you look gorgeous in every outfit!. And I love every pair of boots you wear!, fabulousness!
besos
That is quite a collection of outfits you got there. The boots are awesome. I have knee high red cowboy boots (by Sendra I think). I wished they were the height of yours. I just cannot style these darned long things. I will try again this winter with a wide long black skirt. (Not much fantasy but that is me.)
The denim dress with that double buckly belt is terrific. Both the dress and the belt. A winner in my book.

sorry… buckly should read buckle
sorry buckly should read buckle.
I’ve never embraced the Western look, although I did have a pair of black suede cowboy boots when I was in my 30’s. The style really suits you, especially the colours in the outfits you’ve shown here. The denim dress with the double buckles looks great on you!
Those are a lot of great looks that you created! Really cool!
