Festive Holiday Maxi Skirt Style
I’m delighted with this vintage maxi skirt find. The metallic gold rickrack and rosebud trim make it extra special.

I’ve gone a bit western on my styling here. I blame West World, which if you aren’t watching yet…you need to get on it STAT. My whole universe shifted slightly after reflecting on this series and its perspective on the human condition. Speaking of which, have you watched Black Mirror on Netflix this season? I think it is the best season yet. Almost every episode was eerily close to our current reality. All you Instagramers be sure to watch Nosedive, the first episode where popularity becomes a greater commodity than cash. Sound familiar?
Holiday Outfit Ideas
Do you want to feel like a princess this holiday season?
Who doesn’t?
I don’t care what age you are.
Have you considered changing things up a bit by wearing a maxi skirt instead of your go-to traditional little black dress?
It’s a great alternative.
Yes, maxi skirts are dramatic and luxurious. Especially when they are full and look like they were created with the wave of a Fairy’s magic wand.
The Pros Of Wearing A Maxi Skirt
- They are comfortable, you won’t need to pass up that second helping of dessert. Live a little! Christmas is only here once a year. (Thankfully!)
- You can layer tights underneath if it is frigid outside. No one knows what is going on underneath all that fabric. You could be riding a unicycle for all they know.
- No need to shave your legs. At a time of the year when every second counts this is HUGE.
- Wear comfortable footwear. No need to kill yourself in skyscraper high heels, going with a mid heel or kitten heel is fine. Comfort = Happiness.
- As they are only the bottom half of an outfit the creative possibilities for multiple ensembles are endless.
- They leave a lasting impression.
The Cons Of Wearing A Maxi Skirt
- They can be difficult to manoeuvre in the bathroom, especially if they are extra full.
- Take caution when going up or down stairs as you can sometimes step on the skirt.
- You can accidentally step on the skirt when trying to stand up from sitting.
- Someone else or yourself may accidentally step on the dress when dancing.
- Floor length maxi skirts can get dirty in the snow or rain.
I tend to wear my maxi skirts a little bit shorter to avoid some of these issues. So far, touch wood, I’ve avoided any major face plants or wardrobe malfunctions.
And finally two other outfit possibilities for the holidays with my “new to me” vintage maxi skirt…
The reality is that I could have styled this maxi skirt a million different ways. It is a blank canvas waiting for inspiration and imagination.
Here are a few other choice maxi skirts I’d love to own.
I’m all over that black tulle maxi skirt…
Have you ever worn a maxi skirt for the holidays?
Would you do so again?
Linking up with Visible Monday, I Will Wear What I Like, Shoe and Tell, Turning Heads Tuesdays, My Whims Wednesday, What I Wore, Fun Fashion Fridays, Hat Attack
Although I love your maxi collection and especially the way YOU style and look in them I just don’t have these kinds of holiday occasions. (SADLY)
I guess I really only wear maxis in the summer time… Perhaps I need to reassess and remedy that!
Heck Marilee! Create an evening when it is just you and the husband dressed up to celebrate! I’ve done that before.

Yes, it was just for us : )
You are the coolest!!!!
Love these long skirts, and I must confess – not having to shave legs is a huge bonus. You look splendid and your styling is impeccable! xo

It’s not fair! We only have Freeview, we can’t get these shoes unless we pay for a subscription or illegally download it.
That’s a glorious skirt, it looks fabulous on you with that pretty blouse. The only Westworld I know is that film with Yul Brynner, He was a hottie but I’m not sure i remember his outfit – only that face!

I will admit that I do not subscribe to any cable other than Netflix. Read into that what you will ; )
My multi coloured maxi skirt was a great success last Christmas, so I’d certainly go that way again. I’m always a bit guarded about what my festive outfits will be mainly because I wear what I fancy at the time. Planning a special outfit can leave me feel a bit pressured so I like to have a few choices.
I love this black maxi with braiding. It’s perfectly versatile as you say, a real blank canvas. The red satin blouse looks so rich and utterly festive. Why do I think that you too may have many options lined up for the holiday season?

Ha ha! One can never have too many options ; )
I remember that maxi skirt. Gorgeous!
I love maxi skirts! You have some fabulous ones.
I had a very similar black maxi skirt with that lovely A line shape; if only I’d thought to decorate it with rick rack braid! It’s too late now, alas, it’s gone to the charity shop…
Have a great week

Oh what a shame. Maybe you’ll come across another one in your thrifting adventures.
I love this skirt! So fashionable. I’ve been wanting to see those two shows but I don’t have Netflix streaming, just Netflix DVD, and they aren’t available yet.
You will love them when you get them : )
So beautiful and elegant. I wish I had somewhere to wear an outfit like that!
Wear it out for date night with hubby! : )
Oh my. With all of your suggestions to make myself some Anthro worthy DIY plus your Netfix suggestions, I may not leave the house for months. As always you are lovelier than ever.
I see my plan worked ; ) Although I’m sure if I lived in SoCal I’d want to be outside every day.
Suzanne,
That skirt is absolutely a stunner! Paired perfidy with that nicely detailed red blouse and a dash of sass! I love Maxis, but seldom wear them. I think I am worried about the tripping over shoes issue, since my bones are so frail.
But this looks fabulous and I also love and silver and Olive maxi skirts!
A bit western , which is not a style i love, but this looks amazing!

also loved your comment on Nancy’s blog…
Yes the tripping is a real hazard. Especially if you are worried about breaking something. The other day I was out wearing runners walking the pug and almost twisted my heel! One has to be careful all the time, no matter what you’re wearing.
ohhh, I love your advice on maxi skirts, and lovely selection of fabulous garments! And your versión of western-style is really cool and elegant!
I’m a huge fan of maxi skirts, even if very conscious about their cons (stairs are evil!!). I found them tricky to manage on my shape, but I feel encouraged to find fitted flattering tops, and to make the most of not-rainy days and wear my favorite maxis!
Obviously, the possibility of riding an unycicle is always a Pro!, mwahaha
besos
Never underestimate the joys of riding a unicycle under your maxi skirt ; ) Plus imagine how much faster you can get around!
Well, I’m going to now that I just received my new olive green one, thanks to you!! That is unless it’s snowing because of that getting dirty thing you mentioned!! But I’m happy to report that if fits me great and it’s just so gorgeous!!
And how I love your new one too…..isn’t that a DIY project just waiting to happen on another plain skirt. You could seriously, easily add a little bric brac to the bottom portion?
You find the most amazing pieces, Suzanne!!

I’m so happy the skirt got to you and it fits : ) It is a beauty.
Shame about the weather though. I guess I’ll have to wait patiently to see how you chose to style it.
You are looking particularly sultry in these shots…you little vixen, you! I absolutely love the silver/gray maxi; it’s gorgeous. And I always have a unicycle under my maxi skirts…doesn’t everyone?

Hahahaha! You always make me laugh lady : )
That black skirt with the ric rac trim is wonderful, Suzanne. Looks great on you. I can’t really do maxi skirts. Or any skirt with something tucked in. Unless I maybe had a long jacket like in one of your shots. Hmmmm:)
Funny enough I didn’t care for long jackets before and now I adore them.
Elegant, rich, swishing, festive…a gorgeous parade of skirts, Suzanne. xx
I love rick rack trim. And combined with those little rose appliques, I can barely stand it. No wonder you are hoarding that for yourself!!!
And the Temperley London maxi you linked to is amazing. Wish I hit the lottery so I could buy it 🙂
I’ve been watching Westworld and Black Mirror too. Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris, how can you go wrong? And those stories on BM remind me of a scarier version of Twilight Zone. Very disturbing, yet so entertaining!
Yes, I definitely need to get a maxi skirt into my wardrobe ASAP! I love all of your styling suggestions here; so classy.
