Don’t let these photos fool you, I’ve had a rough week.
These photos were taken last week.
My health hasn’t been cooperating with me lately.
I’m hoping this week was just a glitch in the Matrix and all will be better and brighter next week : ) Fingers crossed.
These white jeans are providing a blank canvas for anything.
In the past I would have said, “Never wear white on the bottom and black on top, it’ll make you look like a Weeble.”
If you know what a Weeble is then you know that they wobble, but they don’t fall down, which is a plus, especially as I get older and don’t want to fall and break a hip, but they aren’t exactly svelte and not a body type I would aspire to.
White normally makes you look larger and black will make you look smaller.
Thus, this outfit might be how you could create a pear shaped body, for those of you that always wanted one.
And I see that is…
ummm…
no one.
Okay then.
I think I avoid the pear look here by wearing heels, having biggish boobs (which can often make me look like a Weeble if I’m not careful) and the floral pattern on the top breaking up the black.
In the past I would have avoided this look because it does add visual weight to my frame.
I’ve been getting into some more relaxed outfits lately that don’t always show my waist.
Is this due to confidence I’ve gained by getting older?
Ha!
NOT.
Or realizing no one is really looking at me so I can kind of wear whatever I like.
Maybe.
In the past when I saw older women sporting this look, oversized tunic, very large shapeless tops, I always assumed that they were hiding a big secret under that flowy top and it wasn’t an ice cold, rock hard, six pack if you-know-what-I-mean.
I’ve been called pregnant before in my life when I wasn’t and that I think impacted my psyche forever. Here is a bit of golden advice…never ever assume someone is pregnant. Trust me on this.
I’ve also been called,
“That short fat gal that helped me yesterday”
by a what seemed like a nice little old lady. The irony was that I was the one she was telling this to. You see, I was the one that had helped her the day before. Since I’m no timid wallflower-type I told her outright,
“I’m the short fat one that helped you yesterday.”
Then she proceeded to tell me I wasn’t. Ah it was a stellar day as the hotel concierge as I recall. Memories…
This tunic spotted at Marshals was an impulse buy. I hate when I get sucked into that store. There aren’t any really good thrifting stores near my house but this store is only three minutes away and tempts me far too often I’m ashamed to say.
I took these photos when I was trying to decide if I would keep the tunic or not. Do you ever do that? I often do because sometimes my mirror is a big fat liar!
That is the reason I have had a massive blogger fail in the above photo and tag is still attached.
No worries! I have since removed it.
I’m cheap but I don’t go around advertising it.
At my age that would just be considered gauche and not elegant at all as I’ve been told in the past.
I leave you with this…because it is from one of my favourite movies, but in all honesty, you don’t need a reason to listen to this.

I do hope you feel better by next week. As for this outfit, I love it and never would’ve thought of wearing white on the bottom as making you look heavier. It’s funny, I have notice that I rarely wear white tops because I don’t like the color near my face.
I rarely go to stores like Marshalls because it overwhelms me and I always end up empty handed. This is a great top that you picked out.
Thank you for joining TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you next week. Have a great weekend

I’m like you, I really dislike white next to my face. Totally washes me out and makes me look like I’ve been in hospital for a month.

For a short, fat girl, you have a good sense of humor. And with that face, you have a nice personality. 🙂
Your comic writing is the best around. It amuses us greatly.
I’ve read many posts about dressing pears. When will someone finally tell us how to dress carrots?!
suzanne carillo says
Ha ha! This made me laugh : ) I need to write a post about how to dress a carrot. Thanks for inspiring me.

I didn’t realize you’re not feeling well. Get better soon!! You are stunning in this outfit – breaking rules (though I did not even know about that one), doing what pleases you and looking gorgeous as always. What a quirky lady you met! And she argued with you! Keep in mind that she might have thought of someone else though, just replaced you with another person in her head – memories are sweet, but memory sometimes fails us, especially at older age. My grandma remembered vividly what happened 70 years ago, and couldn’t remember what happened 5 minutes ago. It can be tricky. 🙂 xxx
suzanne carillo says
Well, in all honesty I was quite young at the time and anyone over the age of 35 was “old” LOL. Sad but true. She could have been 50.
We laughed and laughed about that for over a week. Co-workers would run to get out of my way so the “short fat lady” could get through. Sometimes (mostly the bellmen) would come up and call my name pretending not to see me because I was too short to see over the front desk! Then they’d say, “Oh! There you are short fat lady!” Yep…that was quite the joke.
Natalia Lialina says
You did have some fun with this LOL!
So what we are learning at the end, the lady was as old as you were short and fat. Not a bad way to end the story! 🙂

Ahhhh Suzanne…so much to comment and so little space! First and foremost…I hope you feel better soon. The only good thing about being sick is the thought of how good you feel when you’re not sick (and to try to appreciate that). Second, I would never look at this outfit and think anything bad (short, fat, or even pear shaped)….i think you look fabulous—the flowiness of the tunic is counterbalanced by the close fitting (and absolutely wonderful) white jeans!
yes…I’ve heard that theory about wearing white makes you look bigger and black smaller….but I’m a true believer that it is the fit/cut of the item that makes the majority of the difference!
As for marshalls….we all have our vices and we’d be way too boring without them!! jodie

ps…and that movie makes me sob!
suzanne carillo says
Isn’t that movie THE BEST? {sigh} I adore Robert Redford’s style in the movie too.

I love this shirt of flowers, it is really nice. I like the asymmetrical design and the look with white pants. The clutch is cute.

Thanks Josep-Maria : )

I think you look lovely. That top with a black skirt? Instant LBD. Hope your heels are better, that’s a special kind of pain.
suzanne carillo says
That is true. I have to try it with a black skirt.
I’m off to some massage therapy soon and orthotics. We’ll see if that helps. Funny enough, since I’ve been sick with other stuff it has all but fallen off my radar. When you start having more than one problem you have to prioritize.
Shelley@ForestCityFashionista says
I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been well – I hope it’s nothing serious, and that you’re feeling better very soon. The Way We Were is one of my very favourite films too, especially if I’m in the mood for a good cry (the last scene gets me every time).
The tunic top is very pretty – I’m glad you kept it!
suzanne carillo says
I’ll get some results back next week. I’m hoping that’ll be that and I can forget about it.
I’m feeling much better than I was at the beginning of the week. I thought briefly I might be spending my birthday back in the hospital like I did 2 years ago. Not a tradition I want to continue.
Paperesse says
Oh, now, you don’t look like a pear in the least! I like this look and think you look great in it. You’ve inspired me with the white jeans. Remember my last comment about wanting a pair? Well, I up and bought capri length ones today. Not thrift, but on sale. It’s funny, I used to steer away from white because I thought it made one look larger, but now I’m thinking the opposite. And you’re right, they do go with anything!
And most importantly, I hope you feel all better real soon!
suzanne carillo says
I can’t wait to see them. Will they be making an appearance on your blog?
I’m starting to feel better…hopefully the results will reflect that.
two birds says
Bahahaha! You make me laugh. I cannot believe anyone would ever call you fat and short or pregnant. You definitely do not look either. But I do love that you called the old lady out!
And yes, Marshalls. It sucks us all in!
I hope you are feeling better very soon! xo.
suzanne carillo says
I think she was taken aback when I called her out on it. But seriously…I’m not about to let anyone stand in front of me and call me that to my face. I can remember I think my whole face went red right there. I was going to blow a gasket! LOL
Elle says
I loved reading this! But please put your self critical eye away! Love the white jeans, a classic for summer and beyond, and I adore the bold black print. I also would wear heels with this, as I do with just about anything. This is gorgeous on you, well done.
What a rude lady, btw.!
I have found that the mirror lies and only the camera tells the truth..
Happy weekend!

Also- I’d never heard that about white. I do think the heels help (because the tunic is longish, not due to colors are odd or anything), and overall quite like the look. Lol, at the story. Totally something my grandmother would do/say. Not meaning to be mean about it (she kept referring to this one person who was a waitress at a favorite restaurant as “That pretty girl except for the tattoos” despite the fact we kept telling her the woman’s name and that the woman was an old family friend! ), but yeah… not the most tactful! Glad you and your coworkers had a sense of humor about it (especially since you are neither short nor fat. You seem very typically proportioned actually; if I remember you said you were something like 5′ 4″.)
suzanne carillo says
Your Grandma sounds quite hilarious, not PC at all.
Yes, I’m 5’4″ and the lady was shorter than myself! LOL

I hope you feel better soon! It’s no fun to be ailing when the weather is beautiful.
You’ve inspired me to get my white jeans out and actually wear them – if they still fit.

Oh so sorry you haven’t been feeling well, Suzanne! If you were here with me in NYC we’d go right away for a coffee/wine and make it better. I’ve always resisted the fruit labels for women’s bodies. Sometimes I feel like dressing like a grape. Hope you are feeling much better asap. xoxo
suzanne carillo says
LOL I would pay some good money to see you dressing like a grape!
Thanks for the well wishes…hope your trip went well!
Melanie says
Pear is not bad; it’s when people start calling you a starfruit that you have to worry.
In fact, women pay money for implants to look even more pear-like. Pear is IN!
You, sadly, are not pear.
I like the tunic, especially with the lower cut in the back. Of course you look smashing!
I hope your health is improving day by day. Good thoughts zooming your way of course, and always.
suzanne carillo says
Ha! I would be scared if someone said I look like a starfruit.
You can tell someone’s age by saying, “Your butt looks really big in that!” If they are my generation they will be horrified and take it off immediately. If they are the current generation they will be delighted.
Thanks for the well wishes…I think they are working! : )

Sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well…but you look great in that outfit! I can’t believe how much we have in common. I, too, was congratulated on being pregnant when I wasn’t. I was just fat apparently. 🙁
I love the Weeble reference too…hahaha

I’m a total pear, and you’re correct…I don’t want to be that!!! I’ve worn white on the bottom and a darker color on top and I don’t think it accentuates it at all. For me what accentuates it is too much fabric on the bottom half. Like a full skirt or the wrong cut top and wider leg pants.

the photos did fool me ‘cos you don’t look ill at all. Hope you feel much better very soon.

The whole outfit looks great. Never heard of Marshall’s so don’t know why it’s bad.

I hope you are feeling better lovely lady – I like your outfit, you are always totally gorgeous and you made me laugh, and I’m totally embracing some mahoosive garments this summer which Dave has told me (helpfully) aren’t very ‘me’ and are too big, but who cares! they are flowy lovliness and I am now far too old to have someone think I’m pregnant, I’m just an incognito weeble haha! take care of your lovely self x x x

I would say you are neither short, not fat, nor pear-shaped, and you look fabulous in those jeans and the floral top. So there!

I hope you are feeling better! I’m always surprised when you mention your height – you always look so much taller to me. I actually love the proportions of this outfit and think you look gorgeous!

I am sorry I so late to the party. Very busy week with lots of overtime. But here I am.
I don’t think this top hides anything. You just wait until a soft wind blows this top against your body… nothing to hide then.
I think it is a fabulous top and I like it very much with those trousers and fab sandals. Again one of your nice necklaces. Loved the story of the fat girl who helped haha. And I love the fact you like Barbra Streisand. So do I. I think her voice is the best. Whenever I hear her in duet with Celine Dion, although I am not a fan of the latter, I hear two great voices and get goose pimples.
