So since I've been away this happened…
The worst ice storm in Ontario and the north east which ripped apart our backyard. $700 later the branches were removed but in the spring we will need to pay again to have the tree trimmed professionally. So sad since I loved that massive tree. Our neighbourhood was a mess. It looked like a bomb had gone off.
We were lucky enough not to have our power go out as well. So many people suffered for days in the cold without power.
To escape our horrible winter we headed down to Florida for a few days.
And Flagler Beach.
Did a little hiking with flocks of egrets.
You can't really tell here but this place looked like Jurassic Park. I fully expected to see a dinosaur come out and chase us. Luckily we didn't spot any alligators or crocodiles.
Wild mushrooms spotted on the trail.
Road going into the park.
We went to Kennedy Space Centre and saw the space shuttle Atlantis.
Walked more trails.
Enjoyed the wonderful extended coastline and endless beaches.
Hung out on the wharf.
And had a picnic on the beach.
Yes, it was cooler than we'd hoped. I guess we were big ninnies though since there were people in the water swimming and surfing! What??? I think those people swimming were from Nebraska or the Yukon and had skin like a polar bear.
This is the last look we had before driving back to Orlando to catch our delayed (of course) flight home.
Oh! I almost forgot! The BEST thing that happened when we were there was that I was carded!
I know what you're thinking…the guy must have been 100 and visually impaired, but he was around 22 and didn't have a white cane by his side or a seeing eye dog.
I was so confused and clueless I actually looked at Robert and said, "What, we get asked for id when we are buying groceries now? What is this, a police state?"
Then Robert pointed out the wine we were buying. Duh!
This old lady forgot there was a time when I couldn't buy alcohol.
So that was like a little extra Christmas gift for me.
Until someone here spoiled it for me and said that in the States they often card anyone under 40.
Is that true? Or was someone just trying to steal my sunshine?
Welcome back! Does the weather absolutely suck or what? At least you got away for a while. Of more importance…you got carded! Yay! Typically, at least in PA, if you look under 30 they will card you for alcohol and if you look under 25 for cigarettes. I’ve been carded a couple of times in the last year or so and it’s always a huge self-esteem booster! It makes me laugh though because usually I’m old enough to be the mother of the person who cards me…

There seems to be different rules in different states–I’ve seen some signs in stores that say “If you’re lucky enough to look under 39, we card”. But then, Angel’s ordered a drink without being carded before, I was surprised at that! My parents and grandparents were without power for 5 days over Christmas during the storm–seems like it hit a lot of areas hard!
It’s been a LOOONG time since I’ve been carded…it would totally make my day! Sorry to hear about the tree but glad you didm’t lose power. The pictures of your vacation are so peaceful…looks like you had a nice relaxation time. We took some time off and went to see the space shuttle Endeavour and it was such an amazing experience.

Happy New Year Suzanne! I am so sorry about the loss of that gorgeous tree. That’s a tough one. On the other hand it looks like you and your husband had a fabulous trip. I adore those pics of your orange gown! WooHoo! That looks like a fun night;). The one of you in a cap? Darling!
I had a forced break with ER and that whole mess so I’m still working on getting back up to full speed.
Happy New Year my dear!
xx, Heather
Well at least the house is good and everyone in your fam is safe and sound. And you got some nice warm (relative) R&R from the cold winter!
Weather here is miserable too. So sorry about the tree though, sad and expensive. Happy it didn’t do more damage. Loved the photos of your happy memory making, congrats on getting carded. Hugs!
Wow, that ice storm sounds horrible! Glad you could escape.
How cool that you got carded, young goddess that you are;-)! I’m afraid that I am way, way passed that…hahaha.
For a moment I thought that white suit was you showing of your new ice storm outfit, but fortunately it’s just a spacesuit;-)
I love these pics of the Space Center. (Sandy worked there on the first shuttle, Columbia, in the 80’s). You two look like native Floridians – we bundle up whilst others swim. Sorry about your tree – that’s a heartache. Stay cozy and come back to Fla soon, and let’s meet! xox
I’ll take under 30 : )
People must either be really happy or very frustrated getting carded all the time.
That must have been hard on your family without power. And cold.
It is cool to see something that has been in space. Seems unreal.
Ha ha. Yes Robert gets that quite often : )
Yes this winter is going down in my books as one of the worst, although when we lived in Quebec City I said that every year.
I hope you are taking it easy and feeling better now Heather. I read about that scary day for you.
True. That tree could have easily come crashing through our bedroom window.
Since the weather here was a crazy -30 yesterday with the windchill I am thinking I didn’t appreciate the 22 C we had in Florida enough.
Happy New Year Katherine!
Ha ha ha ha ha! That would have been WAY funny if that was me floating around!
Okay that is seriously cool that Sandy worked on the shuttle.
Funny enough I think we were the most bundled up out of anyone. Lots of people were walking around in shorts. I think it is because they were “Northern Floridians” : )
What a lovely time you must’ve had! I love the coast of Florida.
And BONUS You got carded!! Totally because you look like your hubby robbed the cradle with you!!!
Ha ha! I’m totally telling my husband you said that : ) Especially since he goes on and on about how much younger he is than me. He is 11 months younger.
Great post. I am off to bed now.
Greetje
PS you do look young
You are too kind Greetje : )
