As kids we knew how to play. Using our imaginations and letting ourselves go was easy.
Do you remember those days?
As adults we get caught up in being responsible and mature grown ups. When was the last time you gave yourself permission to play?
You’re Never Too Old To Play Dress Up
Get silly. Be weird. Above all…LAUGH!
You’re only going around this block once baby…best make it count.
A couple of weeks ago I went out to visit my family and some blogging friends for my birthday.
I decided we should have a night of playing dress up 1920’s style.
It was a BLAST!!! Nothing held us back from really letting go.
No, it wasn’t Halloween.
We were just having fun, looking marvellous playing dress up like we did when we were kids.
We may all be past the age of 40 but there is the spirit of an audacious sixteen year old drama queen living in each of us.
Part diva too.
Mel killing two birds with one stone…of course!
I could exercise like this all day!
Don’t invade my personal space.
Sometimes you feel like the walls are closing in on you.
What mischief have you been up to tonight ladies?
None of us cared one bit about the stares we got on the street.
In fact we revelled in them. More often than not people came up and told us all how wonderful we looked. People appreciated that we were out enjoying ourselves dressed to the nines.
If you haven’t seen it yet Sherry made a brilliant little movie of our evening and visit which includes Sherry and I doing the “Elaine dance”.
You can read Sherry’s full account of our meet-up here.
You can read Melanie’s account of the evening here.
Playing Dress Up At Talize – The Adult Playground
We didn’t play dress up just once. Oh no! When it’s this much fun you do it again.
Although Sue wasn’t there for the 1920’s evening she was there when we took the afternoon to play dress up at Talize.
Thrift stores are a massive playground for becoming whomever you want to be.
Mel was supposed to be beige woman but decided in the end she couldn’t be all beige because it might kill her.
She was also Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman.
Sherry was Krystle from Dynasty with only one boob implant.
You know how that goes.
I was proof that the clothes really do make the woman.
Who would you buy a used car from? The woman on the left or the woman on the right?
I loved that lemon gown. If only I had a wedding to attend…
The three stooges.
Doing my impersonation of Molly Ringwald from Pretty In Pink.
Sherry doing Sherry.
I call this last one blue eyes, red lipstick.
When was the last time you had fun playing dress up?
If you liked this dress up post you might want to check out when I was in Holland with some other bloggy friends Anja, Sylvia and Greetje. I did in depth write ups on each of the ladies when I went to visit them and we also played dress up.
Linking up with the lovely Patti over at Visible Monday and Judith over at Hat Attack
You can feel the fun and laughter in these photos!!
And I love to see the items you found at the “playground”!! That yellow dress is so stunning!! Maybe we need to have a glamorous meet up where we can all wear our gowns that just sit in our closet??

I LOVE that idea! I’d been thinking about 1980’s prom but a red carpet event would be better.
So much fun! You guys would be a hoot to hang out with. I loved the “film” too. Can’t call it a video when it’s from the 20s now, can we?
Ha ha! Too true about the short “film”.
We do have fun when we get together. The best thing is that we are all game for it. There is no cajoling necessary.
Returning little by little 🙂 It feels good 🙂 And to see you and your friends in a “20s style party”, really cool! I loved the 20s hair style you chose and the tights and shoes! The dance was also sweet! I really liked the pictures, the fun and the line “you’re only going around this block once, so better make it count!” That is really a must to remember! Hope you have a nice week, dear Suzanne!

Welcome back!
Oooh, that yellow gown – a bride could wear it, if it fit her as fabulously as it does you! I so agree with your philosophy of play – it makes our hearts happy and gives the pedestrians something to talk about. You are all such fun, fabulous broads. xox

Shame you weren’t there Patti.
This made me realize that I never played dress up when I was a child.. #missedout I did however make mud pies. Maybe THAT’S why I hate to cook! lol
Ha ha! I also made mud pies but I still like to cook. That shoots down your excuse.
Now this was an excellent way to start my day Suzanne!
I adore the theatrical Gatsby-esque shots and the “how fun is this” gallivanting in the shops, all of you look so chic and magnetic in your beauty and enthusiasm.
Loved the “one boob” shot, and the motto- anthem,” Thrift stores are a massive playground for becoming whomever you want to be.”
I so agree!
Wish I were there, one day…

You would have loved it Elle. : )
I have enjoyed seeing little bits and pieces of this on Instagram from you and Sherry, so it was really fun to read more about it. Sherry’s movie was perfect! I love all of the dressing up, especially the 1920’s looks. So glamorous!
I agree. The 1920’s is a time when everyone was dressed so well.
Love this post Suzanne! Capturing the spirit of the 1920s! Ms Fisher has nothing on you! It looks like such a fun time and I love the dresses. Sherrys shoes are fab too!
Have a great week!
It is good to let your hair down from time to time, so right!

I love playing dress-ups, any excuse!! You all look fabulous. Such fun photos xx
One of these times we are going to dress up as “sister wives” all in wedding dresses.
It looks like you’re really having fun, that’s wonderful! I say now that we’re quickly approaching the ‘crazy old lady’ phase anyway, why not make the most of it and get a bit more eccentric (those of us who are a bit more timid and need an excuse, that is). Personally, I’m looking forward to getting to the ‘grumpy old hag’ phase (lot’s of repressed anger, maybe…), but I could use a bit more play and dress-up in my life, too.
When do guys become “crazy old guys”?
Yeah, I’ve never needed an excuse to be different.
So Much Fun! Suzanne, what an excellent way to start my day, a browse through all these photos, video, and recalling what a time we had. Hahaha – you put the uniboob shot! Love that photo! And you “exercising” on the recumbant bike with GQ, and the “used car” shot. Too many really. Yup, only once around the block.
I also really enjoyed revisiting your posts on your trip the Netherlands to visit Sylvia, Anja, and Greetje. You nailed it – I hadn’t met them yet when you wrote those pieces. You are such a good writer. And you make me laugh. Thank you!!
I think I took more time writing my posts back then. Now I feel sometimes I’m just “slapping them down” and they aren’t as funny or well written. There is only so much time in the day though. Back then I wasn’t thrifting like a crazy person.
I am laughing and laughing over this revisit from our blogger meet up! So many great moments. The theme here of “playing dress up” perfectly describes our spirit that weekend. I’m not sure if I laughed more at your favorite form of “exercise,” you trying to sell used cars (that killed me!), or the uni-boob shot followed by how the dress is really supposed to fit. 😂😂😂
Thank you for this! It’s started my Monday off right! Let’s do it again soon!
Hugs,
Sherry
Agreed. Do you think Mike will be game when you are here in Sept? Ha ha!
OMG…I LAUGHED so hard all through this post! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
That makes me very happy : )
Man, sure looks like you guys had a lot of fun! In college I used to take my cousins out and we’d dress up at stores–or sometimes they’d get dressed up using my personal dress collection and we’d go out and take photos. When I was a kid, Mom had a box full of her old clothes that we were always dressing up in! It’s a game that never loses its fun!
I agree, no matter the age trying on different clothing changes how we feel about ourselves and makes it easier to “step out of regular selves” for a bit.
You four are just exude joyfulness from every pore!! Clearly we can all tap into some playtime and share it generously. I know that’s one of the reasons I loved teaching 14 year olds so much. They were at that edge of adulthood but the child in them just kept leaking out all over everything and was begging to be preserved. It was wonderful to continue to keep that alive in myself and show them how valid it was to retain that part of themselves and to continue to nurture their inner child forever.
Dress up was one of the BEST imagination games. I’m convinced that my love of clothes carries the essence of that always.
They do say the more you hang around young people the younger you remain. Clearly it worked its magic on you Jude.
You always seem to have so much fun when you are together! Fantastic!
It is a riot every time we get together : ). Such a shame I live so far away otherwise we’d be doing it weekly.
Fabulous photos and I loved the video!
Sherry did a great job of that video. It was fun being so outrageous.
All that wonderful dressing up – you’re a girl after my own heart Suzanne. You seem to have been on a roll recently with all of this travelling and meeting up with bloggers as well as your hubby. I’m getting a bit envious of all the dressing up and fun you’re having. Life is indeed short and we must sieze the day – you’re a shining example of that!

Last year I decided that the most important thing to me this year was to ensure that I was seeing family and friends more often. Since none of my family or friends live anywhere near where I live that required lots of travelling. I’m very happy with my choice. Make cherished memories is what is important in life.
This is SO WONDERFUL. Happy you had fun. Playing like this is one of my wildest dreams.
Well…we could do this when you’re here!
Those photos are an absolute riot of joy! I wish I could have been there. Those 20s costumes are just brilliant and I LOVE your hair in that raven bob so much.
Too right, at our age we’re way past caring what people think or trying to fit in or bothered about being sexy. Its all about the fun. xxx
I can’t remember if I told you but I did dye my hair black once. It lasted about 3 days then it turned green griege. It was terrible. I do love the black hair look that you rock so very well.
I agree…fun is where it’s at!
hahaha in love with this post! xxx

As you very well know, I can only play dress-up if I can at least look a little good. Or I have to act the crazy saggy woman from out in the woods. I can do that. I liked the dress-up you, Sherry and Melanie did much more than our dress-up in The Netherlands. That was really wearing each other’s clothes. What you did, was act a 1920 roaring days play. And you did soooo well. I loved it. Wished I could have been there.
And I do hope you bought the yellow gown. If only to go to the supermarket in it. It looks breathtakingly good on you.
Greetje
You are so right, you are never too old to dress up; all you need is a sense of humour and to not give a fig about what other people think! I would have loved to have been part of your Gatsby evening – you all looking positively smashing. I can’t believe you managed to carry your outfit, wig included, all the way to Vancouver – that’s dedication. Sherry’s film captures the spirit of your adventure perfectly.
How fun! These are beautiful photographs. A definite benefit to getting older is not caring what other people think. You ladies are amazing!
It looks like you had so much fun! I love your 1920’s outfit too- it’s so sparkly.
You women are so much fun – and I’m so happy you all have such fun together! xx
You and your friends look like you have so much fun!

This post had me smiling as I sip my morning coffee. What a joyful way to celebrate your birthday and beautiful blogging relationships. The four of you look absolutely fabulous. Thank you for making my morning and for sharing your headwear with Hat Attack!
Wow! Can’t believe I didn’t see this post until today. My husband has had some time off, so he’s been distracting me! There’s nothing I like better than dressing up, especially if it involves a vintage theme. You gals look like you had a blast and I’m soooo jealous. I have a couple of friends who come visit every year in Florida. I pull out my bags of “costume” vintage and we have a great time dressing up and taking photos. After a couple of pitchers of my “white lightening” sangria things tend to get very very silly. So they made me promise not to post many of the pictures anywhere! But we have not tried the dress up thing out in public.
I commend you all for your courage and talent 🙂
Theresa
So much fun! Great vid Sherry made.
As you know I love playing dress up. Hope to be able to do so with you again one day.
