Gucci Geek Chic Style Over 40

April 18, 2016 by suzanne carillo

Gucci Geek Chic Style Over 40

gucci geek style suzanne carillo mature woman style

What is Gucci Geek Chic Style?

It looks like an eccentric hippie granny hooked up with a nerdy artist hoarder.

A Gucci Geek is the kind of person that catches your eye on the subway and you find yourself secretly wondering if they are as interesting as their clothes.

Check you streamlined minimalist views at the door, they won’t be needed here.

This is about lavish excess, clashing colours, patterns and textures.

A tickle trunk full of funky mismatched clothes.

More is more.

This collection reminds me of the documentary Grey Gardens.

“I’m a lover of beautiful things, I walk down the street and I fall in love with everything.” – Alessandro Michele, Creative Director Gucci

Yes it is pattern overload and a shock to the senses.

The flower is a clip on and I’ve tied some blue velvet ribbon around the neck.

Yes it is colour crazy.

If you follow me on Instagram you would have already seen this outfit when I created the look 10 days ago.

Yes it is extreme but in the best sense.

Most importantly it is about being creative and having fun with fashion.

This is the first time I’m featuring this unique vintage handbag I’ve had for years.

I’m delighted that the temperatures have warmed up enough that I was finally able to wear this without covering it up with another coat. Hooray for lazy-ass spring finally showing up in almost May.

I feel a bit like Mary Poppins in this. I adore her.

As a personal challenge I put together a couple of Gucci Geek Chic inspired outfits on Polyvore.

gucci geek chic look #1

Top          Skirt        Trench       Shoes

gucci geek chic look #2

Top     Cardigan     Skirt     Shoes     Handbag     Glasses

I truly adore that skirt with the Eiffel Tower on it and that floral trench coat.  In fact, a very big birthday is just around the corner for me and I wouldn’t be one bit disappointed if that entire first outfit just magically showed up on my doorstep one day.

Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

In the meantime I’m happy to wear this vintage skirt yet one more time which cost me $15. Cost per wear must be down to $1 I think.  The colour of the skirt is surprisingly versatile and the small pattern reads almost as texture visually.

7 Tips To Create Your Own Version of Gucci Geek Chic

  1. Consider the size of each of the patterns. It isn’t as overwhelming for the eyes if you have only one very large focal pattern. The other patterns should be smaller and will begin to read more like texture to the eyes.  In each outfit I’ve chosen one large focal pattern, a medium sized pattern and other smaller patterns.
  2. Incorporate different types of patterns, polkadot, floral, stripes.
  3. Use the large focal pattern’s colours to choose the other items in the ensemble. This ensures the outfit will look cohesive. In outfit #2 there is a tiny bit of yellow on the skirt, which is why I chose yellow for the top. There is black on the top, which allowed me to introduce black in the handbag. The green on the skirt matches the green on the cardigan.
  4. If you feel brave enough to choose a new colour that doesn’t exist in your focal pattern consider adding it with accessories or shoes, I added blue boots and blue ribbon to my outfit.
  5. More is more. Add some funky glasses or a hat. It will make a huge difference to the overall look.
  6. Mix your textures as well as your patterns. It creates another layer of visual interest.
  7. Try to stay within the same colour value and saturation for all your pieces. Everything I’m wearing is in jewel tones.

Do any of these outfits appeal to you?

Or is the Gucci Geek Chic just a bit too eclectic and over-the-top for you?

Must Have Spring Jacket

April 15, 2016 by suzanne carillo

Consignment, vintage and thrift store shopping offers us the opportunity to consider garments we normally wouldn’t like this…

Must Have Spring Jacket

Yes, I might have marvelled over this Ralph Lauren cavalry jacket had I seen it in a regular store, but I never would have tried it on partially because it would have been merchandised for someone much younger than myself and also because I wouldn’t want to faint from sticker shock.

One of my favourite consignment stores is where I spotted this beauty and those were both non issues.

I tried this military jacket on for fun.  I never thought it would fit or look any good on me.

In the end though it fit like a glove and I felt like a rock star in it.

And yes! Before you ask, of course every capsule wardrobe needs a military jacket in it.

Obviously.

It’s right up there next to plain black trousers and a crisp white shirt, both of which I don’t own.

Anarchist!

How many times have you had an invitation to a fabulous party that requires, “Army Attire Only“?

Right?

Just last week my pug and I weren’t able to attend several celebrity star studded events because I had nothing to wear. Difficult to imagine if you saw the size of my closets. (As a style blogger it is totally normal to have more than one closet FYI.)

Zoë’s cavalry jacket was at the cleaners otherwise she would have probably gone without me. Ingrate.

Apparently military jackets *was* a big trend back in 2014 if we are to believe Who What Wear. I now own a “Cool-Girl Jacket”.

Yes I’m two years late.

No I don’t care.

These guys set the trend, way back when…

This guy too.

And this guy…

mjackson_military_jacket

RIP

I didn’t do myself any favours by showing you the catalogue shot of the model wearing the jacket first. The girl and I mean girl is less than half my body weight and maybe less than a third my age.

Now you get to see this spring must have jacket on a real woman.

Prepare yourself…

Just so happens this vintage ankle-kisser-can’t-make-up-its-mind-maxi-or-midi-skirt is in the same colour as the trim on the jacket. Jackpot!

Of course this isn’t a must have spring jacket…

Or maybe it is.

Anything goes nowadays if you ask me.

Many people will dislike this look on a woman over forty. They may even call it, “Wackadoo!”

At least it is a WackaDOO and not a WackaDON’T. (I think, anyhow. Taste is subjective.)

One of my goals when I get dressed is to be memorable, this jacket helps me achieve that goal.  Often people just want to blend in when they get dressed but I am not one of them.

This suits my personal style statement perfectly.

I don’t follow trends, I follow what excites and suits me.

I honestly believe that “trend” is an antiquated word and has lost its meaning. Fast fashion and social media move too quickly. Every day there is a new “must have” item.

“The word ‘trend’ is a little bit like the word ‘luxury’ — nobody really knows what it is anymore, where it starts, where it ends,”- Pierre-François Le Louët

Understanding your body type, what appeals to your personal sense of style and knowing the impression you want to leave with people is much more important than any so-called-trend.

Do you think fashion trends are an antiquated idea?

In my recent hot yoga the instructor read out loud while we transitioned through poses, ⁣

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. It's a reminder of what it means to face resistance and keep moving. Like an airplane meeting headwinds, we often find our strength not in smooth skies but in turbulent ones. Headwinds build lift. They give the wings something to push against. In the same way, strength through resistance is born in those moments when everything feels uphill. It’s in these moments that quiet courage grows, even when it doesn’t feel heroic. Struggles don’t always mean we’re failing. They may mean we’re in the very place where transformation begins. The wind that pushes against you now might be the wind that teaches you how to soar. ⁣
