The Nirvana of ALL Estate Sales

November 9, 2014 by suzanne carillo

What makes a person get up super early on a Saturday morning, drive for 35 minutes into the city and then stand outside in line the freezing cold for 2 hours?

An estate sale of epic proportions.

IMG_8720

This was just one of the many rooms in this massive luxury mansion filled with new and vintage clothing collected over several lifetimes.

IMG_8737

There were over 300 hats.

IMG_8725

Estate sale hats

Many of them were included in an article written about the vintage hat collection which was featured in the National Post. I loved so many of them and held several in my hands…pondering if I should buy them.  They were so beautifully crafted…but I talked myself out of buying any and I’m still kind of kicking myself for that. They were only $10 each. I figured though that unlike the Queen of England, a hat for each outfit isn’t a requirement. It’s a crying shame!

How to shop for handbags at estate sales. What to expect at estate sales.

See all the handbags? I was sad because when the doors opened we were back pretty far in the line …maybe 30 or so, and it was impossible to jockey for a position in front of those bags as 70% were grabbed up in the first 3 minutes of them opening the doors. I did score four beauties though!

If you are wondering where I got the photos from…it wasn’t in the melee that ensued when we were let in…it was bedlam in there! These were borrowed from the website of the estate sale company prior to the sale.

How to shop estate sales. Boxes of designer ties.

There was one entire room filled with boxes that were filled with ties. Literally there were thousands of ties there. Celine, Burberry, Versace, Missoni were some of the brands that my husband picked up…about 20 for $15. Holla!

We were a bit bummed though since we had gone after an Underwood typewriter for my office that looked pristine and once again we were too late…a guy just before Robert had snatched up the 3 typewriters they had for sale.

I’m still mourning the loss of this one.  Next time!

What else did we buy?

A long dark brown velvet 1960’s vintage coat made in Montreal, that I wore out last night…

A blue jean jacket, a blazer by Theory, 2 vintage gowns (one that I had turned into a maxi skirt), 1 vintage skirt made in Bologna Italy (LOVE) 1 totally rad 1960’s maxi and this crazy amazing cheongsam…

The dress, shoes and bag are all vintage purchased at estate sales. Although I’m wearing vintage head to toe I think this is a brilliant example of how to dress in vintage but still look contemporary.

I had to get this taken in quite a bit which was difficult because the zipper is on the side. In the end I put a few extra darts of my own in the back in addition to having it taken in and then one day later I think I gained 3 lbs because it was a bit snug. I curse you PMS!

Here I am doing my best Angelina Jolie imitation.

This dress looks like it was handmade by a skilled seamstress. It is in delicate condition. I’m going to have to hand stitch a fair amount of the inner lining as it has started falling apart and some of the trim is fraying. I couldn’t leave it behind though.

There are slits on either side…thank heavens because otherwise it would be hard to move.

This is the reason I love going to estate sales or shopping at thrift stores…you just never know what you’re going to come across.

Forrest Gump would say it is the “box of chocolates” way to shop, and you know I love me some chocolate!

What about you? Do like the thrill of discovering hidden gems via thrifting, consignment stores or estate sale hunting?

Sister Style – Pushing You Out Of Your Personal Style Comfort Zone

November 7, 2014 by suzanne carillo

When my sister came and stayed with me of course we went shopping and of course I made her try on clothes that I thought would look good on her.

What?

Don’t you force people to try on clothes for your pleasure?

I’m the Gordon Ramsay of personal stylists.

I can’t help myself.

I know what is going to look good on them long before they do.

It is a gift.

Skills arduously developed over years and years of playing Barbie Dolls.

Only now my Barbie is a full sized person.

Often I need to ease them into the idea…a little harmless suggestion…

“Just for fun! I want to see what’ll it’ll look like. For me. Just try it on for me.”

All the while knowing full well that it is going to look damn great on them,

because…

ah hellooooo!

my Barbie was always the best dressed and consistently won all the beauty contests. I may have been an obnoxiously slightly competitive kid.

I’ll admit sometimes it takes some effort for the person to see what I see when they try on the clothes.

When they step out of their personal comfort zone they are unable to see themselves with objective eyes. Suddenly their head looks like it has been popped on someone else’s body.

Especially if you’re used to wearing scrubs all day. (My sister works in a hospital.)

So…this is a very long way of getting around to showing you some outfits I picked out for my sister while she was here…

How to wear a striped sweater and scarf easy fall style

This one was the easiest because it was basically the same outfit my sister had seen me wear earlier in the week. She already had the boots (aren’t they FAB?) and jeans and she found the scarf and sweater while we were shopping.

Here she is doing her best, “Blogger Pose.” #totallyuncomfortable

How to style a maxi dress in summer

I found this maxi for her at a really great thrift shop called Talize. It is too bad I didn’t take photos of her in all of the items I found for her there because she scored big time. We had a system, she shopped for her daughters and I shopped for her. Worked out perfectly.

And here we have La Pièce de résistance! The one I pushed her into trying on at Anthro.

Isn’t this going to be perfect for a vacation? Even paired with flats it’ll be cool.

I love the neckline and the slit in the back. Subtle sexy.

She is wearing some of my vintage sandals that I bought at an estate sale a while back.

I really love this jumpsuit on her. It truly is something she never would have considered for herself.

So how you think I did styling my sister?

Do you ever style friends or family members? Do they like it?

A special thank you to all of those that wrote in A special thank you to all of those that wrote in with their kind wishes upon the sudden and unexpected loss of my husband of 35 years. Your messages touched me deeply. 💗💗💗⁣
⁣
These past three months have been the longest and worst of my life. I am not the same person. Grief changes us. The loss of a spouse is widely considered the most stressful and world-altering, life-changing event a person can experience. It is often described as the most difficult loss, profoundly impacting daily life, identity, financial security and health, frequently described as feeling "entirely alone and incomplete". Often alongside the loss we lose friendships, support, loss of joy, desire, our health, our sleep, our interests and in some cases, the loss of the will to continue on. I have experienced all of these and continue to wade through these compounded multiple losses in addition to the loss of my life partner. It is an harrowing and lonely road to travel. ⁣
⁣
I had a good day the other day, took this photo, and decided to try to do a bit of work. I'm still not able to concentrate or function as in the past but I continue to put one foot in front of the other because there is no other choice. ⁣
⁣
Please understand that I won't be responding to comments as I find it too overwhelming and triggering. I have just started to list some new items in my Etsy shop and hope to continue as I'm able. ⁣

I currently have my entire shop on sale at 25% off. ⁣
