Five Reasons To Buy Neon Yellow Boots

September 10, 2017 by suzanne carillo

When I’m sucked into the vortex of buying retail I need to prove to myself that it is worth it.

Too many times when I shopped retail I’d come out with a full outfit. While this is fun it isn’t very practical. Ideally each piece I buy should work seamlessly with other pieces I own. This is especially true if I’m stepping out of my colour zone and trying something totally weird wild, like radioactive neon yellow.

In the past I’ve only owned a few yellow pieces but this year I’ve been drawn to it like a pug to food.

The soft pastel yellow that I’m wearing here from a few years ago is easy on the eyes…a stepping stone if you will for people that aren’t used to wearing yellow.

This yellow skirt from Anthro just had a bit of yellow in it. Another baby step towards wearing more yellow.

I added a few iron on embroidered patches to make this yellow double breasted fall jacket unique.

This is my favourite shade of yellow, a warm golden yellow. This is the shade that works well with my complexion.

Recently I was drawn to this Anthropologie skirt.

Okay…I stalked the skirt online like an obsessed fan for about 8 months so when it went on super sale a week ago I snapped it up.

Please don’t tell me to get a life. I already know that behaviour is completely insane totally normal for a style blogger.

Did you notice anything?

The yellow is getting colder and brighter. Further away from the tone that works with my skin.

Finally I crashed through any remaining barriers when I saw these insanely bright basically glow-in-the-dark neon boots.

They’re cray-cray right? Suddenly cray-cray was perfect for my wardrobe.

I don’t know why.

The bright yellow is far enough away from my face to avoid triggering migraines.

I knew instinctively no matter what I’d pair them with it would look fresh so I paired them with vintage, of course.

Mixing up different eras of clothing adds visual interest, plus it’s just plain fun!

Skirt from my personal vintage collection. Yeah, its not just from my closet…it’s from my collection! Cardigan is an old Anthro purchase that I love. Brooch which you can barely see is vintage. Boots are from Zara (I’m cringing as I write that).

I thought they would be comfortable and I was right.

They go on like socks, they don’t emphasize my man legs and they elongate my body.

Check, check and check baby!

Here they are with a dress soon to be listed in my Etsy shop.

Now again with a groovy vintage 1970s maxi dress that is also going to be available for purchase soon.

But my favourite of all my looks with these electric yellow boots is this incredible vintage plaid wool jacket.

How excited was I when I found this coat?

This is me saying, “Yaaaaaasssss!”

This wonderful vintage jacket will NOT coming to the Etsy store soon.

Ha ha! This will be added to my private collection for a bit.

It is too damn incredible not to wear. Especially now that I have the electric boots!

I’ve been itching to write a post about coats since I saw the movie Atomic Blond. Did you see it? I’ve become obsessed with the insane style in that movie. I’ll save it for another post but I *may* have something being custom made for me and coming all the way from Russia with love. (No joke and no hints!)

So I think that I’ve proven to myself that the yellow boots deserve a spot in my shoe closet.

Do you also ensure items you purchase with work with what you already own?

PS You are going to be seeing a whole lot more of these boots in the future, they were so comfy I bought them in red too!

Fall Fashion Reinvention The Call Of New Clothes

September 7, 2017 by suzanne carillo

When you were in school did you get new clothes for the start of the school year?

We did. At least one new outfit.

fall fashion reinvention who do you want to be

Fall Fashion Reinvention

I remember to this day the very outfit I wore to my first day of grade one at school because it was the first time I owned

brand.

new.

clothes.

Clothes that my Grandma hadn’t sewn. Clothes that we bought from a real store and that I had helped pick out.

It was a yellow short sleeve ribbed sweater with a red elephant on it in satin and some bell bottom jeans. I LOVED that outfit!

I can remember the anticipation and excitement of meeting all those new kids wearing something that I felt represented me as a person.

I was going to be someone special wearing that red elephant! I would make friends easier. Everyone would like me!

Every year thereafter the first day of school was always devoted to choosing the perfect outfit that would best represent myself as I desired to be seen. The chance to create a new first impression. It was an opportunity to become the person I aspired to be.

Would I go for understated plaid? Or the same bomber jacket as everyone else with a hoodie underneath? Did I want to blend in or stand out? Did I want to be a nerd or a jock? Where did I fit in and how would my clothing ensure that I was accepted?

I’m sure it won’t surprise you that after grade six (maybe even earlier) I didn’t want to blend in. I was on my own path and I wasn’t part of any cliques. By high school that meant skinny jeans (we just called them tight back then ha ha!) blue suede fringed boots, a boho blouse and a fake fur super shaggy sheepskin vest. That was grade ten and I haven’t looked back since.

When September rolls around my palms get a bit sweaty and I feel the itch to buy something new and try to reinvent myself or showcase a different aspect of my personality to the world.

I’d been lusting after an embroidered bomber jacket for years. I couldn’t find one thrifting and in a moment of weakness bought this one at TJMaxx.

Who doesn’t want to give a new first impression of themselves?

These sparkly fab boots have been returned for ones with a lower heel. I want a new first impression not back surgery.

Giving yourself the permission to experiment and play with clothing allows you to escape the you that you know and discover the you that you’d like to know.

If you haven’t had a chance to listen yet to Mel’s fabulous series of interviews on 60 and Me (there are five of them) I highly recommend them.

This might be my favourite one so far… Exploring the Power of Simple Black White and Grey With Mel Kobayashi. I really like the bit at the 8:35 mark.  All of the interviews are great though. Mel is a natural and so wonderful to watch and listen to. I might add she hasn’t paid me a dime to write that…yet! Ha ha!

This is what I do between photos…pretend I’m in a broadway musical.

I will admit that I went a bit overboard and picked up a few other very weird cool pieces for my new identity. Toys to be played with and utilized for creating joy in my wardrobe.

It is my UNcapsule wardrobe for fall.

Only items that made my heart smile or stimulated me to see myself differently but still work with items I already own were considered.

I’ll be sharing a few more pieces that made the cut with you soon.

Do you feel the calling to buy new clothes in fall and reinvent yourself?

In my recent hot yoga the instructor read out loud while we transitioned through poses, ⁣

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. It's a reminder of what it means to face resistance and keep moving. Like an airplane meeting headwinds, we often find our strength not in smooth skies but in turbulent ones. Headwinds build lift. They give the wings something to push against. In the same way, strength through resistance is born in those moments when everything feels uphill. It’s in these moments that quiet courage grows, even when it doesn’t feel heroic. Struggles don’t always mean we’re failing. They may mean we’re in the very place where transformation begins. The wind that pushes against you now might be the wind that teaches you how to soar. ⁣
