Velvet is warm, cozy and perfect for fall/winter.
Leather is sleek, sexy and timeless.
Combine the two and it’s a no brainer.
Velvet And Leather The Perfect Mates
Everything is thrifted except the boots which I bought at TJ Maxx. I had them altered at my shoe cobbler. They were thigh high and I had them shortened to just below the knee and taken in with the hopes that they will stay tight on my legs. They are still a bit baggy around the ankles due to the placement of the zipper which is disappointing. I’m hoping these will be in heavy rotation as they are neutral and basically skin tone. I’m not sure how they will hold up when the snow comes though.
I haven’t decided if I will keep the skirt or not yet. I really like the shape and colour. It looks fine with boots but once again it is hitting me at the thickest part of my man-cows (massive calves) which makes my legs appear even larger.
Here I am doing my very best to stop the snow from coming.
Wish me luck.
And here I am dreaming about being on a warm beach instead.
{sigh}
My husband just FaceTimed me from the beach just outside of Melbourne.
Seriously! It is 30 C and sunny with lovely clear waters and cute, colourful little beach huts.
Beam me up Scotty!
I suppose that should be, “Beam me down Scotty”.
I love the beach and would like to visit the hubby but I hate the 24 hour plane ride and the pug needs someone to love feed her.
I’m sharing a couple of photos of a vintage dress that I sold yesterday about a minute after I showed the photo on my Instagram.
I can always tell when I really love a piece because my photos turn out better. Otherwise I can look uncomfortable or bitchy.
To be perfectly honest I wasn’t sure I wanted to give up this lovely maxi dress. It goes so well with my sock booties!
Ah well…I can’t keep them all!
What is the point of having my Vintage by Suzanne store if I just keep it all for myself?
Then I’d be considered a hoarder.
And we all know I’m not a hoarder.
Right?
Ten bucks if you answer that last question correctly. Put it on my tab.

I love the leather midi, although, they are tough for me to wear length-wise! You look great in the dress!

Wow & More Wow I am going to have to start looking at your shop Suzanne! I’m wondering about postage but I’m sure it will say when I pop over. Two absolutely stunning outfits here. Love that idea of getting boots to fit just so x

Postage overseas is expensive from Canada. There is no getting around that : ( Considering the Canadian dollar is half the British pound it still might be a deal for you in the end. I’m not sure. I have shipped quite a few pieces to Europe.

I’m not surprised that dress got snapped up so quickly – it looks wonderful on you.
I think a lot of people are surprised by all the stuff cobblers do – it’s not just re-heeling shoes. xxx
suzanne carillo says
My cobbler also has a seamstress that works with him. I’m able to get zippers replaced and alterations that are too complicated for myself done as well. Plus I like giving work to independents shop owners.

I’d never have thought of having boots shortened at the cobbler’s, what a great idea. I’m not surprised that dress sold so quickly. It’s stunning. And it’s the best way to keep you from keeping it, I suppose 😉 I’d keep the skirt, but then I truly am a hoarder. There, I’ve said it. You do find the greatest pieces Suzanne! xxx
suzanne carillo says
Ha ha! You are a brave woman Ann. You know they say that admitting the problem is the first step to recovery! Probably why I’m still in denial.

I can never decide which I like more — your personality or your fashion style. Both are so appealing. Fortunately we get to enjoy them as a package deal. 🙂

You are too kind Ally.

That dress looked so good on you, no wonder it was snapped up so quickly. I have issues with skirts that are knee, or below the knee length, because if they’re not the right shape, they can look a bit matronly. I have a black leather skirt that is the same shape as the brown one you’re wearing, but a bit longer and I’m never sure how to style it so it doesn’t look dumpy. Given that it’s currrently too tight around the waist, I think it’s going to get passed on.
Shoe repair shops can work miracles. I got my spiky pink backpack repaired at one!

Agreed, velvet and leather are gorgeous mates!
Love the print, and the boots are fabulous..don’t even think of wearing them in the snow! ❄️❄️
Fabulous maxi, at least you got to wear it and be photographed in it..
I agree with Ally, fabulous style and great wit… fabulous fun with each and every post..
You are not a hoarder love, just a collector, which is often the fate of creatives….

I’m not surprised you sold that dress so quickly – it’s beautiful and you look stunning in it!
I loved your leather midi skirt but the top was also beautiful. The boots look great on you and what a lot of things they will go with; a fab colour to match with almost anything…
Petite Silver Vixen says
Oh my gosh that maxi is stunning. No wonder it went pronto.
At this time of year, I do love playing with fabrics and velvet and leather is right up my street!

You’re so right – the top and skirt look all the more awesome thanks to the fabrics. The boots are fabulous and really don’t emphasise your imaginary calve issues. I know we all tend to focus on these things – I’m sure I have chumfy thighs and no amount of persuading will change my mind.
The maxi dress is beautiful, therefore no surprise you sold it. You look very elegant and serene in it, but hey, I understand that you just can’t keep everything, can you?

Good quick sale. That’s the best! I can’t believe you had those boots lopped off. Now how are you going to show off you gams when you wear your winter minis? Hunh?!!! But they’re great boots. I’m glad you were able to adapt them to what you need. For the record, you have awesome gams. Those photos of Australia make me wish my office chair could fly, I sit buckled in all day it seems. Why not be able to fly while I’m at it? That’s called logic at work. And those red booties, too good. Don’t sell them!!
Marilee Gramith says
Your thighs are just curvy and strong, much like Wonder Woman!
The outfit you’ve created with leather and velvet is RICH. Like delicious chocolate truffles rich. The colors in the top and the boots matching the top so well… So Fall edition of Vogue magazine good.
That maxi dress is also really lovely. It’s sexy in that cool but covered up way. The tights and red booties are perfect.
Fabulous post.
Marilee Gramith says
Oops, I meant calves. Im sure your thighs are great too though! :-):-)

You are a hoarder, just like the rest of us haha. And I would NEVER have sold this dress. By golly (😊) that dress looked good on you. And I am regretting never to have bought those sock boots. At the beginning I thought they were so so. Then you started to show them time after time and now I love them.

I forgot to say that I am not seeing anything like “man calves” or “thickest part” in that top creation of yours. Just a perfect styling, outfit. Love the boots (don’t mind a little shaggyness) love the skirt, love the top.

Brilliant idea on shorting the boots, I never would have thought of that! I love the skirt and velvet top and how you styled it. I just purchased a floral velvet jacket that is on it’s way to me and I was looking for some outfit ideas. I was planning to pair it with denim, but I love how you styled it with leather! I need to watch your shop closer as that dress is sooo gorgeous, someone out there is one lucky lady to have snatched that one up! Im with Greetje, I don’t see any man calves, just gorgeous styling!

Just came across your blog via Not Yet Dead…..Thanks for the idea of combining velvet and leather…..I didn’t like my suede maxi, so I had the tailor turn it into a knee length skirt….any chance it could work with your leather maxi? Happy Holidays from Washington, DC!

velvet and leather look fabulous together, and you look fabulous wearing them!. I love those ‘revamped’ boots and they look cool and elegant!
And hope that somebody is going to enjoy that stunning dress you sold.
