Jean jackets have become much more mainstream these past few years for both men and women. In the past they were considered casual attire. Now you can find them dressed up taking the place of a blazer or a more formal jacket or coat.
I want Robert to try this look! Spiffy!
How about this for great contrast?
I recently saw this outfit
Which I LOVE!
I have worn my jean jacket belted before but this made me think how it can be worn simply as a top. Women often wear blazers with nothing underneath…why not a jean jacket?
The outfit below makes me feel very “Ralph Lauren”. I also feel like I may have left my horse double parked somewhere.
Skirt – Danier (thrifted) (sim very nice on sale) Boots – thrifted (sim on super sale!) Jean Jacket – H&M (old) (sim) Watch – Jord Scarf – thrifted (sim and very pretty on sale!)
Remember that amazing trip to the thrift store in Hamilton that is 45 minutes from my house? That is where I found this gorgeous Danier suede skirt, the bag and boots. Holla!
The bag is by Bertotti (sim) and so comfortable. I know people don’t normally talk about a bag being comfortable but as I have Fibromyalgia any kind of pressure on my shoulders/neck really bothers me. This has an extra wide strap that helps avoid any pressure points.
Yes my pug was making me smile off camera. She is such a clown.
Do you recognize this scarf? It was twice the size before. I decided it was too much like wearing an uncomfortable neck brace so I cut it in half, stitched the sides and it is much easier to wear. If you get the other half as a birthday gift please act like you have no idea.
I enjoyed wearing my jean jacket as a top. There were no wardrobe malfunctions and it was more comfortable than I though it would be.
You could easily wear a tank top or camisole underneath if you feel concerned about the buttons popping open or any gaping.
Me, I went with just a bra cause I like the risk involved. I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you. It reminds me of the time I drove to the airport to pick up my then boyfriend dressed only in an overcoat, barely there lace lingerie, high heels, fishnet stockings and garter. The whole time I kept wondering if I’d be stopped by the police for speeding. Ha ha! Good times my friends… good times.
What do you think about wearing a jean jacket as a top? Would you ever consider it yourself?
What about picking up your lover wearing just an overcoat & lingerie? Don’t be shy. I promise not to tell anyone.
Have a wonderful New Year and all the very best to you and yours in 2015!
Linking up with the lovely Patti over at Not Dead Yet for Visible Monday.
Natalia Lialina says
Happy New Year Suzanne! You just give me a wonderful idea! I used to wear jackets as tops (read: just over a bra) all_the_time… what happened, how did I forget all about it?! I am going to do it. Definitely. Thank you – I enjoyed this post very much. xxx
Pam@over50feeling40 says
Awesome outfit and while I love the inspiration look…yours is so much better! You look great, Suzanne!
carillo suzanne says
Thanks Pam : )
Natalia Lialina says
Suzanne, my head is spinning… Thank you so much for inviting me! I would love to come! Depending on what time in 2015, I might be able to come to Vancouver. Seattle is of course easier to manage for me. One way or another, this sounds like a great adventure. I’ll look into your previous posts again (I sometimes just skim and don’t read carefully). xxx
carillo suzanne says
I hope you can make it! It would be so much fun.
Paperesse says
You look fab here! Love the outfit (especially that skirt). If a jean jacket was lightweight enough, maybe I’d try it as a shirt, but the one that I currently have (and those I’ve had in the past) just isn’t a material that I feel moves enough to wear comfortably on its own like a top.
carillo suzanne says
I thought it was going to be uncomfortable but my jean jacket is well worn and it wasn’t bulky or rigid at all. I really liked it in the end.
Patti says
Fabulous look, Suzanne – you’ve inspired me yet again to try something new. At first I thought the top picture was supposed to be you, until I saw the beard! Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, and for the awesome necklace that’s featured on my post today. xox
carillo suzanne says
LOL! I think I’d really need to adjust my hormones if that first photo was me. Although I could totally see rockin’ this menswear look too…just sans the facial hair. That makes me cringe. Just the thought of all the food that would get caught in there creeps me out.
Tiina L says
I just love the skirt and the boots, and they look great with the denim jacket. Denim is not really my thing, I used to wear jeans all the time at one point, I suppose I overdosed on denim that way… But you look fantastic in this outfit.
carillo suzanne says
I couldn’t live without my jeans. Well I could, but then I’d be in yoga pants and that is how eight years ago 20 lbs crept up on my frame without me noticing. Never again.
Tami Von Zalez says
I WILL consider a jean jacket as a top. I really, really like the gal with the jean jacket over a flowy formal. Tres chic!

Thanks for popping by Tami. Loved your post.

I really like the scarf cut in half now, I imagine it’s a little more comfy/easy to wear! I am defintely pro-denim jacket. My grandma told me to buy a scarf or shawl or stole to wear at my wedding reception in case I got cold…so, I bought a cropped denim jacket to wear with my wedding dress…. “That wasn’t what I was picturing!” she said…
carillo suzanne says
LOL I think I remember seeing a photo of you with the jean jacket in your wedding dress…or maybe that was on one of your anniversaries : )
The scarf is SO much easier to wear now.
Debbie Stinedurf says
Absolutely stunning my friend. One of the very first photos I happened upon of you that lured me to your blog was of you wearing a belted denim jacket…you nailed it then and you nailed it now. Love it! I’ve been thinking about cutting my plaid blanket scarf in half…but I’m scared…
Debbie

carillo suzanne says
Cut away! It really was easy and I like the scarf so much better now. Let me know if you take the plunge and it doesn’t work out. I will deny everything. Ha ha!
Accidental Icon says
What an interedting idea! zzzzi love the choice of colors the blue and brown is spectacular on you. Thee best part was finding out that you like to take risks…spice of life you go girl.

Happiness at Mid Life says
This is such a great look! I seriously LOL with your double parked horse comment! I am a bit too overweight right now to wear my denim jacket as a top – I would probably look like a stuffed sausage. I think adding the belt really helps to define the waist and add a great feminine touch.

Trina says
No question, I would definitely wear my jean jacket as a shirt, especially now that you’ve shown me how wonderful and comfortable it can be. I’m even considering the jacket only pick-up (what man wouldn’t love that?)
Love you newly halved scarf, now I’m wishing my birthday would creep around real soon (haha).
carillo suzanne says
I’ll tell you that was the most exciting drive to the airport in my life. And drive back. LOL
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
I’d maybe try it, but I’d have to have a really light t-shirt underneath. Knowing me, I’d forget I was wearing it as a top and begin to remove it when I went indoors….um…oops.
And aren’t you the saucy one, picking up a beau wearing little more than a trench coat. Did you see the Modern Family episode? The one where Claire’s belt gets caught in the escalator? Uh-uh….bad things can happen Suzanne, so be careful!
carillo suzanne says
Ha ha! I DID see that episode and I laughed and laughed.
Seriously though the whole drive to the airport I was thinking, “What if I have an accident? What if the police stop me?” Then I thought again….with some background cheesy porn music playing in my mind, “What if that super hunky Police officer stops me? ” Ha ha! (wink)
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
hahaha…you know what? You’re like the cool girl I never got to hang out with in hang school! Love you!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
that should be ‘high’ school…
CiCi Marie says
OMG you actually did the overcoat thing! My hat is well and truly off to you. I’m loving the denim jacket as a top look – you look fab here. When j wear them, I do tend to have them buttoned up (e.g http://cici-marie.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/outfit-when-in-paris-part-2.html) but I always cheat and have a top underneath. That’s usually more for the cold than anything mind you! CC x
carillo suzanne says
Those photos you showed with the leopard skirt are two of my favourites of yours.
Try it out on your man the next time! I guarantee he will NOT be disappointed.
carillo suzanne says
The overcoat thingy…of course ; )
Vix says
Yep, you look great, that skirt is dead sexy on you!
I’ve been wearing a denim waistcoat as a top for about 20 years – with nothing worn underneath. It my holiday staple. Denim looks good with anything.
I rarely wear anything but knickers under my vintage green leather trench coat, not to be sexy, I’m just lazy! xxx
carillo suzanne says
That is why I like you so much. Not because you’re lazy…I would never use that word to describe you. But because you take risks. I love that.
Cheryl Tucker says
I love the idea of a jean jacket worn as a top and will definitely try it out!
Connie says
You do look very Ralph Lauren in this outfit. I love when you make the most of your coloring with Autumn hues. However, sea of shoes’ denim with denim. I just can’t do it. I had an annoying classmate back in the 1970’s who always wore denim with denim. To this day it drives me nuts. Hmmm…maybe I should talk to a shrink about this. You, however, never drive me nuts. Gorgeous!
carillo suzanne says
LOL I know what you mean about the Texas tuxedo look though. I’ve wanted to do it so many times and it always comes off looking strange and I end up not wearing it. It reminds me too much of this photo

I like the idea of the denim jacket as a top – I had to do that once in Seattle when I left my office building to get coffee and a seagull dropped a load on my shirt. I went back upstairs and had to soak most of the shirt, so I wore my denim jacket as a top for most of the day. Maybe I started a trend then….
Your outfit looks great – perfect mix of denim and leather!
carillo suzanne says
Isn’t that the WORST when a bird craps on you? Blech!!! I was standing in line in San Fran waiting to get on the boat to go across to Alcatraz and a seagull dumped a HUGE load on my head. SPLAT!!! Like a big egg!!! Everyone around me just took three steps back including my husband and then they all started to laugh hysterically. Meanwhile the crap is running down my face into my eyes and I feel like I’m about to hurl everywhere. I managed to wipe most of it off with some kleenex…all the while trying not to vomit. When we got on the boat I went straight to the bathroom and literally put my whole head under the tap. I truly felt violated. That bird scarred me for life.
I always knew you were a trendsetter. I just never knew it was through necessity that you derived your inspiration.
Shelley@ForestCityFashionista says
I think this works so well on you because you have a very defined waist, and you’ve belted the jacket. There is a little bit of the “Wild West” vibe, but only in the very best way. Great score on the Danier skirt (we do love our leather and suede skirts). I have always wanted to wear a little denim jacket over a party dress, but have never found one that fits just right.
10 years ago, I would have driven to pick up a paramour in lingerie and a coat, but not now. Good for you! It’s those kinds of things that make the best stories.
I won’t be making it to Toronto over the holidays after all, but we’ll make a date for lunch in the New Year.
carillo suzanne says
I am disappointed we won’t be getting together sooner but look forward to seeing you again in the New Year.
When I retold that story it reminded me that I need to step up my game a bit. That was some 23 years ago. I need to get back into taking more risks like that. Life is what we make of it after all.
Spashionista (Alicia) says
I like your outfit a lot, and I love your take on “risk”. I have a lace trimmed scoop necked denim jacket that I’ve worn as a shirt. I may have to dig it out of my closet after the Spring thaw 😉

I love your inspiration pics and wish DH or one of my son’s would give the man version a try…I’ve never thought of wearing a jean jacket as a top , but love what you’ve done with it… I agree a very Ralph Lauren vibe… Great way to revive the scarf…
carillo suzanne says
I loved your round up of your outfits this past year Tracey. I wrote a long comment and then I wasn’t able to login to post it on your blog. I hate it when that happens.
Happy you stopped by.

Very good idea Suzanne! i never thought about wearing the jacket by itself
Brilliant post again with Mélanie and Sue!

What a great idea with wearing a jean jacket as a top! Love that idea! Yours is perfect because it is so perfectly fitted to you and is the right length! The belt is a wonderful touch! Great finds at the thrift store! That Danier skirt is amazing!

You and I are big fans of Danier : )
Kristian says
I’d probably wear something underneath, but more for layering purposes in case it gets hotter/colder than anything else. However, I DEFINITELY agree with you that it is a fantastic and fantastically very Ralph Lauren!
Jan Graham-McMillen says
Oh, yes! What a great way to wear a denim jacket. Great for winter, clearly. What I think I like best about you upping the ante several notches is that a dressier take is completely fresh! They don’t appeal to me so much as I’ve worn them all my life in one iteration or another … western horsey-set stuff… and around here they are considered formal wear, if your Carhart jacket is in the laundry. This definitely has the Ralph Lauren feel … upper crust horsey set in mufti!
Happy New Year, Suzanne! May all your handbags be comfy ones!
Melanie says
I would pay money to watch you try and get on a horse in that skirt, Suzanne! And you DO sew after all.
I would have to wear a layer under the jacket – denim can be like sandpaper against my skin. Oooh, so baby soft. Yeah, right.
You look smashing in this outfit. There oughta be a law!
Sandra says
I love the denim jacket worn as a top, you look totally spiffy! (LOVE that word!) I had a denim jacket, beautifully aged and lent it to my daughter *goes misty eyed, it’s lost now* anyhoo!! you are damn gorgeous in this knockout outfit and I admire you for wearing lace lingerie under a trench coat, you are a legend – I have never tried it as I am very inclined to a ‘wardrobe malfunction’ and no-one deserves to see my sturdy bloomers x x x
Sylvia @ 40PlusStyle says
Very nice Suzanne. Like it a lot!
I have actually been wearing a leather jacket as a top today in Singapore and liked it a lot. I feel I need to put a bit more ‘badass’ into my style now that I’m the proud receiver of one of your cards (received by Anja) and feel that today’s look was inspired by you. (both the card and your personal style)
Happy new year! I hope it’s big enough for us to see eachother again. I so wish I had a glittering party to attend so I could wear your dress (the one you just purchased). Have a great evening!
carillo suzanne says
Ha! I’m delighted Anja sent you that card and that I inspired your style a bit. I think we both rubbed off on each other a bit.
I do hope we can manage to see each other again in 2015!
Have a wonderful New Year!

As soon as I saw the title of this post, I knew I needed to click it and I’m glad I did. I totally approve of this new way of wearing jackets. I’m getting so much inspiration from this! 😀 Your jacket really does look like a top on you, too. I think partly because it fits you like a glove. ;D Well done!

What a lovely combination. Beautiful skirt. Love the little belt on the jacket. For me the top combination with the small scarf is even better than the one with the big scarf (although made smaller and fabulous).
You do realize we cannot actually see the bag, don’t you??
Had to laugh over “If you get the other half as a birthday gift please act like you have no idea.” LOL
As for the trenchcoat thing… Ahum… With husband in car park… Years ago. I can cross that off my to do list haha.
Greetje
carillo suzanne says
I *knew* you would have a great trench coat story Greetje! ; P
Ha ha. Nope…I didn’t realize about the bag. Ah well…next time. That is the deal with cross body bags…they are hard to show.
No Fear of Fashion says
Aha… so I have a saucy, naughty image with you LOL…
elle says
Love the pics your chose for inspiration, especially the formal tulle dress with the denim. I love that high-low kind of contrast.
I love your idea and execution of the jacket as blouse and it looks great on you. I do agree, the whole outfit feels very Ralph Lauren, But the end of the post felt more Danielle Steele! Ha! You are something!
and yes, decades ago, I did something similar…. I think it was more along lace trimmed teddy+ boyfriend sweater, really, it was my boyfriends, and that is where I was traveling..
Happy New Year.
Sorry about the fibro- Ouch!

Ha! Danielle Steele… the precursor to 50 Shades : ) At least she had a better vocabulary. That biting the lip thing gets old pretty quick.

I really like this look. I have several jean jackets, and this would be a fun way to wear them. As for the overcoat and lingerie? My husband would be ecstatic at the suggestion! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment on my blog today – I really appreciate your input. Have a very Happy New Year!
Gnome Lover says
First, love the scarf cut like that! Brilliant and daring, just like you. Second, that skirt. Oh! It is divine! And I love how you styled it. I have to dig out my jean jacket. I haven’t even worn it yet this season! What is wrong with me?… Don’t answer that. ; )

Oh yes, that’s a great look, Suzanne; love the jacket as shirt and Danier skirt, you look super sexy and chic!

I love the second look very much: the romantic peach veiled dress with the jeans jacket.
