Fantasy Dress Part 2
My Super Power
What Is The Definition Of A Fantasy Dress?
For me a fantasy dress should be dramatic and make a memorable statement.
It should make me feel special.
Powerful.
The fantasy dress should have transformative abilities to unleash my inner female super hero, a woman who immediately commands any room she walks into. A female version of James Bond if you like.
That’s how I define a fantasy dress.
This one does just that.
Shame it is too small : (
The fact that this fantasy dress is 1980s-90s vintage makes it even more delicious.
Truly there is nothing quite as exquisite as draping yourself in either velvet or silk.
Slipping into a velvet fantasy dress is almost as sexy as slipping into some silk sheets.
*Almost*
Do I sound too much like Hugh Hefner from the 1970s? Ha ha!
I will admit that my first boyfriend had a waterbed and silk sheets. He was aiming to please.
(Yes, I am that old.)
The funny thing was that the silk sheets were so slippery you’d go to sleep and wind up at the bottom or wedged between the rubber bladder of the bed and the wooden frame like an old forgotten sock.
It was hell to pull yourself out of that trap bed.
Your bottom sinks when you get near the edge of the bed. Sometimes I needed a push just to get the momentum required to literally get my butt out of bed.
Often times I’d roll out of bed. That was the smart way to do it.
Waterbeds needed to come with instruction manuals.
Don’t even mention a waterbed after you’ve had one too many. I can remember sleeping with one leg out of the bed, foot planted firmly on the floor. This was not easy considering there is a wooden frame all around the bed. Basically half of my body slept on the frame. Talk about comfy.
No one mentions that when they talk about sexy silk sheets and rolling waves on a waterbed.
Maybe that’s why waterbeds went out of fashion.
Here are a couple other fantasy dresses I own that meet my definition of a fantasy dress.
What is your definition of a fantasy dress?
Have you ever slept on a waterbed or silk sheets? Do tell!
Theresa Campbell says
I’m with you there on the velvet for fantasy dressing. I also envision something liquidy, ( is that even a word?) like a draped, bias cut silk satin gown by Vionnet. You know, like the gowns Jean Harlow wore with no undies!
My ex husband had a waterbed when I met him which he insisted on keeping after we were married. I hated it for all the reasons you stated. And I had a cat that would claw holes in the thing. So we’d wake up in the middle of the night soaking wet. The patches never held. That’s when he realized the bed was not practical and got rid of it. One of the happiest days of my life when I didn’t have to wrestle with that thing anymore!
Sue @ A Colourful Canvas says
Oh my gosh, but that dress is gorgeous! Those little embroidered rosebuds!!!
G had a waterbed when we met, but it was the type that was encased in a mattress so it wasn’t quite as bad as the standard slosh buckets. I don’t think I could ever do silk sheets. I love my cotton sheets….and the older the better they feel to me.
suzanne carillo says
I also love cotton sheets. And flannel in the dead of winter : )
Lana says
I had totally forgotten about waterbeds. Despite their obvious flaws, they were awfully comfy! Ah, velvet. I have a velvet jacket, but I can imagine a dress feels glorious!
suzanne carillo says
I didn’t find the waterbed as comfy as everyone else. Also I suffer from motion sickness. That might have been why.

Those are 3 gorgeous dresses, the third one with sequins is stunning on your figure!
I had my fantasy dress, many years ago, and lost it. I bought it in a vintage shop, it was black crepe with a shawl neckline, and looked like it had been made to measure. Unfortunately my mum washed it and it shrank so I could never wear it again – but still looking for another one!
I’ve never slept in a waterbed or silk sheets, although I do use silk pillow cases to avoid that creased face effect which takes so long to wear off now! Gail x
suzanne carillo says
That is such a shame about washing the dress and having it shrink! It must have been a rayon crepe. Rayon can sometimes shrink up into nothing.
I should really get one of those pillowcases. My face needs all the help it can get.
Wendy says
I had a fanatsy dress similar to your black sequin one (which you look absolutely gorgeous in)….. mine was silver and I loved dressing up with it one new years eve.
I made a pinterest board for “dressing up”. I should rename it “fantasy …” this sounds so much more fun!
suzanne carillo says
Oooh…silver! I bet that was amazing!
I scored another similar vintage sequinned dress in black recently but this time from the 1980s. The shoulders are insane. It has the same great quality as this one shown here which is from the 1950s. They don’t make sequinned dresses like that anymore.

I have had a couple of fantasy dresses – one is a 1930’s bias cut satin, backless gown in cranberry satin with a fishtail hem (like the ones Jean Harlow wore), and I have photos of me wearing it, but I’m too big for the dress now. The other was a 1950’s, full-skirted black party dress with a pink lace overlay. I have photos, but the dress has since moved on to another owner. Happy memories of wearing both though.
The velvet dress is gorgeous, but I honestly prefer the tropical explosion and black sequins on you.
I briefly dated a guy who had a waterbed back in the 80’s – wasn’t a fan.

It’s a shame that dress doesn’t fit because you look like a bombshell! I had a friend growing up that had a waterbed (heck if I know why an 8 year old needs a water bed) and I was a bed wetter… we had some adventurous sleepovers! LOL

Wow. WOW!! These dresses are amazing — and you look fabulous in them. Glamour like this is my crack, even if it is only fantasy.
I’m old enough to remember waterbeds. The idea sounds so much better than the reality. They didn’t perfect the design enough for the reasons you note. Silk sheets also suffered the same problem. I found them uncomfortable.
Your posts are so interesting. I guess that’s ’cause they reflect you. 🙂

What a gorgeous dress, Suzanne! What a pity it is too small … I seriously need some more velvet in my wardrobe. xxx

Stunning dresses Suzanne! I love all three, the rosebud top is so romantic, and the tropical is so on point. A really good dress does transport you, it is true! You look divine! The lbd in black sequins , wow !

It has to be velvet… as I said in my recent blog, Velvet Rich https://fabulousageing.blogspot.com.au/2017/06/velvet-rich.html “Velvet transforms”. I do LOVE you looking amazing in that gorgeous short black sequin dress, just stunning. xx

My eyesight may be going bad since I’m so old, but which part of that fantasy dress is too small?????!! It looks utterly incredible on you!!
And don’t get me started on the water bed stories. They are the source of continual laughter for me….
XOXO

I totally had a waterbed… lolololol I’m from Atlanta so I always admired Hugh Hefner, as well. Maybe that explains it??? Loving the fantasy dress series!!!!!

I have a dear friend who is extremely petite. She had a boyfriend who had a waterbed and satin sheets, and if he jumped on the bed, she would go flying right on off. It was a game they played to see how far she’d travel. She told me that story when we were maybe 19 years old, and here I am almost 48 and it still makes me laugh.
Your fantasy dresses are amazing. I can see that I am lacking in that department. At least, that fit me….
Darlene Fadem says
Girl…you ALWAYS make me laugh! I was never a fan of waterbeds OR silk sheets.
I AM a fan of all those FAB dresses of yours, though!

I never slept in a waterbed but have slept in silk sheets! But the boyfriend who had them was awful and so were the sheets…..
I adore the middle dress! Absolute amazing. I think the dress I am now wearing on my blog is my fantasy dress.

Motion sickness turned me off to waterbeds the first time I briefly tried one out. Also, I always wondered about what kind of giant Petri dish was going on inside those beds…
This velvet dress with the bodice of tiny rosebuds is sweet and sexy all at once. I gasped when I saw you in the tropical print ; SO gorgeous!!! The lbd in black sequins is probably my fantasy dress. Fantasy just evokes sparkle in my mind! What a great post Suzanne!

I only met one bloke with a waterbed, an old boss of mine. A friend and I discovered it when he asked us to look after his house when he went away for a weekend. No wonder he was single. I can’t imagine any woman being impressed by something as naff!
You look fabulous in your fantasy dresses. Please don’t let them remain a fantasy, wear them to the supermarket like I do! xxx
Denise says
A fantasy dress, how amazing! I agree with you, something that is a statement piece, memorable. And the velvet one with flowers certainly is that, you look fantastic! I liked the bold colorful one, but the black velvet one is really sooo impressive! I had to smile reading about the bed and sleeping with half of the body kind of out of the bed (with a wooden frame 🙂 I never tried a water bed 🙂 The silk sheets, well, neither – but silk pillow case 🙂 Hope you have a beautiful week, bisous!

The only thing about waterbeds, which is something to cheer about, is there was no social media then. Can you imagine the blackmail photos? Hahaha! For that reason alone it’s possible they won’t come back into style.
Your dresses make you a Tower Of Power! Stunning. Yeah, I can’t picture my fantasy dress but I’ll know it when I see it. And I think the experience I have while I’m wearing a dress also adds or detracts from its superpowers. I sometimes keep wearing less-than-spectacular clothing because I’ve had excellent experiences when I wore them.
Señora Allnut says
so gorgeous dresses, I think that my favorite is the tropical print dress, it looks like the kind of dress that swooshes and moves when you walk, and that’s extremously fabulous!
My fantasy dress is a hippie-era dress, made of cotton, a really simple piece (with big sleeves!). I don’t wear it very frequently, but I think I have to do!. A girl can’t have too much fabulousness!

Never slept on a waterbed, never slept under silk sheets. I feel I led a boring life. But you did make me laugh with your adventures. Thanks.
As for the dresses, they are all gorgeous. I don’t have any fantasy dresses. Used to have fantasy wedding dresses waiting for the right moment (man). I wound up marrying Ron wearing a blue skirt suit. Bummer. It still bugs me.

I never slept in a waterbed and don’t think I will any time soon, hahaha… Hilarious description you gave from your experience.
Love all of your fantasy dresses!

I have never slept on a waterbed and after reading your post I think I might be grateful! Seems like they don’t just need to come with instruction manuals but there ought to be some Dramamine that comes with it too! Ha ha ha!!
As for wearing velvet or silk — THAT needs no convincing or medication.
Hugs,
Sherry
