Thrifting With Friends – The Good The Bad And The Ugly
Okay. I’m a mad thrifter. You all know that. I’m accustomed to thrifting on my own 99% of the time. It’s how I’ve built my business.
The Good
I do occasionally have the opportunity to thrift with friends and I relish the experience.
When I’m with a group of thrifters we each gravitate to our own areas of preference, for me that’s dresses, for Melanie, pants, for Patti tops seem to be one of her loves.
The great thing about thrifting with friends is they will often find pieces you miss. As I spend most of my time checking out the dresses, skirts and jackets my friends have already scoured the store for anything else of interest. That is how I came to be the owner of this authentic Kenzo sweater, regular retail price, a cool $840 US. I kid you not. Patti found it when we were thrifting together in BC.
I just had to sew on some missing beads and it was as good as new.
The temperatures finally cooled down enough recently for me to try this on with some other pieces I already own.
This was my face when Patti asked me if I’d be interested in it…

Okay, that is the good thing about thrifting with friends, are you ready for the bad? Can you guess what it is?
Thrifting With Friends – The Bad
The bad thing about thrifting with friends, especially if they are the same size as you and have the same taste as you, is they will score pieces you want.
Annoying!
Ha ha!
This also happened the last time we were thrifting in a group and Sherry managed to scoop up this fab embroidered bomber jacket that I desperately coveted. We had to pick numbers to see who would get it as Mel found it.
Needless to say, I think Sherry cheated.
Ha ha!
Joking!
It looks better on her anyhow.
And the ugly?
That only happens when you get into some serious thrift fighting moves as Mel and I demonstrated in our video below
These are real thrift fighting moves that I struggle with almost every time I shop. Now I keep an eagle eye on my cart.
Here are some more of my thrifting tips if you’re interested.
Do you ever secondhand shop with friends?
Do you experience what I described here?

Haha! I remember that Kenzo sweater, and I am so glad you wanted it; it was too sweet to be left on the racks! It looks amazing here with your leather skirt.
I like thrifting with friends and getting quick feedback, or getting pushed beyond my ordinaries.
Thanks for linking up, xox

Tis true that having some feedback can be good.
You always find great vintage pieces. You are true fashion and super modern here. Great outfit to transition into Fall. Love the skirt, sweater and French beret! Also, you did an incredible job shooting photos of Patti! =)
Welcome by Suzanne and join my new monthly Sunday Showcase! Thanks. =)

Thanks for popping by Ada : )
Love the Kenzo sweater with that yummy leather skirt. I usually thrift shop by myself as most of my friends don’t have the patience that I do when it comes to checking out ALL the racks.
It does require lots of patience that most people don’t have.
I can totally relate to this post, Suzanne! I used to go thrifting with my best friend on a regular basis and she often found thing for me I’d overlooked or hadn’t even considered, and vice versa. Thankfully, it never got ugly, even though we are about the same size … Unfortunately, she isn’t much into thrifting lately – she suddenly decided to go minimalist! – and I do miss our shopping trips … Love that Kenzo sweater, what a find! xxx
Oh my! That is quite a change up from thrifter to minimalist. I often wonder if I’d ever be able to do that. Shame that you no longer have a buddy to thrift with though.
I bet Sherry did cheat…LOL!!!
I absolutely love thrifting with friends, because there’s no way you can see everything. I’ve exchanged items many times with friends because it’ll look better on their frame or because of the color. Besides, it’s way more FUN!!!
So I have to know…what was the price of that marvelous sweater?? It’s so cool!!

You mean the price I paid? The original price was $840 US. I paid $7 Canadian I think. Yep…that is thrifting for you.
I agree it is much more fun to shop with friends. When I’m on my own it’s all business.
I love thrift shopping with you and the gang–even when it nearly comes to fisticuffs over an emerald green jacket! If you had tugged a little harder, I probably would have given it up. Hee hee. Maybe we need to create a custody arrangement for items like these?
Did I see that sweater? It’s probably for the best I did not. We might have had to have another trial by numbers situation. Ha ha ha! It’s very cool and how you’ve styled it actually tells me it was meant for you, even if I am happy jealous about it. 🙂
I’m looking forward to the next time we can thrift shop together again! It’s always a riot in so many ways.

my friends are not interested in 2.hand clothes – but i love to go with hubby because he´s tall and eagle eyed – and knows my size and taste better than me!
and – of cause – can´t and don´t want to wear what fits me ;-DDDD
fab look!! xxxx
Wow! I’m impressed your hubby knows your taste better than you do.
Jee, what a huge store! And what a funny video. I’m going to thrift in the UK next week! I am so looking forward to it, because last time I saw so many beautiful items but was still resistant to thrift shopping! Not anymore!
I hope you have a blast thrifting in the UK this time!
I love thrift shopping with you guys! We easily spend HOURS in the store, choosing, trying, filming, “fighting,” heh. It’s so funny that sometimes we find items that we ALL want when our tastes can be so divergent. I know Sherry had a psychic experience when she chose that winning number. I didn’t see that sweater, Patti, did I?! Hahaha. I love it when I find stuff for other people and vice versa. I’ve been in the receiving end of your great eye many times, Suzanne.
And I love the debriefing we plan afterwards over a lovely sit-down lupper – lunch-supper, where we spend another couple of hours. Really, it’s a great day. Can’t wait to do it again.
Usually, I go thrift shopping alone in the city, but haven’t much lately. I’m trying to shop my closet these days.
Yes…’tis true we always have a blast shopping together. Our videos are so much fun to make. Like you, I can’t wait till we get together again : )
Loved this post. Thoroughly enjoyed it. And the outfit? SMASHING. Love the sweater, what a find!! Kenzo is one of my favourite brands. Not that I can afford much. But they often have my name written on their stuff.
The skirt and boots are very good with the sweater. Nice styling Suzanne.

I had no idea Kenzo would be a brand that would appeal to you. I love that!
I really like this outfit too because it’s simple yet still me.
Is there any other way to spend time with our girlfriends (and, in my case, my boyfriends) than blitzing the chazzas and retiring for a liquid lunch?
There’s never any trouble when I’m out with my pals, I can spot stuff from 100 paces and always get in there first!
The outfit rocks! I had no idea that that eye logo was a Kenzo thing, a couple of the indie designers have adorned their gear with similar logo for a few years …I wonder who copied who? Either way that jumper is absolute magic and breathtakingly cool with the leather midi and signature Suzanne beret! xxx
Ha ha! It doesn’t surprise me that you can always manage to get to the choice pieces first.
Yes, it’s always a case of the “chicken and the egg” when we look at the latest designer fashions. I believe that much of what they do is “lifted” off of others. Copying is rampant everywhere.
Wow, now that is a nice score! Love the sweater, the whole lot! There are some treasures and I think having more than one set of eyes could be beneficial. I do all of my thrifting on-line, as I can’t stand for long periods and it would be exhausting. I have done more shopping lately on Poshmark, some on ThredUp and Real Real. Found some great buys. I try and share my excitement with my hubby, but he just kind of has a blank stare. 🙂
thanks for linking!

I’m happy and sad that those online sites don’t ship to Canada. They might be too tempting for me. Also shipping to Canada makes it too costly.
Ha! That is too funny about hubby’s blank stare. I feel your disappointment ; P
I’m envious of that Kenzo shirt; it’s awesome.
Nah, I mostly shop on my own.
Your video is hilarious, hahaha…
As I mentioned several times before: I wish we had comparable thrift possibilities as you seem to have in Canada and the USA. Both in quantity, quality and price wise. But we don’t. Also thrift stuff comes often in smaller sizes. Boohoo….
